Been biting on flylo's style recently and made tihs yesterday. I kinda like how drums turned out. Also I STILL have 0 idea what I'm doing when I'm mixing (yeah, "mixing") but I'm glad it doesn't sound like a poopie. Or does it?
The intro scared the shit out of me, not gonna lie. My mixing board is my current audio interface and it shuts down when all is quiet so this caused the click of power on and that initial scream. Overall, fairly good. The melody sorta wanders and sounds a bit silly, which is fine if you wanted that. The kick seems a bit weak in lows, and the snare/noise sound could be given a bit more punch. I think the hats sound almost too noisy and sustained, but thats more opinion at this point. Also, this could be all my opinion and I could be completely wrong :v: Did you play with effects any? Super light reverb on some of the drums can make a world of difference. Touch of delay too. Attack mag has a really good article on it.
Wanted to do another calm song, so now this.
This had a really neat intro, dig it. Did you phase the pads quite a bit or are they supposed to have that almost formant like sound? Its nice and makes me wish it came more to the forefront. The flow of the song felt nice, with all the instruments fitting into the rhythm and working together. Volume levels could be tweaked a bit. Maybe a touch of delay on that lead synth melody? Reverb on piano was nice. Harp could be given light delay as well. Pleasant listen overall, though. Finally finished that little melodic dub song I was working on. Not happy with how it came out, but really just wanted to finish it. I finalized most of it last Thursday but let it sit for a while so I could come back, relisten, and make any last second really big tweaks. I tried to make the song flow better, with less awkward transitions and with the intro being less long (by extending rest of bits and shortening intro a touch). Noise gated rainforest ambience, had a shitload of noise on it. Also tried to bring the wobble forward a bit. Also tried to make the piano a bit unsettling and emphasize the mid/highs. Don't think it worked. https://soundcloud.com/nofuchsgiven/pensive/s-Qi7zW I'm trying to make another song sorta in this genre, I forgot to listen to music for the past several weeks somehow so its no wonder my inspiration dried up. And school starts soon, so at that point I'm just going to try for one song a month and I'll be lucky to make that.
So I'm still fiddling around with my new toy, playing around in ableton. I recall that I also had some other software to play with and decided to get one of them, Xpand!2. Didn't think too much of it at the time until my computer asks me to install something called PACE Anti-Piracy. I'm already giving this thing the stinkeye by the name alone, so I say no. Then it decides to undo everything. I've never seen an install process actually go backwards before. Did some research and this thing is a bit of a bastard to have. Needless to say, I'm not using that program. Maybe the other one will have more success..

Maybe do some Eq on the bassdrums so it punches through more. If any of you guys are familiar with arai tasuku I did a remix of his track "henry and viora lost themselves" I also did a slowed down version if you dont like fast stuff. But I may completely be missing the point, don't mean to be negative, it's good. https://soundcloud.com/messier-51/well-then/s-BcPJR something i threw together just now in an hour or so

The panning crash transition works pretty well. The echoing kicks at the end sound a little awkward, though.
This had a really neat intro, dig it. It probably would've sounded pretty good if it became a bit more prominent, though. Sounds like something nice to listen to on a rainy night drive. I really like the theremin-like instrument.
I checked out the original song, and two things 1. You did a nice job with the remix; It still sounds familiar but it's different in its own ways. The drums/percs are spot on. 2. The music video for the original is really, really unsettling. Kind of reminds me of a faster combichrist song, though the only one of theirs I've heard is The Undertaker. It's probably because of the prominence of the bass & drums, though.
Hey guys, its been a really long time since I've posted in this thread. I typically consider myself a piano compositionist, but I've fallen in love with EDM and I've been toying around with writing some but I always get stuck starting. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions as to how I should go about it, e.g. software changes, etc? For reference, I'm currently recording with ProTools 8 and a keyboard that can act as a MIDI controller.

Start making drums, or try making a bass first, or getting the chord progression down, or a melody. You gotta find something that you can easily build on top of, something that works for your creative flow. [editline]23rd September 2015[/editline] I got three rough mixes of some songs me and two friends have been working on lately, will upload and post soon.
My first real solo release is finally out! :) Wrote this tune a year ago and it's pretty special to me because it's opened connections with a lot of artists I really look up to. This has been in mixes from Om Unit, Alix Perez, Sam Binga, Chimpo, Hyroglifics, Jon1st and more. It's kind of crazy that I've been writing music for as long as I have and it's taken me this long to get a legit release out, but I'm glad I waited. Previews are here: https://soundcloud.com/terabyte-records/sets/sonis-killah-sound-fresh-tb022 If you want to snag a copy it should be up on all the usual retailers (beatport, juno, itunes, etc). It's super weird seeing your music in shops for the first time. I very much encourage you guys to try to get a release together to put out though. It feels great!

