Got me a keyboard and now I'm kind of lost. Any VSTs you guys would recommend me? Sytrus is fun but I'm missing some stuff, I tried Piano One but I can't get the damn thing to work.
Piano One is weird. Super7 is one of my most recent free plugins- its a cool supersaw-only synth. Otherwise, synth1 is excellent and so is TAL-Noisemaker+Bassline. FL has really good stock synths though, but are you looking for something more acoustic to play? like pianos? For orchestral libraries (and these are tons of fun to play) sonatina symphonic gets the job done for free
Yeah I was looking for a more natural piano sound, I'll check them out thanks! It's my first time seriously playing with a keyboard so it's a fun learning process. I can hold my own with a guitar but never touched a piano in my life or almost. I figured I'd go full cliché and just try and make a small and simple remix of Song of Storms because it's easy enough to recreate on a keyboard. [editline]1st February 2016[/editline] Actually having lots of fun learning all this new stuff. Blows my mind but learning is fun.

Its also good for when you're having trouble with inspiration yourself. I enjoy the everything is a remix philosophy (this video is a good watch, btw)

There's the Salamander Piano which is free and excellent as well. There's also Piano in 162. http://ivyaudio.com/Piano-in-162

Sytrus is fun but I'm missing some stuff, I tried Piano One but I can't get the damn thing to work.
For modern dance music, the big three are Massive, Serum, and Sylenth/Hive (depending on if you are using 32 or 64 bit.) (Probably missing a few since I do not use that many plugins outside of some uhe stuff and a few NI vsts.) Also if you want to be really ripped off, 99% of big charting "EDM" songs are all just Nexus presets. Be warned though, Nexus is a rompler, meaning you do not get really any control of the actual parameters, and they charge like $50 for each of millions of expansions. It's really boring and expensive, but I felt like I should mention it because all chart toppers use it. [editline]31st January 2016[/editline] I guess I should also mention Omnisphere 2, but it's pretty expensive for someone who is just beginning, so I would wait on it.

If you're going to pay for a synth, you should be able to use the damn synth. You should be allowed to be creative. They probably do that so they can continuously make money from it. Someone should recreate all of the Nexus presets with different VST's and release them.
That's really stupid. If you're going to pay for a synth, you should be able to use the damn synth. You should be allowed to be creative. They probably do that so they can continuously make money from it. Someone should recreate all of the Nexus presets with different VST's and release them.
To be fair the way vst romplers usually work are that the source sounds are from expensive/rare synths that are then processed through tons of expensive outboard gear. Like other vsts like IRIS and omnisphere have rompler features, but they also give you heaps of other synthesis options, or in the case of IRIS, a really unique way to edit your sound. Most romplers really go against why my preferred instrument is synths, because in the end even if there are like 2 million presets, that is only two million sounds you will ever get. But with a conventional synth (at least ones with analogue controls) you have infinite sounds at your disposal. I totally get why it exists, and I'm not going to knock you if you use romplers, in the end all that matters is the product of your gear, not the gear itself but I cannot ever see myself thinking it is justified to spend $2500 to get only 12,500 sounds. [editline]1st February 2016[/editline] My mean comment, it's only an opinion, is that the artist sponsor list for nexus proves my point about romplers breeding uncreativity. [editline]1st February 2016[/editline] O and also it uses one of those USB stick DRM things which are by far the worst type of DRM. Say what you will about always online, but EA or whoever won't charge you an extra $50 and a port on your computer just to use the piece of expensive software you just bought.
did ya know kygo uses the same nexus preset in almost every single one of his songs [editline]1st February 2016[/editline] romplers can be done right: jv1080 still gives you ability to modulate and layer a ton of PCM waveforms, so its better than nexus. plus you can then blend natural and synth sounds weirdly in ways you can't on regular synths
did ya know kygo uses the same nexus preset in almost every single one of his songs
The one thing nexus is good for is if you really want that signature sound of your favorite festival DJ, it is most likely that they just used a nexus preset for it. [editline]1st February 2016[/editline] Yea don't get me wrong I love cool romplers, and also stuff like kontakt for weird acoustic sounds. My problem comes in when all you get is the presets, and no way to make the sound your own. Like envelope, filter, and effect controls is not enough to distinguish your version of "wobble preset #23" from anyone else's "wobble preset #23." Stuff like the jv1080, iirc, allows you to take apart the "wobble preset #23" and tweek the sound sculpting portions of synthesis, allowing you to truly make "wobble preset #23" something of your own.

