I have a ton of shitty recordings but these are the most usable (and i've used all of them myself except the explosions one)
Damn, those are perfect, thanks.
thanks, nicked the swans one and the lots-of-birds one
Keep me posted if you do anything with them :)
I like this idea, but a small remark I have is that it would be nice if it didn't turn into a "producing competition", because otherwise the traditional musicians would have a hard time participating. For example if a theme/genre is "dubstep remix of a chicken", that leaves very little room for the non-producers to participate, and I would like them in the competition too (I'll be honest, I say this partially because I consider myself not really a producer and I would like to enter the competition too :v:, but there's the orchestra/arrangement dude too ).
So somehow we should have some restriction to the genre/theme submissions so it doesn't depend too much on how you would compose/execute said submission, IMHO.
the whole idea of theme and genre isn't "dubstep remix of a chicken" it's "dubstep, chicken" so you can make a dubstep song that reminds you of a chicken or a dubstep song about a chicken, not necessarily using a chicken
hell, i write metal, so i can't really do dubstep at all, but if i got the genre of dubstep, then i'd simply make something that has characteristics that a dubstep has, such as the build-up/drop structure with wubbiness
it's not a competition, just like the collab albums never were competitions, it's just a fun little themed challenge that would help the artists here branch out a bit and try styles they would normally never try

The only problem with your idea here is that it creates a very vague and rather unfocused concept of a contest... like only "dark" sounding music or 12 tones compositions (examples). I think you're right in the sense that each challenge should not be genre-restricted, but a lot of challenges that would revolve around non-conventional music types would be out of the question.
My proposal is that we don't forget about genre-specific/non-producing artists within the Musician's Gig Room, like yourself. But instead of just leaving out a ton of challenge ideas due to a small crowd that cannot compete, I think we should talk over with everyone else to see who wants to do what to maximize user participation.
Yeah my point was just that the suggestion should not depend too much on the tools required. Similarly, a classical composer shouldn't suggest that someone write a 4-voice fugue or something that requires a choir, because that would also be very dependent on the tools needed to make it.
I don't even know if this would really be an issue, it just crossed my mind.
Yeah my point was just that the suggestion should not depend too much on the tools required. Similarly, a classical composer shouldn't suggest that someone write a 4-voice fugue with chicken sounds or a symphony because that would be equally difficult/hard to implement.

like i said, you don't have to make exactly what you get, just as long as you try to capture the feel and style
Ground my way through finishing this up yesterday after sitting on it for long enough that I stopped wanting to work on it.

(Don't feel obliged to give feedback since I'm not giving any and the track is finished already, but listen if you want to!)
Posted feedback a minute ago, I'm just gonna do this in a new post though, since there's a few others already.
Alright, here's another version of Long.

And some trashy, oldschool-ish hip hop.

Both are still WIP.
I really love the sounds in the backround in both, they're so interesting sounding. Look forward to the final versions.
Production has been slow for me, and all I've really been doing is playing around and making crappy "ambient" stuff.

(not sure if I posted before in the old thread)
I made this weird evil sounding bassey thing with a bunch of reverb and I thought it sounded cool:

Despite production being slow, I've been playing more guitar recently, so that's all good n fun.
I think the easiest thing to do is to limit it to general music theory stuff, such as what key it should go in, maybe a tempo, bpm or you're only allowed to use certain scales, stuff like that.
As an example, everybody should make a song in the key of A, keep it in minor and let it be 143 bpm.
That means everyone can do a track within those restrictions, the other stuff about scales n shit you can always look up easily on google. :)
but the whole point is to make artists go outside their comfort zones
limiting tempo or key or scales isn't going to make anyone do that, they'd just be the same kind of music those people would always make

Both of those are super cool! Try adding some low end on the first one or maybe combine the two!
Can i get feedback on the last track I posted?

