bullshit though, some of the coolest stuff comes from just opening a DAW and fucking around. Nothing wrong with that
these guys can't get it in their head that some people take creative liberties with their mix and mix bad on purpose for aesthetic purposes

Whatever, maybe I was harsh, but I take music really seriously. Don't let my sub par soundcloud post fool you. I have a deep autistic romance with the art. Being insinuated as illegitimate burns my ass HARD
wtf pdp

Sorry. I was a dick in the intro to my posts.
Otherwise, I was honestly trying to help. If I offended you for disrespecting your process, I apologize- my statement of making music just because lol" = invalid is unfair. I tried to point out those points because you did seem to sorta act like you didn't know what you were doing and wanted help. Its what I like to do, not out of self assured superiority because frankly I'm still shite but mostly because getting to the point of being able to teach something helps your own learning.
But srs calling me a nerd lord and genius and all that other shit hurts man
I have standards
Trying to start a flamewar? Jesus tittyfucking christ. I was honestly trying to help out because I thought you cared. I've never been a dick for the sake of being a dick in this thread, or any other thread for that matter. You yourself wrote on my visitor page a few weeks ago that "i can tell you're a compassionate person". I'm sensitive about being called a fucking nerd lord because this is the only place I can nerd out without anyone just telling me to shut the fuck up because "no one cares paindoc". Maybe work on being less sensitive and seeing everything as a completely personal attack or attempt to strip you down.
I apologize if I insulted you but you did the same sort of thing in FULS, making generalized statements after admitting you have no idea what you're doing (in hindsight, sarcastically), and when someone tried to help you got angry at them. And then went around and posted on visitor pages a number of various things.
I'll fuck off, then. I apologize if I insulted your process or misinterpreted your intentions. But like fuck that was shitposting.
Our beliefs can co-exist. The truth is we both have psych issues based on our public post history.
Let me tell you this. I mean no emotional harm. I am just expressing my frustration at a failure to mesh with a thread's community once again because my opinions are so outlandishly retarded I should kill myself.
I am sorry. I give the wrong impression to people, that I am challenging them, but I mean no harm. I am just awkward. My words can be misinterpreted over text.
you're opinions aren't retarded they're just expressed poorly. majority of people here are EDM producers so...ye
chill out and you'll do fine and lets all stop now

I don't think I'm special. I'm just saying I take music seriously. I am not a poser. I didn't mean to sound pretentious about it, I just wanted to prove that I feel passionate about the craft, instead of some trend hopper. I am a musician for life -- giving the opposite impression is antithetical to my entire existence. Of course I will protest a misunderstanding.

I know, I am sorry. I will return once I have something truly representing my passion for music. No half rate shit. It will take time, but until then, I will leave the thread since I am the newcomer.

Well then why say that :v:
Don't completely devalue your creativity. If its a creative choice, cool. In order to get all my sperg out completely (clearly haven't done it lately) I also try to give tons of feedback in the weekly /r/edmproduction feedback thread and the amount of stuff involving people just smashing everything together is really really high. So I'm used to that rote response as a reflex, but added in my little snide remarks because outside shit and what I interpreted as you being an actual troll or someone just out to antagonize. If you have shit you made for the passion then just post it with crit next time and don't immediately fall onto your own sword, it doesn't help you and it doesn't help anyone else reading your post.
should have just studied for tests to be fucking honest. I just like to think I'm helping :quotes:

All good sources. Izotope mixing guide is my go-to recommendation. SeamlessR does a lot of good stuff, along with Xenflex and Tom Cosm (latter two best for ableton, former FL). No need to go crazy with it- try applying one technique or fucking around with various plugins. Most stuck plugins are plenty sufficient, but SPAN is really nice as a graphic frequency spectrum tool and I still use it for finding the key to tune my drums too. Razer Music series is also surprisingly good, Spor/Feed Me has a bunch of tutorials and Varien (<3 varien) has some good ones too. Varien also has a YT channel. Did I mention Varien yet? No he's not my celebrity crush thats dumb.
Its really just sampling a bunch of techniques and deciding which to use. Its not a matter of being smart at all- everyone tells me "oh of course you're an engineer and make music you're just soooo smart". Like fuck, I worked to get where I am. Putting in the effort to even learn a DAW or make anything is far more than most people do already. If you want to learn technical audio engineering shit from the sources above, your choice, but i assure you it is plenty achievable. Read any links that come up that interest you in the subs above, or check their sidebars for FAQs+even more resource packs.
"smart" is such a fucking stupid term anyways, either used to overinflate or demean and both are poor uses of it. you've already put in a fair bit of work. thats what counts. not how smart you are.
Don't worry about shitting up the thread. Just learn from this experience. No reason to leave the thread. If anyone learns a smidgen from what I posted earlier, it was worth the effort. Just don't let this ruin another thread for you.

don't think there's any need for anyone to be leaving
just post things, listen to what people say about it, think about what they say you might have to improve on and then make a new thing that tries to improve on it, then repeat
you don't become good without being bad at first, you just gotta gradually improve

got another batch done so time to listen to some of you folks' songs

very clean, professional, as expected
loving the kicks, i always love me some good bass
otherwise it's super chill, but the synth chords feel way out of place to me
they sound like they're more fit for a metal song than a chill dubby song, quite sinister and a lot of weight on them, especially the ones at 0.48
other than that top-notch, not something i'd listen to personally but it's chill

i love the intro, i expect one of those "emotional" soft layered vocalists to start any second with that
the initial hit with the meat of the song is good, unexpected but good, but i really don't like the tooty synth that comes in with
the whole thing has this emotional build-up and then a big payoff but then the synth sounds like a heavily reverbarated fart or MIDI trumpet, completely breaks the mood for me
you've got good stuff here, you just need to weed out parts that dont quite hit, make it build up a bit faster after the initial hit to keep the momentum and make the song a bit longer, and then you've got a good song in your hands

not really feeling this one, don't see why it has to be so loud and i don't like how the different layers are fighting with eachother to try and be audible over the distorted main synth
the melodies are good and the drumbeat is pretty nice as well, but the main drone is so loud it just drowns everything else out
loud noise and distortion is used for intensity, but because the melodies, chords and the backing are all very calm and relaxed, there's no intensity to amplify here, so the loudness is just very out of place
i also don't really like the slidey synth, it sounds a bit janky IMO, but your chords and melodies are all good, so you do have something going on here, you just have to figure out where you want to go with it and what you want to do with it

you definitely have some good stuff here, i like how many layers it has, adds nice subtleties
the melodies are fine too, and i really love the way the glitchy noise works, great flow and rhythmic feel
the problem i have with this track though is its production, nothing just quite sounds right to me, and it feels like the song is missing it's low ends
the glitches are artifacted weirdly and just unpleasant for the ears, and not in the good kinda way, and the drums feel a bit weak for how intense the glitchy noise gets, especially the snare
can't really tell you any details cause i suck at production and mixing, but if you fix that stuff, it's a very, very nice song

love the thick sound the bass has, i dont personally like the way the synths sound but that's probably just personal preference
the drums and bass are what really carry the song in my opinion, though i wish the piano was more audible, it's really quiet, especially compared to the synths
this is really abrasive when you have the piano playing with the right-panned synth playing a couple notes every now and then, they are too loud and sharp compared to the piano, so it just pierces my ear
i feel it might be too repetitive, though i'm not someone who listens to that kind of music so it might just be a part of the genre
love the bass and drum, chord progression is simple but fine, could use a little less repetition and a bit more work on the volumes

okay, so time to post my new stuff again in the vague hopes that someone will maybe listen to them possibly
less droney this time around so it might be a bit easier for you guys since i know most of you aren't into that kind of stuff
016: The Black Hole (in Five Movements) (dark ambient with some drone metal and post-rock going on)
017: For the Morning Sun (classical drone with 2 piano improv tracks)
018: The Atomic Age (minimalist classical played by cheesy synths)
019: Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust (noise rock concept album with industrial rock, post-rock, drone and even a little bit of harsh noise)
020: Shout of the Earth (post-rock stuff, heavy repetition and slow build-up, last track has some blues rock vibes, kinda Earth inspired)
i know you guys don't listen to drone here, so i'd recommend at least giving 018 or 019 a shot, i'm really happy with how both of them came out

