How about musicians? Seems more inclusive. I'm being pedantic perhaps :v:

Nah I think you're right. Most people would look at music production and come to an EDM conclusion - one thing I'd love to see is more orchestral people - woodwind and brass players, etc. I don't think they would look at a music production forum and think it was the right place to post their music
historically that's why this thread, and before that the subsection always benefited by being called the musicians' gig room - its a bit cheesy, sure, but its a broad church
there's already a music subforum that includes both listening to and making music

Yes I think putting producers, performers & composers together would lead to a nicer conversation (as is the case now in this thread). All three categories have a partial overlap in abilities and knowledge and if anyone needs advice, they are much more likely to get it. Separating them would result in just three less active threads...
Also in terms of feedback, a producer might comment on mastering, a composer on choice of chords, a performer on the way something is played, etc. When has mixing people with different disciplines ever been a bad thing anyway?
I feel like the main synth in the beginning could use a little tube saturation. Drums feel nice and solid, and so does the guitar. Maybe a little extra bass too? Pretty good overall though!
In other news, I just finished my collaboration with the awesome Tom Riddle. Feedback (possibly on mixing) on the instrumental is much appreciated:

Awesome! I like the composition, would be nice with a "realer" sounding piano though. I often find that parallel fifths, or just fifths in triads tend to sound the worst when using VST or sampled pianos and offsetting them and having fairly large velocity differences seems to help. The drums feel a little flat, I think there may be a little bit too much going on in the 300-500Hz range which is muddying them up but I'm not 100% on that. Vocals in the first verse sound kinda high passed and a little bit harsh, assuming it's the mic (although there's a little bit later on where it's not the case so I'm not sure), but if not it'd be nice to have some fuller vox. All comments about the version with vox.

We've never been merged with the music subforum even in days gone by - what is the logic in starting now
We've never been merged with the music subforum even in days gone by - what is the logic in starting now
because it's a waste to give the gig room its own subforum, especially considering how we're having trouble keeping a single thread up

True enough, i just think its a bit of a mess is all. Theyre separate fields, really.
Ah well, willing to give it a try - i guess if it doesnt work out theres nothing stopping us from using the subforum in future

This thread has a lot going on in it, at least from how I see it. It functions three ways:
1.) It's for critiquing each other's unfinished work. This could be it's own thread.
2.) It's for discussing music production in general. This could be it's own thread.
3.) It's for posting finished work as a whole. Finished work could receive it's own thread on it's own.
If you look in the forum - I created some threads to reflect how things can be broken up.
If you look in the forum - I created some threads to reflect how things can be broken up.
so pretty much how it used to be
to be fair hakita has a point, when things were broken up that way and we had our own forum it was completely dead in the water. Bringing it all back into one thread was actually a good thing for the section in the long run because it made people pay more attention to each other
Whoops, I'm an idiot - I changed the URL as well now that it's fixed.

I dunno, I think we get some bonuses with moderation. We get to enforce rules and get more personal freedom.
I'm just gonna favourite both and see which one survives but we should at least make a decision quickly about this. There's no sense in dividing between two forums. Can someone set up a poll, I forgot how
musicians has a fucking rad CSS
musicians has a fucking rad CSS
Thanks! I'm done with it for now. There's a glitch with dropdowns, but it doesn't matter if my CSS is implemented or not.

Worst case scenario I just delete the forum. No biggy.
made a strawpoll

I think a link to the subforum in the sticky of /music would be enough to keep new users coming, separate subforum it is

Posted it on the ideas thread in the Music subforum.
Anyone have any cool plugin ideas? I'm just starting to get into vst dev. I'm thinking some amplitude modulation thingy might be fun, and possibly a compressor with the equal loudness contours built in perhaps..
Effects or generators?
Effects.
making a filter could be fun
Make one that reads audio and outputs MIDI data

these funk vibes are wonderful tbh, really love the feel of everything, especially the wind instrument (flute?) which just gives me an instant 70s throwback

heres a remix i made for datdrunkensoldier's new track
It could use a B part for the chorus. Other than that I have no complaints.

That's actually an awesome idea. I was thinking of something similar, where you can beatbox/play drums on your table or whatever and it'll transcribe the midi for drums, although I think it'd work better as a standalone program or something rather than a VST.

Reverbs are pretty fun and there are like a million different interesting algorithms and approaches to reverberation published so you can make some kind of unique ones if you scour around.
I'm really a fan of this one, and so is mutable instruments apparently because it's the algorithm they put into their really popular clouds eurorack module. It has some unique properties like being able to tune the reverb tail and stuff.
Just check out academic institutions like IRCAM, CCRMA, and CNMAT because they all publish a bunch of stuff on more esoteric effects, filters, or sound design stuff, so instead of just making another ladder filter plugin you are making something a bit more special!

The real reason I want something like this is so I can have my EQ track vocals/a sax solo in a song where just boosting brings out everything else with it.
[editline]4th June 2016[/editline]
Which I can still do with a standalone program, it's just less convenient.
Well my plugin fun has started. Can't wait to make a bunch with ridiculous over the top names. A few soon to be seen:
Sub saturatererer (Make your 808's 800008's)
RFWS - Real f*cking wide sounds (the stereo enhancer you never knew you needed)

Make something with formants