I know I will go outside my comfort zone with this, and it'll boost activity and productivity.
I know I will go outside my comfort zone with this, and it'll boost activity and productivity.
I'm gonna agree with Hakita here. I doubt this will really change up the game at all.
You can make up restrictions that really force you out of your comfort zone, e.g. make an interesting melody with just a pentatonic scale over some chord scheme, but I don't think it'd be the kind of restriction you want for the collab/competition thing we're trying to set up here.
You're not going to be able to force people to do things outside of their comfort zone, that's not how it works :v:
You're not going to be able to force people to do things outside of their comfort zone, that's not how it works :v:
thats like asking me to not have strings or drums or piano or major or minor or not go above 100 bpm

Have you ever had an album of tracks all in the same key or tempo
it is way fuckin boring as shit
Set it along a theme, or give out like 3 samples and say that each track has to employ these samples in some way shape or form.
ok i'm going to explain what i had in mind as clearly as possible
Person A is a multi-genre artist and adds in the genre "Jazz" and the theme "Skeleton"
Person B is a metal artist and adds in the genre "Metal" and the theme "Waffle"
Person C is an electronic artist and adds in the genre "Dubstep" and the theme "Huge"
the genres and themes get randomised
Person A gets the genre "Dubstep" and the theme "Waffle".
Person A writes a dubstep song and uses the theme of waffle by making the song overall happy, upbeat and sweet, because that's what reminds him of waffles.
Person B gets the genre "Jazz" and the theme "Huge".
Person B only knows how to write Metal, so he makes a Metal song with Jazz-influences by using swinging drumbeats and saxophones and uses the theme of huge by giving the whole song a big, open, reverbarated sound.
Person C gets the genre "Metal" and the theme "Skeleton".
Person C only knows how to make electronic music, so he makes an electronic song with Metal-influences by using sawtooth synths that play low powerchords as the lead and fast paced drums and uses the theme of skeleton by making the main melody be played by a xylophone, because that reminds him of a skeleton.
if you guys just want to make a themed album, i'm all for that too, but this is what i originally had in mind

I was hoping for some low end in the first track! Would add a lot to that atmosphere you have going! Maybe you could add some low-end in there and side-chain it so its pulsating?
The second track would make a good intro for a set opener!
I've finished a track and started another today! Would love some feedback!

Everything sounds better through a DOD Death Metal. In order to be a srs japanoise fartist, you must run it on your master channel.

I'm not a big fan of dubstep anymore, nor do I know what good dubstep sounds like, but I'll admit, the drop was intense. Although, the song before the drop was quiet compared to the drop. Nonetheless, your glitch hop was neat as well.
I'm an electronic music person, as I have no other experience with making music with other genres. However, that didn't stop me from trying fake orchestra. (the music program that I only have did limit the way it would sound though.) This was initially for a game I was creating awhile ago, and I thought might as well do something with it.

i like this. it gives me a bit of a james bond vibe for some reason, were you making it for a spy game?
anyone arranging stuff for an orchestra should note that it's standard practise to avoid these. not that you should stick to that rule or anything i'm just saying you should be aware when you are doing it. i mean it's more of a stylistic choice than a rule these days but you should at least know what choice you are making.
aaaanyway here's a song i wrote. i was kind of going for a garage african vibe so i played the saxophone in myself rather than getting someone actually good at saxophone to do it.

I love how nobody ever bothers to look at tracks from the previous page. Just my luck...
I'm posting it here now and I did leave feedback on the last page.

At 0:24, the way you sing the beginning of the note, I'm not a huge fan of it. Also around 0:50 there's some intonation issues in the vocals. The sax around 1:05 seems also a tad high, maybe pull out the mouthpiece a little (or bite less). At 1:57 the trill should be more in time, it wanders too much and it kinda kills the groove.
Apart from that it's very nice, nice ideas, uplifting melody, neat drums. What would also be nice is a guitar solo with this kinda sound:

Don't know how you'd achieve it, lots of treble and a chorus filter?

The fade in around 0:27 is a cool effect but I think it should be more emphasized, maybe make it longer and more profound? Also maybe it's genre specific (it's not really the kind of music I actively listen to so this is kinda an outsider's opinion) but I feel there are a bit too many voice samples in there, maybe tone those down and have more of a bass line? Again I don't know exactly what you're going for because I'm not very familiar with the genre but it's what I had in mind when I listened to it. On the other hand it really helps the chaotic atmosphere of the song...
Also sick drums, it's a mystery to me how you achieve such a rhythm.

I have no clue how I do it either to be honest lmao thx for the tips.
Anyone ever been in a mindset and written a song, then moved on and not been able to go back to it?
Nevermind.