I use presets for sound sketching a lot but by the time I finish tweaking it its still my own, but thats usually because some root part of the sound wasn't quite right. I have just outright used presets for film cues though, but thats mostly due to the timeline of hey yeah i need this in an hour haha thx

In the end the average listener is never going to be like "good song but I can't listen to it because you used wobble preset #23," so really do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

Even when I've used vanilla presets, the amount of FX work I do changes them pretty drastically and while I enjoy sculpting raw sounds from scratch in a synth, I tend to like doing tons of unique FX work more
Have a wip preview of my band's new track. https://soundcloud.com/corn-mouth/collab-vicious-emulsion-cool-intro3-demo/s-bZSYJ
I've been writing this track for a while now. Stop writing songs for awhile untill I watched Porter Robinson live. This track is heavily inspired by one of his track. To be honest I kinda fucked up during the mixing and mastering because I was rushing it.
So I've got a concert and finding a band is hell on earth So far I have me, I can play guitar/bass/keyboards, and I have another guy on guitar/cello However my drummer might be out because he lent his drum kit to some guy who stole it. If any of you are in or near anaheim and want to play a show, hit me up I need all the help I can get. I really need a drummer but if all else fails I guess I could use drum tracks or something
Might of just got a gig playing theremin in a bop ensamble which is cool except I don't listen to bop music and I'm not like a concert grade theremin player (like I know what I'm doing but my pitches are not as perfect as I want them to be.)

I would try to blend the main melody in more with the other sounds. I really dig the subtlety and softness of most of the sounds, just enough there to not be boring but by no means too much to overwhelm the melody/percussion. Probably taste-wise but I don't care for the snare, but if you like it stick with it. I really like how the melody/percussion get more and more choppy through the song almost like the song is breaking, if that's something you were going for I'd take that even further. That's about it, like I said, it sounds pretty clean to me. Here's a little dancey thing I've been working on
Anyone use music programs on their phone? Does android still have a huge latency issue? I'm thinking about buying FL studio mobile
Anyone use music programs on their phone? Does android still have a huge latency issue? I'm thinking about buying FL studio mobile
Yea Android still sucks for music making. I wish Google would realize the market they have served Apple, because music making is at an all time high, and some Android phones are very powerful.
Huh, thats too bad. Having a music app on the phone would serve as a very nice sketchbook, especially with FL mobile and the option to export the files to the desktop program
Sunvox is cool. You can get it for free on desktop. It's the same program on every platform, just different scaling. http://www.warmplace.ru/soft/sunvox/ [editline]4th February 2016[/editline] You can get in on iOS, Android, PalmOS, MeeGo, Windows, OSX, Linux, Maemo, Raspberry Pi, and Windows Mobile.
aah, i've run into a little problem i've made a song that i feel is better than the one i already submitted for the collab, but i don't know if it's already too late to change, plus then there's the problem of it being about 23 minutes long i dont want it to stick out like a sore thumb in the middle of some 3-5 minute songs
I had an assignment today to order audio files from ones that most structured to ones that are most improvised, but instead I just mixed all of them together to make a free form jazz song. :v:

The drums are good but the snare isn't my favourite, feels a tiny bit disconnected from the track and I'm personally not a fan of that style of snare, but I think something a little less wet over the top would sound good. I think increasing the side chaining would be nice, and that's very "in" at the moment. Started a reaaaaally rough draft of some chillwave meets neuro thing. Either way good job, however my only criticism is to maybe lower the high end on the "darker" bit, it just seems a tad bit jarring for the ride to keep going. Nice synthwork, though. --- At first, this wasn't supposed to be genre specific, but then I realized it sounded similar to Noisestorm's music or something. Not that I would compare myself to him, he's way too talented. So I think the genre is called Breakbeat or Breaks, but I'm not totally certain.
Buchlas are beautiful works of art that sound wonderful.
who cares its got buttons and switches galore there are few things better than this those things being old engineering stations in planes: [t]http://www.dh-aircraft.co.uk/misc_images/engstn_20100822f.jpg[/t] and actual goddamn spaceship cockpits: [t]http://ec0c5a7f741a6f3bff65-dd07187202f57fa404a8f047da2bcff5.r85.cf1.rackcdn.com/images/6MTqFipRgFJQ.878x0.Z-Z96KYq.jpg[/t] oh also on-topic I suddenly managed to make a song for the first time in literally 3 months, its about 3:30 in total length which is gr8 because my previous record for the past 3 months was 45 seconds. now I just have to finish it. Its got 35 tracks, which is meh, but its the 7 vocal layers that have to be synced and fix that I'm dreading along with the huge supersaw stack arrangement that melodic dubstep requires. I also need some pads, arps, and some sort of lead. I hate leads. I always make something that sounds nasally and like a childs toy just screeching my music away
