I don't see why it would be so hard from a programming standpoint to automatically remap your MIDI controller's knobs based on whatever window you have open, save and share those presets on the net, and then create an API that allows plugin developers to have defaults.
Definitely not saying it's not possible, but right now none of the solutions attempting that are really on equal footing with a dedicated control surface. Most stuff that does decent automapping just gives you 8 knobs and a page back/forward buttons which isn't even close to ideal.

I'm hanging out and making shit with Eprom tomorrow :O
We're going to experiment with doing some interactive visual music stuff in VR. So hyped!

I convinced Robotboy to do it (for this very reason), but we only had it for a few days until people started complaining their browsers didn't support it :|
Anyways, I really like the jam in the beginning, and how it builds up! I especially love the syncopated kick and bass, that's really great. That synth really has a chiptune feel, which I really appreciate when done well. The intro transitions really smoothly into the solo, and the solo transitions really well into the change to the next synth effect. I would actually turn the bass up just a little, to give it a little more presence, since it fits everything so well. I REALLY love your use of distortion to 'fade' in each section of the song in an organic way, it makes the song sound quite unique. The whole thing really holds together and is really cohesive while maintaining a unique sound throughout each part. I really enjoyed this!
---
So, I'm still going about learning Ableton (I really should read that manual after struggling to arrange something...), but I've got a good skeleton for... something.
https://clyp.it/rdfnpzik
I know it's not much, but I'm kind of proud of it. I just need help with a few things:
How can I make the intro sound less 'empty'? As it stands, it sounds pretty "hey, I just made this with a stock bass sample in 30 seconds" even though I really did put a lot of thought into how it sounds and tweaked it a lot.
Also, I really have no idea where to go with this. It seems most of the things I make like this are just jams, but go nowhere. Do you guys have any tips for song structure?

(I have a lot of fun making beats because of my drumming background so that's something I do know how to do :v:)
When you're making "dark" music, obviously you're gonna put emphasis on the lower end of the spectrum, which you've done brilliantly. Still, you will need some sort of background element to fill out the top end too to make the track sound "fuller". Some strings or something would do the trick.
Interesting rhythm, but you're gonna need more than just a kick and a snare :downs:
(I know it's WIP and you're probably already working on it/planning it if you haven't abandoned this project already)
Really good work on the bass synth. Turn it down a little bit though.
The piano-like sound could do with some dynamics.

This was really fun to listen to. Maybe bring out the pads more are have something in the lower mids with more legato? Those bells on the left towards the end were really good, you should do more of that. Maybe sample something old? Or just add some vinyl noise in.

The whole idea is to only use FM sounds since I'm kinda in the process of learning FM synthesis. So no samples.
Ughhhh I am not able to make music lately. I just get stalled and feel uncreative every time I open my DAW. of course I really wanted to make music and had tons of motivation and ideas during dead week and finals week but now that km free? Nothing.
I'm out of medication too, which is probably the majority of it. No motivation to get anything done. I've been trying to make a liquid funk track for a week now and I've gotten nowhere. It's not like I'm stuck looking for perfection or trying to find something better, I just feel completely blank.
I'm writing another article for BassGorilla on Simpler and Sampler and how to use them since 9.5 changed the interface, and that's been somewhat inspiring and I've thought of making a song using only simpler and one sample pack I have (liquid funk pack) but that makes me feel all dirty like I'm cheating.
I'll share my article though since I have no shame left. It got spaced weirdly and my links are broken - Xenflexs secretary posted it before he left for the holiday but he said he'll fix it soon or get my employee account going so that I can fix it. No biggie though.

Now feel free to tell me how awful it is [sp] or how I can write gooder in the future [/sp]

experiment with different composition techniques. get out of your own routine. Last week I had this very problem, and what I did was to select 6 samples randomly, and try to build a melodic track around it, without synths. Only modification of the original sample was allowed; this kind of self imposed challenges can sometimes unlock your creativity.

