HEY I SAW A DESK!
I completely rearranged my apartment after a year and moved in my galant desk like two days ago! I really just wanted to post that stuff is going excellent as a jazz pianist and so is school. I'm at a plateau that is taking forever to advance past, but I wrote out a practice regimen for tomorrow and I think it will make soloing much easier at faster tempos, which is what's holding me back.
For christmas I got this keystation with my bonus from work and I've been transcribing a lot now.
Anyway, this is my setup for now

Not pictured, a yamaha P-105 behind me that is my fully weighted piano. Also not pictured is my the Yamaha C5 that my father owns which is like five blocks away, and I'm there all the time practicing on that.
Also worth mentioning, I got Auralia 4 student edition for christmas. BEST ear training software I've used so far. I'm delving into the basics to complete them, but the higher stuff such as note recognition and absolute pitch courses look awesome. There's tuning courses where pitch differs by a few cents, too. What I'm most thrilled about though are the jazz harmony and chord courses. I would recommend this for any ear training stuff that anyone wants to do, ever. It is AWESOME. The student one is $99, but well worth it imo

Does anyone know what the instrument at the beginning is? I think it sounds absolutely beautiful.

12 string guitar fairly dry or a saw pluck with unison+detune and so much fuckin cathedral-sized reverb Holy shit
Two instruments there so not sure which you meant
That does sound really pretty

Wow, it came out in 2002.
Neat!
What library? Strings sound pretty good. I'm interested to see how the piece pans out too

A darn solid sound you've got there! Really loving the ambience of the instruments. Is this a library or live instruments?
And here's a psychedelic post-rock piece tinged with electronica and dance elements. In other words I have no idea what genre I'm writing in nowadays. Any feedback on song structure and production greatly appreciated!

No it's not it's an asian instrument with reverb I'm fair sure as I've tried to recreate it before but I cannot remember the name off the top of my head as it's late. Eastern Asian I thiiink I will try to dig it up
Glad to see someone else into porcupine tree though :)

It's not synthesized at all it's sampled to my knowledge

anyone know the instrument at 0:12?
Good god seventh chords are the best.
I've been going really hard in music theory lately. I'm still creatively frozen though. Writing harmonies is a lot easier, and I can fairly easily come up with chord and melody progressions. Learning how to find various scales helped a lot, but so did learning about different chord types - suspended, polytonic, augmented, diminished 9ths. I'm pretty sure Haywyre is going to have influenced me sound too much :o
I just get stuck in arrangement. My idea today is to write a story, since I used to write a lot of short stories, and try to make music with the story as an outline. I've always been really creative since the whole ADHD inattentive type thing means I'm usually off dreaming and building universes in my head, but I've stopped using that bit and need to get in the habit of it.
I'm interested to hear about how everyone's years went - what did you do or learn this you? What do you want to do next year? Any big changes, advancements, or opportunities come up?
[editline]31st December 2015[/editline]
If anyone wants a tldr of the best music theory related stuff I've picked up let me know and I'll write em out, probably going to do an article on it so I'll use the tldr as an outline

It's a hammered dulcimer, I believe.

They're my favorite type of chord, so dreamy. I can't help but incorporate them whenever I come up with a chord progression.

oshit hammered dulcimer is right- I have a patch for that on my JV1080 that I've played with a bunch and loved. It sounded similar, but it completely slipped my mind.
And yeah 7th chords for days. I also realllllly like using suspended chords now
Which version of FL studio would be the best bet? The cheap, the producer, or the signature? I hear the Signature version mostly adds just plugins that, far as I know, can be substituted with those in the internet.

The cheap one doesn't allow you to have automation clips, which is kind of awful. I think the producer is your best bet.
Man hammered dulcimers are not Asian can't believe that slipped my mind haha
Stand back guys I'm gonna automerge
I really dig this

I've decided to get back into incidental/film composing, so I did a little warm up jingle:

Well that was lovely. Fantastic composing, and I also like your instrument choices. Gives a kind of tiny but grand feel.

Well... I made this I guess. Style I was going for is similar to Sakuraburst or Shadient.

What plugins exactly will you be missing out? Usually there are upgrade prices, but at the minimum you're going to want (not need, free vsts still work too) the core "studio" type plugins covering you're effects, mixing, and mastering. The cheap student edition is a good way to get your feet wet, i think.
Man hammered dulcimers are not Asian can't believe that slipped my mind haha
You were probably thinking of the koto, which Steven Wilson does use on Insurgentes.
oh, if you're missing automation clips than yeah don't do the cheap one. You won't use automation at first, but once you start to utilize it you'll wonder how did without it.
You were probably thinking of the koto, which Steven Wilson does use on Insurgentes.
No I knew it wasn't a koto precisely because he used it on insurgentes. I forgot the name of the dulcimer but my confusion is because dulcimers are latin

I like this a lot, really like this. I do wish I had production advice, but I don't have much to say. Its well put together and each section is well endowed, and the transitions are articulated nicely. Its a good song, and I like this style. Sorry I don't have more to say- I hate leaving comments like this as much as I hate it when others leave it on my tracks haha. I hope you produce more like it!

Yes please, I'm really interested in what you're doing theory wise! I also don't write much right now, but I'm really interested in how you come up with chord and melody progressions. I really only write when I'm doing it for school and that's all bach chorale stuff.

I really like the build up at the beginning of the song, it reminds me of The Flaming Lips or Panda Bear, I don't usually like dubstep-esk music but I could definitely bang to this. The bass is pretty on point and I can't really spot any mixing problems.
I was testing out my new monitor speakers and made some kind of FF7/Zelda fusion music.

Sure, I'll write it up. It might be a day or two- I've got a few musical ideas for the first time in nearly two goddamn months so I'm chasing those! Plus I'm busy getting ready to start school again and travel bcak home for the same.
I will write it and am glad to do so, but timeline might not be so prompt :)
picking up a guitar properly again after mainly composing MIDI for most of my tracks is jarring as fuck
i've fallen out of touch with this instrument

You nailed it by trying to capture the "Zelda" sound. I really liked that ominous shift the song took at about a minute into it. Over all it made me feel like I was in a forest on a "Last Adventure."
I came up with this little track today. I had originally wanted to make something a little more upbeat and energetic, but I'm okay with the atmospheric vibe that came out of it.

I made a thingy where the drums are ASS SLAPS (in 7/4)

I really love the bass. Maybe eq in a bit more mid range to bring out some more harmonics. Everything is really balanced 2. Could totally imagine some sick breaks in there.
