anyone have any good tips / resources for singing and how to practice? i really want to get better at it, but i don't really know a daily practice routine that would get me results. i pretty much just try to cover songs and record myself.
Yo yall, I've been studying lots of harmony nowadays and am taking composition at school soon with the jazz band leader, so I'm going to be learning about a lot of substitutions, which is SO awesome past diminished and tritone subs. I also got complimented by our singers and the band director for how fast I've progressed and how much my playing has changed over the course of one semester. I'm playing solos close to 200 now, pretty clean, my left hand now has it's own mind. I'm working on getting the walking bass while soloing in the right hand, which is hard as fuck. I hope everyone had a good week doin what you love and learning! It's just now monday here! Also, a cool vamp: Bmaj7(#11 optional), Gmaj7, Fmin7, Bbsus13. Four beats per chord, probably around 120bpm. I stole it from Robert Glasper's Golden Lady (One Mic, One Take) video. It's near the end if you want to hear it.
YES. This always happens to me. I should really consider taking some audio engineering courses, lol.
my advice would be to take a course that includes audio engineering as a module or a course that focuses on another element of music technology. audio engineering isn't the most popular field nowadays and those who get in to it tend to do pretty well from interning at studios and shit [editline]smegma[/editline] does anybody know how to find rappers that don't suck? the only people who rap in my town seem to be chavs in tracksuits who can't spit about anything other than weed. produced some grime y'see

hi I was wondering where to find decent bass guitar learning resources? There are a ton of electric/acoustic guitar tutorials, but not many good bass guitar resources. Thanks in advance!

