Yeah I bet you can find decent 2nd hand stuff for a lot less, just try to get an experienced drummer to come with you so you don't buy crap.
Do you have a spot where you can play drums, or are you looking at getting digital drums? $900 is a lot of dough that'll get you a good kit, but you can easily get something old&used for less than that or even a brand new kit.
I have a garage that I can play in, and I'd really like to learn how to play traditional drums.
Just chucked some neurofunk together, I'll decide if I want to make a song out of it tomorrow! EDIT: Added a lot more to it.
nice track! really good drums you have going. the main bass synth you have gets a little tiring after a while however, and the EQ could be improved. you could try switching out that synth for another one, that usually adds the necessary variety that a track may need. and as for EQ, try scooping the mids/lower highs a little to clean up the sound. you could also use a frequency spectrum analyzer like SPAN and check to see if there are any bands sticking out too far
I like your rifts there, but it really sounds like you need something on top like a melody or lyrics to go along with your piece. I also think if your going to use that much cymbal you need to turn that down some, it was distracting. Overall a good start. I'm not really sure where you could go with it, but I like the groove you have here. Especially at like 0:12 that was sexy in my opinion. Good work. I really like some of your transitions in there. Now one thing you may want to consider is adding some variety in the rhythms your using for the drums. They sometimes got a little stale for me, like 2:00 to 3:00 the back drum rhythm never changed. Just a thought. ___________________________________________________ Here's a piece I've been working on. I've been listening to a lot of the Battlestar Galatica soundtrack and decided I wanted to make an arrangement of one of the pieces on the album. Unfortunately there isn't a midi of this piece so I mostly had to do this from scratch, but thankfully I had some sheet music I could refer to. Normally this is a solo piano piece, but I added some strings to it because I thought the main melody would sound nice with a violin playing instead of a piano. Anyways Battlestar Sonatica - Bear McCreary (Arranged by me) -
wow great work, can't add much other than maybe shorten the attack on the strings? Other than that though, this track's so good. The guitar solo part was especially sick, and the sound of that vibraphone in the background every now and then is a nice touch.
Any experienced saxophonists around here? I would just like to ask how the double tongue is done. I can tongue pretty quickly but nowhere near double tongue and when I try to do it it ends up slow and clumsy. Any help?
-snip (shit advice)- It also depends on reed strength/mouthpiece size. There are combinations that require only a very light embouchure so you can do it more easily.

I can tongue pretty quickly but nowhere near double tongue and when I try to do it it ends up slow and clumsy. Any help?
I know that I'm not a saxophonist (I'm a tubist/trombonist) but I'm pretty sure that doubletonguing carries over. The articulation from double-tonguing is the 'k' sound from where the back of the tongue touches the roof of the mouth. The amount of distance your tongue travels from the 't' to the 'k' generally is much larger than just doing 't-t' (the tongue has to go from the teeth to the back of the mouth generally). Personally what I've found to help is to practice just going 'k-k-k-k-' and get used to tonguing using the back of the tongue/mouth (start slowly of course), then trying 't-k-t-k-', then later doing the more complex ones (triple tonguing: 't-k-t-t-k-t-' or 't-t-k-t-t-k-', I prefer the first one). I'm at the point that I can't triple tongue or double tongue constantly fast enough to do really crazy etudes, but still faster than single tonguing. But even if you aren't doing constant fast stuff, it's still very useful in instances where you have 3 or 4 articulations very quickly (t-k-t- is generally not as sluggish as t-t-t-, and the same with t-k-t-t- and t-t-t-t-.) But there are also people who can single-tongue ludicrously fast, which is another option. @Number-41 'pfu' in a saxophone is more of a breathy attack and I don't think that's really a proper articulation because you don't have as much control over when the vibration starts. I know that my band teacher gets all worked up if people just huff into their instrument because there's no articulation and it's all off time.

The vocals, bass, snare are too quiet as well. I'd turn them up, because that's one slow sexy groove you have going there. anyone have feedback for this? I'm working on a song, and had this melody stuck in my head for what it could be. Could I get more creative than this? The bassline is a 1 take recording and is a placeholder.