The flow is very good, but it feels like there's just a constant low that feels like you're waiting for something louder and more energetic to come in. Build it up a bit more, it sounds kinda chill and relaxed which is great but I feel like it would contrast well if it flowed into something with a bit more of a prominent hook.
finished this one today

this is a short snippet in the wip mix of a section in a song im covering on guitar. It's really short, so you might have to replay it to grasp it better. I picked this section of the mix because of how tricky it is to accentuate the E minor run in the mix when it goes so low to the point where only mammals with infrasonic hearing can make it out. I managed to make it sound more clear than the original band's mix. if you listen closely, there's a synth playing the exact same run, highlighting the 5th below rather than the minor 3rd which my guitar is doing. I dont know if i should scrap the keys or turn up the guitar to eliminate the mud

I dunno if you ask me I'd try to mess around with the guitar's tone, I mean there's a lot of pedals that do it right?
If you can add some higher frequencies to the mix it'll definitely stand out better. But I suppose it's personal choice if you want to stay with that sound, in which case maybe just turn the volume up?
Does anybody else have the issue where they can't find any sounds that fit with the atmosphere of the track no matter what they try?

i suppose. i can always demo two mixes of me playing the ending run an octave higher and the original one here. i have a gnarly range of effects, but i usually have one distortion sound i use for genres like this and change the tone with my pickups. switching pickups actually make a pretty big difference tonewise

I like it, it sounds like something straight out of Killing Floor, which I can approve of. You could try making it sounds a little less muffled as I found it quite deep on my headphones, but that could be due to the headphones I use (which are not producer grade)

I'm working on my first collection of tunes which I hope to ship as an album. The idea of this album was to be very experimental and a chance for me to experiment with sounds. I'm not going for any current trends and to kind of put it into a genre for you, It would best fit in Ambient, Chill and maybe PsycTrance (?).
I did really want to record vocals over the song, but I don't have access to any vocalists and I can't really vocalize anything good on my set up, such is life.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/H4cteEl.png[/t]
It didn't take me long to create to prototype this song at all, hopefully I can finish it up.
I want the sounds to very open and feel large scale, the muse for this project is an arctic tundra. Please let me know what you think, any tips are much appreciated.

when i get that problem, i either listen to other stuff for inspiration, hum or make weird noises that fit with my mouth and try to match a synth to that, or just play with patches

Sucks that once you find a good sound that you can make with your mouth it's very difficult to get it into whatever song you're working on.

Not bad. Has a good feel to it and the melody in the middle is nice. My biggest complaint is its very repetitive. I'd like to have seen more variety whether that was in the rhythm or a new melody.

I took your advice and rewrote the song, I feel like this version is far superior to my last attempt and it really catches the mood I was going for, but I'll let you decide.

I want to work on the intro a little, as I feel it jumps into the song a little to quickly. How much I've changed to the original song, I could in all fairness just make my last attempt its own song.

That version is much better, but one of the chords that you're using in your progression sounds really off. Its the very first chord in the progression. Either you need to try reworking the chord, like spacing at the notes, or you need entirely new notes (aka a new chord) as like I said it doesn't work with the rest of your progression.
Thank you. I'm using the gold version of this. Its currently on sale, which is quite a deal. http://www.soundsonline.com/Symphonic-Orchestra

Nice! Not sure what I think of the synths/drums with the strings, but melodically it is nice. I like the bass synth too, very crisp. I think a little less wetness on the strings might help it all gel together a bit better.

Reminds me more of the Fable soundtrack, good work. Although I'm a little mix on those slurs to 5ths? Or whatever the cello is doing along side the bassoon in the beginning before the upper reeds come in. It's a little harsh, but me being someone musically trained maybe I'm the only one noticing. Otherwise I like it, i like the lightness yet darkness of it.
I like transcribing things as a hobby, helps me train my ear more too.

Not bad. Has some nice build. A couple of the chords were a little wonky for my taste. Like at the beginning when you're ending your phrase you have the lower strings playing some weird note that isn't part of the chord. I'd had like to hear a period to the phrase. It's not necessarily wrong that you did that, but it definitely makes it more pleasing on the ear for the general audience. I'm curious to how this would sound if you brought the violins down an octave.

Musicology is a lot of fun and probably the most useful music degree.