It's definitely not everything, especially because it doesn't really care about your technique, only about if the note is kinda right.
This song sounds dark as fuck yet it's kinda funny to me lol. Nice job I actually like it. Here's a little song I did in G# minor. I didn't really bother with much EQ or anything, besides on the guitar.
As with all of the advice i'm going to give, I'm also going to put a disclaimer here that these opinions are my own and you may choose not to follow them if you wish. In the end it is your work, and if I am lacking context then it is of no fault of yours. Beginning sounds really nice, though I personally think it can use some more bass. The lowest you've got are synth chords that are reaaaally that low. But that's okay since I'm guessing by the title you're going more for a windy feel, which low bass wouldn't exactly work with. On that note, I think the snare drum works really well in adding to the raspy texture. I suggest looking at... well, I don't actually know exactly what it's called, but when the drummer slides the stick along the cymbals (or is it a brush?) to get a really light... sound? It's hard to describe. The electro-ish hits at 0:14 stick out of the texture a little, imo just a little too much. I would either make it softer, change how it sounds to make it blend better, or lower the pitch. Or a combination. I really like the 0:44 part to 1:06, a decent solo with appropriate accompaniment. But then it kinda drops out when... 1:07 Whoa, what? Just came out of the blue at me. It just sounds weird, that's all, especially when you take out all of the rest of accompaniment at that point. 1:26~ another one of those weird moments. random chorals? Unlike the electro hit thing at the beginning, this one sticks out a lot. It also feels a little weird that you're going straight into a long-sustained note, which I think should be led up to. But other than that from 1:42 it's kind of like an extension to the previous solo. And then around 1:50 you seem to be going off key/mode. Other things that I would advise for you to keep in mind: You don't necessarily have to stay within G# minor. For example, this trombone concerto by Derek Bourgeois changes keys three times in 20 seconds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iueBRU6PewM&t=46s (I'm linking it because embedding it doesn't save the time start thing). He does bring it back to the original key later on. Other things like Mars by Gustav Holst changes keys by a tritone (three whole tones) which simplifies things a little because you can do the exact same key change to get back to your original tone (since a tritone is exactly half an octave). Another thing to keep in mind is that your chord roots don't necessarily have to be notes in G# minor. Though it does take a little experimenting to find the right note. But there are only 11 to choose from, 10 if you want to get rid of the one you're currently on. Experiment, because getting locked into tonality will eventually get boring unless you constantly change it up (which is what solos can do). That said, solos are... a bit of a complication, which I won't get into today. It has a lot to do with variance. ~~~ Right, so that was a, well, 5 month break or something? Oops. I've managed to get a live recording of Opus 27 (the cello and piano duet). Let's see if I remember how to embed soundcloud. Secondly, here's an experimental recording for a piece I composed for concert band: Opus 24 - Fanfare. There's a couple of playback issues, like wind chimes not being a thing, and especially cymbal rolls (which are disastrous here). Nevertheless, here it is: (hello everyone! yes, I am still alive, though I have wonderful things called AP exams in a month. Then I'm running off to Ottawa to play in a national wind ensemble.)
I'm curious, how many synth layers are going on during the intro? It's very full and nice sounding. I'd guess the arp, a bass, and maybe two pads? That's something I've been focussing on getting good at lately. Meanwhile I'm working on some neurostep/trap/thing: (Intro is just a placeholder :v: )
There is a bass, a pad, some keys, 3 plucks playing different parts, 1 violin and 2 arps playing the same parts. I love your track. It has some fucking sick sounds going on man, the intro sounds so menacing. I'm really in love with the bass synths and percussion, seriously amazing job. I can't give enough praise.
did up a pretty simple quickie with my roland to test out the UR12 i picked up
I like the droney synth that's changing pitch it sounds really good when the massive kick comes in. That said the arpy synth sounds a bit strange and I don't like the clap, I don't think it fits that well.
Haven't posted in a while, I make a song I like, finish it(or almost finish it) then take a few months off and make a new one. Really gotta start trying to crank out more material. Sorta feel like I'm plateauing. Song isn't finished yet though, just wanted some feedback on it.
Good work I like it quite a bit. When the sub and all the percussion come in it flows really well, the arps that come and go are really superb. It reminds me a bit of wave racer.
So I'm back again with another new electro house song. I still only sort of know what I'm doing.
It sounds good man, it's really drivey. The percussion is really good I especially like the clap.
maybe this track won't get ignored in this forum like most of my posts do...
I'm always a fan of sampling environmental ambience and it works well in the intro. I think the percussion could use a bit of work, I think what you have now all sounds good except maybe you could use some shakers or maybe syncopate the hats a bit to give it more groove. The main chord progression is good but the chord synth sounds a bit strange. The synths are really nice but I think you could add some pads or some keys to give some more variation. One thing I dislike is the white noise sweeps, they sound really generic and I think you should try using some pads or glitched out cymbals instead. That said solid work it sounds very pleasant.
Anyways, MERRY APRIL FOOLS. My friend and I made this joke rap group called Land Before Rhymes a loooooooong time ago. It's been a year since we've released any new content, but for this special day, we wanted to get at least something out there. It's not done, but it's what we got. It's about aliens. I mean, we're both white as hell. My friend wrote and did the first verse, that's me on the second verse. I did all of the production. Please enjoy:
I think the instrumental sounds good I especially like the drums and the bass, though the arpy synth seems to be clashing a bit with the vocals and drowning them out. The track itself the intro sounds quite empty but when the pads come in at 0:45 and the guitar starts to get more intense it sounds amazing. Really nice atmosphere in this, great work.
