First things first, I think it would sound better with a softer, wider bass. As far as the rest of the instruments go, I'm a fan. I think the various synths you use compliment each other well, in particular that main guitar and the popcorny synth in the background. I liked the melody between about 1:00 and 1:20, but didn't really care for the melodies elsewhere, seemed kind of boring or uncatchy. Percussion elements seemed to work well to me, although I think I would have loved to see you cut to a half-time hip hoppy beat somewhere around the 3:10 mark.
Here's something I've been working on:

You can find second hand instruments below €50 that will give you a slight taste, i.e guitars, recorders (do not underestimate it), melodica's, MIDI keyboards, ...
They'll be crap quality (except for recorders, they're dirt cheap, but they're also quite difficult to have good intonation and range) and progress will be slow but you know you might stick with it and get a better instrument later on.

Very helpful, actually. The beat is the base.
But I feel stupid that I do not get what you mean with Kazoo. Google search only shows me the weird looking instrument. I asked for computer software I could use, so I am a bit confused.
I was talking about the instrument.
The new ableton push wants are so strong right now.
The new ableton push wants are so strong right now.
I'm kinda thinking about buying a push 1 b/c they seem to be falling in price now. Would buy a Push 2 but i don't really want to drop $800 on a piece of hardware right now.
The new ableton push wants are so strong right now.
Oh god I know. It seems awesome, and fixes my major gripes with the Push 1. Better pad control is one of hte bigger things, and it just seems like a fun thing to toss in my backpack so I can play little things out or take creativity breaks in the library. Ableton 9.5 seems great but I haven't updated yet since I've been working on a track (which uses gratuitous amounts of filter sweeps and would be kickass with the new filters).
I'll probably honestly save for that instead of a new synth- I have enough sound design power as is and my new midi kb + jd-xi have both been great. But the KB simply makes me able to be more expressive, and the jd-xi just deepens the sonic palette and the ease of improv but isn't the easiest to use with my DAW (or export parts from). The Push 2 does both very well and I neeeeed it.
In terms of buying a Push 1, I can see why you'd do that but the Push 2 is an instrument and is such a significant investment, with a learning curve and acclimation time. If you just want to noodle around, push 1 yeah or consider a novation circuit or launchpad pro. But if you want to really learn an instrument in-depth than save for the Push 2.

This sounds awesome. I think the kick drum could be wider - maybe with a light chorus or something. It sounds a bit mono. I think that some stuff could take place in the higher frequencies.

I wish you'd pump up the bass! It could be louder, as well as the drums. The background pad/arpeggio could be pushed further into the background with more reverb and lower volume to help bring out the most important tracks. Also, the snare could use some brightness.
Outside of that, this is a really cute track and I love it, man. If you want, you can send me the multi-tracks and give you an alternate mix and show you how I got where I did with it. (not that I'm a master of mixing or anything, but I think it's what would help your track out a lot.)
For my tracks, I'm not looking for a whole lot of crazy criticism (skip it if you want) - it's just stuff I've been working on.

The bass could be modified a bit- either giving it some resonance and filter sweeping it up and around a bit every now and then (or just giving the bass a low speed low depth lfo on an LPF). That and I do agree, maybe bring it wider by using something like a frequency shifter and panning two copies shifted lightly to either channel? Its soft enough to work but could use just a bit more I think, just clearly not too much as its not meant to be the highlight of the track (I think). The drums and percussion are well done and flow nicely, but they feel a bit dry as well. Sound choice and programming here is on point though. As previously mentioned, excellent mix of synth sounds as well. I like this one a lot!

Heh, reminds me of the stuff that inspired my latest track. Which is lovely. I would definitely bring the bass up, and check your levels after the drop- everything seemingly gets quieter. While dynamic range is great, its plenty acceptable to compress bass quite a bit and sacrifice the dynamic range so that you can sidechain it and get the nice consistent pumping bass vibe. Maybe even bring it way up and sidechain it to the chord's rhythm? I think that would sound SUPER cool here. The lead synth that sounds sorta brassy is a bit vanilla-y sounding. Give it some effects or something and I think it'd sound ace as hell. The chord sound is awesome and the rhythm of those is great. The drums seem a bit pushed back though. How did you EQ this? It almost sounds like everything is overcompressed and muffled in a bus comp. As far as I can hear most of the instruments should fit together at equal volume levels once EQ'd, nothing that seems like it'd force insane eq work. But idk. Just throwing shit out there. The ride sound is a bit high imo as well.

holy shit i love your original so much. The organ is excellent and thunders and roars wonderously. The kick/explode sounding thing is well placed and works really well too. Have you thought about simulating the crescendo pedal? I also bet some sine-shaped distortion to warm up the mids and crackle the lowers a touch on that organ would be excellent. Also maybe give that choir+string some light phasing? Its quite lovely. The string sounds are warm, rich, and textured. Samples? Kontakt? what is your sorcery?
I'm really proud of this track. I love it and put a lot of love or something into it. The first song I've wanted to listen to that I've produced, and adding that filter sweep to the chords gave me chills because it worked so well there haha. lots of filter sweeps and sidechain compression- its like I did Liquid DnB french house haha. It uses the chords and melody from 3LAU's 'How you love me' because I love the acoustic piano version. I spent a lot of time trying to play more with automation of effects and doing more in terms of that sort of thing, and tried to use a number of more subtle effects working together instead of making everything washed in reverb and dunked in saturation to hell and back. I used my JD-Xi for the lead chords, the harp, and the strings. They all turned out quite lovely I think. My little custom dub delay rack is becoming hard to not use... it can generate some really great textures and adds lovely background noise to almost all of my most recent tracks. Here, you can hear it in the synth sweep near the end and most of hte times I filter sweep the drums. It makes a really neat churring/skipping effect in the transition to the doubletime outro that I'm really a fan of, that was a happy little accident. So uh yeah here it is:

Man, I suck so bad with EQ and compression. Do you know any tutorials on the subject? I wanted to turn up the bass and the kick, but when I tested in my car, it made the song sound super staticy. I'm not sure what causes that, doesn't happen with any other songs (other than my own).

clipping causes that, or bad audio components. Most stock audio systems stop at 60hz. Lots of resources are available. You can send me a multitrack as well, which means uncompressed 24bit 96khz .wav (.wav is important here) exports of your stuff and I'll do a quick mix and master run on it as well. Leave the instruments as raw as possible, only the effects you added to them. I'd like to do it for the experience in mixing :)

SeamlessR makes a good series of videos too. They're all worth a watch. Take notes, too. Then try to apply a bit of what you learn in each video to that song you made- you have quite a bit of compositional ability there and the harmony is quite sound.

haha.
"Yeah, so expect some finished works soon."
'soon.'
I'm pretty terrible.
Perhaps I have extended one specific piece by quite a bit, but I feel like there's still so much more to add. Perhaps it's because I feel like quite bit of it is emotionless, and I want to tear it to shreds and redo a large portion of that extension.
Well, I've already started on another project though, this one a piano/cello duet with me switching to viola near the end.
Here's a link to the pdf if anybody can read music (yes, quite a bit of the cello part is in tenor clef, and viola is in alto clef so...): https://www.dropbox.com/s/j4t4dq7oqk32gjz/27.1%20-%20Full%20Score.pdf?dl=0

I personally think it sounds way too messy, I like the breaks that begin around 1:04 and 2:09 and would like more of that low base + high pitch synths, leaves room for the mids to breathe cause atm I feel like there is way too much going on in the lead at the same time that doesn't entirely go all that well together.
It's a very creative mix though, but maybe it would help if you played around with effects like reverb and chorus and lowering the volumes of stuff to get more in the background.

I like it a lot, the only thing I'm not a big fan of are the drums I feel like the samples/sounds should be much punchier than they are now - the drum composition itself is really good.

Composition wise this is really goood I think you might wanna eq cut the synths on the low end so that the drums will pop in better. Like figure out where the frequency is that the drums "live" then take that frequency and reduce it on the main the synth.Other than that its really fucking rad bravo!

I actually really dig this. It sounds a lot like something I would hear in an arcade racing game. The only gripe I have with it, and this is completely a personal preference thing, is that it sounds like there is just too much "stuff" going on. I think it might benefit if you somehow found a way to make it sound a little smoother. Once again, its all my personal preference.

The problem I have with it is that it doesn't switch up a lot - it's overall very repetitive with the chords and filtering. This is something that I've got problems with in this entire genre though, so I've got that negative bias going on. It's kind of the same thing throughout the entire song, just with a lot of automation going on and I can't find that particularly interesting. I like having layers moving in and out with their own character with a song structure that is devious with chord progressions and what not.
Technically, everything else seemed fine - maybe the drums could be a bit more hard-hitting, but that's not a criticism that I'd stand firmly behind. If I were personally mixing this, I would have made the bass the forefront and make the main saw a thicker but quieter compliment. I guess that might just be the main problem I have it - I don't really think the saw made use of the limelight very well.

Nah you're entirely right, I'm not very good with drum composition and mixing, so I always start out with really simple drums and then work on them in the end. Thanks though!
[editline]5th November 2015[/editline]
The name is just random project name cause I was working on learning drum compression earlier
I have a hard time with drums and get really perfectionist with them until they sound fine. It takes me about thirty minutes to an hour to get some solid drums down and I'll endlessly mix them until the song is finished. The one thing remains true though: I layer the shit out of drums.
I never really do drums to a specific genre either - this is a combination of 80s drum machines., an actual rock snare, a Dubstep-centered snare. Yeah to both of them, look up tutorials or demos of both to see which one you'd prefer over the other.
What differences do DAWs have over each other other? Most of them probably include very similar, if not identical components as far as I can tell, but any glaring differences? I imagine pricier DAWs have more settings to fiddle with, while cheaper products try to go for user friendlier UIs more than for settings to customize.

I imagine pricier DAWs have more settings to fiddle with, while cheaper products try to go for user friendlier UIs more than for settings to customize.
I haven't really used a lot of DAWs, just mostly FL and some Cubase and out of each I prefer FL in some ways cause the interface is imo very coherent and the way plugins work as instruments and mixing fxs is fine, but maybe there are some deeper aspects to the DAWs that differ enough to choose one over the other, at first it's mostly about learning the interface and stuff though.
It's kinda like choosing between NVidia and AMD, I guess.

I used to have ATI then I upgraded and went with Nvidia and then I upgraded again and now I have an ADM card and what can I say... each one was better than the one before but that may have had something to do with the fact that I bought them after years since the one before :v:
amd and nvidia is an unfair analogy since amd is the budget brand
when picking a daw, the main thing you should be concerned with is workflow
if you like it and can use it well (after trying it for a bit), then use it
anything you can do in one daw can be done in another