I'm curious because despite only doing it for barely five months I still feel at times that getting to the point I want to get to (performing live for the fun of it) is unreachable. Just feels like there's so much other talent out there, and if they haven't gone anywhere than my chances are near zero as well. Congrats though, happy for you :D
On and off for around 8 years now. Had some pretty long breaks in there though. If it's something you enjoy doing don't think about it in terms of reaching specific goals though, just lose yourself in the process :) If playing out is your goal, the absolute best thing you can do is go to shows a lot and try to meet the people throwing them. We throw shows sometimes and the only people we've ever booked that we hadn't personally met already were our headliners. If playing out is your goal, it's very attainable! Playing your own music in front of people is one of the best feelings ever too. Do it!
Sorry for jumping in here, but the fucking harmonica you can hear in the background. WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT FROM? I'VE HEARD IT BEFORE AND I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE I GO INSANE!

I like to think I'm doing well for how long I've been doing this thing and lately I've gotten better at moving through the process vs. Stagnating. And as I mentioned a while ago, a close friend of mine used to host raves and is now producing his own stuff and wants to get back in to hosting music parties. He's playing a tech house set soon at a friend's place, and is getting reinvolved with the music scene here in Seattle (good place for this, imho). He already mentioned the possibility of me playing live someday, so I'm keeping that in sight. I can't say I dream of making it big, but rather making people feel my tunes would be THE BEST I've got school to keep me busy as well. I'm really hoping to go for my PhD in Aerospace Plasmas or Spacecraft Design, so that'll keep me busy too. Music and rocket science, I could have a fun life :D
Seattle has an awesome scene! I'm pretty good friends with some people who throw great shows up there regularly: https://www.facebook.com/TomKhaProductions and https://www.facebook.com/deepnbass Scope them out for sure! When you're feeling ready if your stuff fits their vibe I can put you in touch :)

I need to go to more local shows, but a lot of them fell on dates I worked. Only being 19 doesn't help either, won't be 21 until next November. Still, appreciate the offer. I'll be sure to hit you up when I feel ready. I haven't really found my favorite genre or defined my sound yet, I've narrowed my list of genres quite a bit but still so new it's hard to label much I make.

So I finished a track and I exported the .wav and whenever I try to upload it to soundcloud my computer refuses for some reason and then it just gets all unresponsive and I can barely get it to do anything else, and I have to restart it. That is, if I can even get the damn start menu to load. So that's a giant pain in the ass, fuck windows 10. Anyways, does anybody know how to make those huge sounding chord saws that you hear in a lot of EDM? Example: it comes in around 1:18

Touch of chorus helps, along with some delay. Stuff like this?
Getting stuck starting is very common. What gets you, more precisely?
Well currently what I'm trying to do is start with chord progressions, but I always feel mine sound too classical piano-y, as opposed to something that sounds EDM.
Well currently what I'm trying to do is start with chord progressions, but I always feel mine sound too classical piano-y, as opposed to something that sounds EDM.
Try to spin a little jazz or blues into it, get some minor 7 chords, stick to 3 or 4 chords for rounds at a time and be creative with the rhythm.

Here's a mixdown that was collecting dust in my harddrive that I recently decided to finally upload. It's a mashup of Gorillaz (Feel Good Inc.) and Skrillex (Kill Everybody). It sounds amazing together in my opinion, but the only thing that doesn't work together is the message of the songs. Earth forever hand in hand doesn't exactly sit right with I want to kill everybody in the world. I guess that's why I was so hesitant on uploading it for half a year. Anyways, here goes: Tell me what you think. This was done using FL Studio and the multitrack of Feel Good Inc. For this one, I chose to keep the Gorillaz in the original tempo/pitch. Skrillex's track had the honor of going from D m to Eb m and also received a bit of a time stretch. I thought that would be the proper way since FGI is the one that has naturally recorded tracks, whereas the Skrillex' is almost exclusively synthetic.
Does anyone have any experience creating progressive trance or psytrance? Also, where does everyone find their acapellas? Youtube only gets me so far and most other sites I've tried are either for well known songs or just shit quality altogether.

Check out my channel (button under my FP name). If I were to make a remix of a song, to get the accapella, I just go on the web and try to find the multitrack of the song. Usually you get the vocals quite isolated. The video I just threw up right above your post happens to be using just that: Feel Good Inc. Multitrack. For one of my mixes, I sang into a vocoder/autotuner - that's another way to get some trippy vocal tracks :P. Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMeoKn3wv0w [editline]25th September 2015[/editline] It's pretty minimalist at first, but just let it progress on ya

But other than that it seems to me that it's pretty well done, can't really complain about the mix. Sounds like something you could play in a disco Here's something I came up with after I spilled coffee I used Maximus's Clean Master to do it since I am way too inexperienced to do it myself

Maybe some more compression on it, and some stereoization definitely wouldn't hurt, cuz the hard mono is kinda jarring. I definitely dig the ambience, though. Would probably get stoned and listen to this. Those atmospehic noises at the intro and around 4:15 or so are pretty awesome, great job on that. Overall, a really nice ambient relaxing track. Not sure what it has to do with spilling coffee, though, hah. I made this track a couple months ago. It's supposed to be sort of a rap kind of drake style beat or whatever. I made it before I knew about encoding, so the bitrate is pretty low quality, but I still use this beat as my flagship beat if someone is ever interested in working with me on rap and they want to hear some of the stuff I've made.
