Pretty basic question but I can't get anything I'm happy with. Where would one source kick samples for trap, like so: Not talking about the 808/sub, but the actual kick. It's a nice an powerful sample but doesn't sound like "traditional" kicks you use in other genres, and I don't have any suitable samples kicking about (heh).
If you want to be as generic as possible just buy all the vengeance sample packs like all trap producers do. [sp]Ok most probably don't buy them but better to be legit and support people and stuff.[/sp] Probably where that kick originated from tbh. [editline]10th July 2016[/editline] But before you go spending a bunch of money on sample packs you may want to try synthesizing your own percussion. That way you can really get your drums to sound exactly how you want them to sound without having to settle for something close.
Overall really good. Drums have a really nice new beat feel to them, but the snare sounds kind of odd. Sounds like you have the 909 snare decay and then a very slight reverb after it, and it sounds strange having two different "release" effects playing at the same time. Might cut down on the bass on the drums a tiny bit but that's probably just personal preference. The supersaw at 0:38 also sticks out a lot and sounds harsh, it sounds like there's some frequency range that's too loud or something. If not fooling around with an equalizer, turning the volume down and increasing the reverb a little may help with that. I made piano house/eurodance
Loving this! This sounds so 90's, it's really good. Some critique: The piano sounds a bit too midi to me. I don't know if it's a stylistic choice but I would try to give it some depth with a chorus or phasing. Very good mixing though! It sounds really clean. I've been testing some new vst's out and had some fun with it: VST's that were used: Korg Wavestation, D16 Devastor, D16 Redaptor, D16 Antresol, Syntorus, NI Solid Bus Compressor, NI Kontakt 5 Hope you like it!

It's consistent, and there's enough variation in the first minute to keep it from becoming repetitive, and just shy enough of relaxing to be engaging background music to listen to while doing something. I really like the introduction of the guitar-sounding instrument at 1:10, it's natural and meshes well with the rest of the song. I didn't get any sleep, and with sleep deprivation comes experimentation I never really make any really fast music, so I decided to try my hand at it. Came out kinda weird. I neglected to properly master this one, though.

I really appreciate that you took your time to listen to my track and for the very kind words :) [editline]12th July 2016[/editline]
Hmm, all of the stuff I make ends up sounding so flat and lacks dynamic - I'm a bit puzzled and at a loss because I can't tell if it's an issue with my composing or my mixing. Considering I'm not very experienced with mixing, I suspect that's where most of my issues lie. Do you guys have any tips for how to improve the dynamics in a song via mixing, and how to make it sound less like a flat mess when several instruments (synthesizers) are playing at the same time?
Everything begins with the composition, are you building dynamics with the synths? Automation is your friend when it comes to dynamics as well. How would you describe the flatness? A lot comes from the original sounds you use, if you have something that sounds bad from the start then you'll have a really hard time to make it sound good when you're mixing. [editline]12th July 2016[/editline]
Sorry I didn't notice anyone else's links in the thread let me fix that [editline]1st July 2016[/editline] That's actually an amazing mix It reminds me of a slightly less hyper-melodic Anamanauchi I have to ask, what Synths/VST did you use?
I use Nexus for most of the melodic synths, and layer the main synths (not the arpeggio synth) with a 3xOsc 1-2 octaves lower to get a really crunchy and full sound from the synths. :) The drums are EzDrummer 2.0, I really recommend it for anyone who wants drums that can sound realistic!