yeah i definitely understand that, i just like full albums more than single songs
tbh i'd recommend just considering them normal albums, just like show each one into your playlist of whatever you listen to

concepts are best explored through albums imo
i just wish i had more of an attention span to give them the attention they deserve
Shit, now I want to learn about frequency dynamics.
Omnisphere is soo good.
Hmm I never listend to glitch hop much, so I don't really know how to judge it, I find glitch effects irrating myself personally. It sounds alright I guess, but a little monotone.
I can make some crits notes about the snare drum tho. I loove the sample, but I think it was butchered somehow in the mixing, maybe overcompressed or buried? I don't really know how to describe it. It sound plastic, the punch sounds "fake". Like if there was limiter or something. I haven't produced in this style much, but yeah - I think sample is great, but needs better adjustment in the mix.
Sounds really nostalgic, neat throwback to the 90s. I remebmer being fascinated by this kind of music. Can't really think of any crits. Oh and happy 20th!
---
So ugghh, I'm stuck with this compostional block, so here's another beat with melodies that go nowhere. My mixing gets better tho I guess.
One thing I realized is that I should learn to use pads more, for some reason I can't make them sound right in my tracks, so usually I don't bother and use leads as pads.
Hah this is pretty cool, wasn't expecting that percussion to come in and it was a pleasant surprise. The melody is nice too, especially the bit that comes in around 1.16. I don't really have any criticism!
Pop punk cover of Lean on, pretty rough at the moment and not finished but hey.

most of the redherring. stuff works well as background music, it's what i often use them for
i'll make a 15-minute EP next batch just for you though
I personally enjoy the tape stop and the bell sound sounds fine. But as I'm going to mention below if you need cheesy 90s/80s bell rompler samples I can hook you up.
YESSS I just lost all my samples in a hard drive crash and am definitely looking for more samples!
I'm also looking for more 90s/80s vocal tracks/acoustics to sample from. Most of what I find just gives me a download link to a youtube video which isn't high quality most of the time.
edit: woops

You rolled too much into that quote :D
I'll have a look on my machine then. The JV-1080 is king of 90's cheese. I'm getting an audio interface with my birthday cash sometime over thanksgiving break from the 25th-29th. I can record before then, but the quality is meh. Otherwise I'll get some stuff to you after I get my new shiny interface.
This site has the JV-2080 but not 1080, and a ton of easy to preview demos. Preset banks A,B,C are the same as my machine. The Cathedral, Velocity Techno 1, and LttrFromPat patches are what i had posted earlier I think
http://www.synthmania.com/jv-2080.htm
This is the board I have in there atm, mostly orchestral but maybe something you'd like http://www.synthmania.com/sr-jv80-02.htm
offer stands for everyone else too. I'll probably write a little ableton max4live script/device to record a bunch of samples running up and down the scales for a bunch of presets. I'm also tempted to pick up the JV-09 expansion card but for $100 I might just get a vst or sample pack of piano/convetional instruments instead.
[editline]22nd November 2015[/editline]
also I should point out that synthmania is excellent for looking for sound demos fcrom synths, not a lot of new modern items but he does a good job of running through a range of sounds. Little comments too, usually. The YT is also great for checking out neat analog demos of old synths too.
http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20JV-2080/Audio/PR-A/066%20Saw%20Mass.mp3 christ its so cheesy it almost hurts
[editline]22nd November 2015[/editline]
essentially let me know if you want anything in particular otherwise I'm just going to sample the best, most useful, and cheesiest patches
Anyone have any tips for making glitch music? Illformed Glitch2 is great, but I feel like it's lacking in a couple of features.