But the reverse can also be true; you can also select a bassline from the melody. My best advice is not to get 'locked down' into the same chord progressions over and over. However, such chord progressions are the foundations of 'popular' music (yes i know that's a massive umbrella term). Also, I know that it's going to be difficult to think outside of that chord progression so just start trying out all sorts of crazy stuff. Remember, you have 12 tones to choose from, and each of those has 3 positions. And that's not even including all the 7th chords, which would easily bump that number up by a lot. Now that said, repetition is the key for you to have the song have a soul; have a motif that repeats over the course of the song but never too much at one time (the beginning being an exception, but 4x max i'd say everywhere else but again this depends on the length of the repeating motif). This gives your song a recognizable tune to it. But feel free to fill up the rest with connecting melodic themes, or differing ones too (bridges, second themes, etc). After that, you can throw in a solo to bridge back to the original theme. Sure the song structure that I've laid out there is simple, and you can go much farther than that. It's just giving you an example of where you can go. As for the motif itself, well... Again, I'm not really a guitar player but I think you can definitely play up higher (though the range of a melodic line shouldn't go too high or else it's not exactly 'singable'...). It's up to you.

How often do you guys write a song? its funny, I used to put one out every week or so, now I might put one out like every 4 months. Uni and stuff gets in the way so easily
If I had my midi keyboard I'd bash a half-finished loop into Ableton every week or so, now maybe once every two weeks I try to come up with something. Also, Teknian & ZeroZero are having a twitch stream right now where they make some DnB in Ableton. Pretty interesting if you're into that kinda thing.
Read OP.
Oh, i did not knew we have rules now. I remember people could post their own threads in the musician gig room for using feedback. Ok, thanks for the heads up.

Uni and stuff gets in the way so easily
Once every... month? I don't really have any solid dedication so I compose when I feel like it, and when I'm busy it can take me a looong time to complete anything (like say, that orchestral piece. It's still unfinished, though it took me about two whole days to finish that 1 minute (though I wasn't working without rests or distractions)).

Currently I've been doing a lot of tracks for my band and we haven't yet recorded anything but in about three weeks we will, planning on posting some of it here because the singer in our band is really, really good.
Hello everyone, i want to show you a song i recently made for a trailer and i would love to hear your thoughts of it

I must be doing something terribly wrong...
Oh man, I'm not familiar with the original, but this is super nice. Great job! Lovely warm bass. I'd add some ghost notes/snares in there though, because the snare starts to give it this mechanic sound the longer it goes on like this. Maybe experiment with having a shorter envelope on the volume of the snare for certain hits or something. Very chill atmosphere you got going on here. I like the contrast of the dry clicky percussion and the washed out atmosphere on the guitar. I can picture some big noisey snare (drowned in reverb) come in eventually though. As for me, I started working on this last night: I can call it done, but I think I might add another minute or so.
I really like the beat of it. would increase the atmosphere a bit but overal sounds great

I must be doing something terribly wrong...
I feel like it's something to do with your embouchure Then again I'm more used to piccolo embouchure than flute embouchure. Just practice on an open bottle to get the angles right and the placement of your lips against the leading edge. Also, try experimenting constantly. After a while, you should be able to get a hang of it and more knowledge of what works and what doesn't, and what's causing you to be out of tune and etc. Much more advanced embouchure work would be dropping the mouth (creating a 'oo' like in 'booth') and making a large space inside the mouth. This makes the air inside your mouth vibrate as well, and makes the sound in general more resonant. Also, your flute shouldn't be horribly out of tune. I know you can bend the pitch up and down by quite a bit but most of the time flutes tend to be pretty centered in terms of pitch. Maybe the cap end is not adjusted correctly, though it's advisable to not adjust that yourself.
hey guys I play guitar, I'd also like to play synth/keys, what would be a good synth for maybe like $1000?
Guess I'll just give feedback on this.
My friend dared me to sing Jack's Lament in one take "right now". I might sing this again and turn it into a serious cover, but I dunno. I also partially made the instrumental for this, since one doesn't exist. Ripped with additions by me. My voice was totally shot from acting, so I couldn't yell or hold a note.
Really good for one take! You have a nice voice and I like your ability to sing in different types of voices. I think you would only have to remove those noises before you start singing and it could be passed off as is. Even the original singing track that you filtered is like a positive imperfection that adds to the track, as it kinda reverbs your own voice. Now that's out of the way, I'll post something of my own. This is one of my home assignements for my application to university. It's sample-based, sampled mostly from Hymnen Region I by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Also likin that super mellow synth that's just chillin in all that. Here's something I kind of just tossed in the crockpot.
my band has it's first gig tonight, thoughts on our first recorded tune?
That beginning, my god, beautiful tunes there. I actually expected a non inspired, regular dark metal or something like that. You surprised me a lot, and in the good way (Sometimes I can be a really douchebag before even hearing someone's work, gotta work on that). I feel like the ride should be a little lower on volume specially on the begininng. That or maybe a more darkened EQ could work. I love the vocals, the phantom notes on the snare drum, very atmospheric. Bravo! A wip trancey stuff I'm making. Let me know if you like it, it's the only buildup and chord progression in 2 years that kept myself satisfied. Any criticism is welcome.