Right, so that was a, well, 5 month break or something? Oops. I've managed to get a live recording of Opus 27 (the cello and piano duet).
Really cool sounds, man. Sounds like the introduction for like a villain in a movie or something. What synth are you using for those cool FM sounds? Reminds me of some stuff SeamlessR does. The intro is really awesome, really good spacing with the percussion. I love the balance of percussion and background noise, it makes an atmosphere but also keeps rhythm at the same time, very nicely done. Definitely dig the overall dirty sound you made. Maybe just do some more variation with the synth modulation. You don't really have to go the complex wub wub direction with it (unless you really want to), but maybe a little more variation than just the one note and the other half step up note. Definitely keep working at it, it's something worth finishing. maybe this track won't get ignored in this forum like most of my posts do...
It's a nice little track I'll agree, very simplistic though, maybe add an alternative break after the mid section? I'd definitely tone down the <100hz on your BD though, they've coming across really strongly on my rig and although that's not necessarily a bad thing, if it's put through a decent PA it'll be ridiculously strong. Remember you aren't really meant to get crazy good bass out of your everyday monitors. I like the use of random samples, add more of them in! Could pass as a decent house track in my opinion, just ears on the bass! There's only so much you can really perfect yourself. I can sort-of sing but I'm nowhere near the level of my peers because I've never had lessons. My breathing is all screwed by not using my diaphragm and it's quite difficult to "do" without having some serious time with a tutor. Practice, practice, practice! Managed to get a reason 8 trial, month long! Shame the thing's fucking £330 with no student discount so I'm squeezing what I can out of it for the time being. Did a simplish verison of Tiberian Sun's Valves in the last 4 hours or so. Have attempted to use parallel processing where I can, and not go overly crazy on the bass. Might have over-compressed it but IDK. The fact it's based off a real desk makes life so much easier. Yay for being employed in the entertainment industry!
Whats the best alternative to Logic Pro X for windows? But I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for.
Whats the best alternative to Logic Pro X for windows? I really dont like Fruity Loops.
You've got a few choices. If you like logic because of its interface and design you're probably looking at Cubase as the closest match. If you're looking for a sort of out of the box set of instruments and plugins like what logic has you might be better off looking at something like Reason. As above though I would recommend Reaper. The default plugins are stock standard but very functional, the price is cheap and it supports VST and RTAS so you're not shit out of luck when it comes to plugins.
btw here's my latest, I'd love criticism
Like Colteh said, it feels too long and not enough going on at some points. Especially the first few minutes, there's a lot of empty space. Also, the first and second halves do not feel connected at all, as they are in completely different keys with no relation. The transition between the two keys at 4:00 is quite jarring. It kind of sounds like you've taken different riffs from a sample pack or something. The overall sound design is nice, but working on continuity between chord sequences and adding a few background elements could improve this track.
heres a track im working on, wondering if i could get some opinions on how it is right now before going into the second half!
I don't know much about this style of trap (?) but from my perspective this is really tasty! I love the choppy style of rhythms you've got. From 1:00 onwards (or in the next section) I'd maybe add a simple repeated rhythm, like a tambourine/rimshot etc. to give people something stable to bob their heads to, at the moment it's quite sporadic which sounds sick, but might be hard for some people to follow. I'm working on some Modeselektor/Moderat/Dark Sky style stuff at the moment. This track is almost finished sound design and composition wise, I'll need to go back and mix/master it. Any honest feedback would be appreciated. I definitely love that whole style of one repeated note that sustains through different chords at the beginning, it's an awesome musical texture. Although my personal taste is more towards a more flowing drum pattern with the traditional snare on every other 8th step, the drum pattern works very well together with the rest of the things going on. I like the variation, like when you threw in the reversed note, definitely should put in some more stuff like that. With the structure of the song, you might benefit from switching up to the "4 on the floor" drum kick pattern, but that's only my opinion, since I listen to (and make) a lot of house music. Overall very good sound design, very good use of effects. Keep working on it, every project is worth finishing. It's been a long time since I actually made something that I'm proud of. The second half of this track is like my newborn child
I like the circular panning in the beginning. Until the piano comes in there's honestly just not a lot going on. You need some kind of mellow lead and a somewhat transformative melody. The piano makes the piece interesting but it needs to gradually get more complicated and... expressive. Add a left hand in, play with some syncopation.

Hey guys. I'm looking to play guitar using Guitar Rig 5 as an amp, which means two things: 1. Gotta plug my guitar into my computer 2. Gotta have low latency I am on a tight budget, and I think the Focusrite 2i2 external soundcard looks pretty solid. Anyone know what effect the drums are using at 1:25? It's probably really obvious but I can't for the life of me figure it out (trying to make a cover of this song).

(claps could be less punch, more high end, blahblah) Here's something new from myself:

I think the snare is perfectly fine. I think that the bass after 0:55 gets a bit repetitive (using one note?) and can benefit from a little gliding in places. I feel like at 0:26 to 0:50 you can sidechain the supersaw and let the cute synth through a bit more. Take everything I'm saying with a grain of salt I'm still learning how to critique @_@ -- Here's a song I made My friend hates the vocal track I used so here's the instrumental if you hate it too. I think I did a pretty poor job at mixing the vocals in but you be the judge at that. https://soundcloud.com/kid64/azn-bby-grl-instrumental/s-8gj1U/