It sounds great, although the sampled string sounds like a harpsichord (and shouldn't do the sliding thing at 1:20). Great sense of motion, the sloppy timing is charming.
This is some funky stuff man I'd love to hear more of it, Followed! Regarding the synth, I feel adding modulation or more subtractive techniques would detract from the charm of the whole thing, and make it feel out of place. If anything, I would make the synth more lo-fi. Like bounce it to cassette, lower the sample rate to around 36k or so to get that old casio feel, or even record it using the same mic you used to record the guitar. Would help it fit into the mix more on an aesthetic level. If you want to go above and beyond, you can even make a shitty spring reverb out of an old pen spring... but that's probably too much to ask for. [editline]12th July 2016[/editline] If you want to go full lo-fi you can even make your synth purposefully alias, though a similar effect can be had by just dropping the sample rate, to make it sound even more like a dollar store synth that someone buried in the ground for a few years before immediately playing. [editline]12th July 2016[/editline] Kind of feel bad since I leave comments on other people's work here without posting anything of my own but I haven't made a true standalone single song in a while not for a larger project. If anyone is interested in hearing my own stuff though, I put out an ep a week or two ago. Just PM me and I'll send you a link. Still not totally comfortable posting stuff on public forums that can link back to my irl stuff.
Woah, this is pretty neat. The mix is kind of iffy, I would've preferred a sub bass during the "drop" at 1:09. Speaking of, the drums were really quiet and tiny, compression could totally fix that right up. Another thing to add, near the beginning, the melodic fills were really cool, but it seemed that some were out of key, or hitting some notes wrong. Either way, super cool. --- Haven't posted here in a while, have I? Here's something I've finished today. Glitch hop?
I am always so amazed by people who can do glitch music well, and you, you can do it really well! What are you using to make those really highpitched sounds? Sounds like birds whistling almost, and a mix of the sound when you pick up coins in mario. I think the best part for me is what happens at the 2 minute mark, the track has really nice sounds and effects going earlier on but this part is where I start to really bob my head, damn that's some good shit yo! I've continued making more punk-techno music (Honestly, I've no idea what to call my music, so I'm inventing my own genre now :V), here's the latest [editline]15th July 2016[/editline]
Hey man I dig the song, the drums are interesting. I'm gonna have to hear it with my other headphones to really judge the mix itself. But overall nice progression. This track is unmastered with little eq if any, I wrote it in C minor as far as I can remember.
I like this! Interesting mix of instruments, and a very solid use of both orchestral instruments such as the strings and choir with electronic stuff with it :) I'm kinda reminded of Frank Klepacki (main composer for Red Alert/Command&Conquer) and this wouldn't sound too much out of place from either of those games. [editline]15th July 2016[/editline]
Those drums are so punchy dude, I love it. Really well mixed and I love the panning on the rhythm high synth (not the lead, idk what to call it). The phrases are really well spaced out, really well structured. Love the dynamics on the percussion, especially the hi-hat groove. Those subtle hits really flesh the beat out. --- Excuse the vocaroo recording, but this is just something I wrote yesterday; not finished yet. Just have a few questions: What do you guys think of the harmony in the beginning? I plan on doing more but it's just a proof of concept; I'm not too well versed in mixing background vocals so I would love tips. I don't know if it comes through but I mixed the first harmony backing vocal part way to the right and the second part way to the left. So I know that's a start but it still sounds... too obvious? I might need some help with that. Also I don't know if I should add another vocal track over the chorus, or if I should just keep it the way it is. [editline]8th July 2016[/editline] I might also just be overlistening the hell out of the harmony so it might just sound fine, my friend said it sounded great but I need a second opinion.
The harmony sounds fine too me! You should definietly use them more! The chorus you could just have vocals just doing aaaahs or ooohs, that way you'll get some more punch in the chorus and still keeping it kinda fresh if you want to use harmonies for the verses (to end every bar like you're doing now).
Quick question, I've found some dude selling a Mixvibes U46MK2 for 10€ because he can't find a cable to test it out, should I pick it up? Looking at the pictures it seems pretty nice.
I mean there's not much to lose with a price like that.
Man what the fuck, I really wanted that thing but then looking at his other stuff it looks like that he tried selling it as defective, would've really sucked if I bought that hoping it would work fine since apparently he had no cable to see if it worked. What a dickhead. [editline]16th July 2016[/editline] I'll ask what's broken about it but I don't know if it's even worth getting for 10€ and then try to fix it without even knowing what's wrong with it. He'll get a fiver at most for it if I can fix a simple thing like a solder joint.
I bought the mixvibes thing for 8€ and guess what IT FUCKING WORKSSSSSSSSS AAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHA Really happy right now, now I have two super clean line-in including support for record player(!!!) and I can STILL plug in a mic and have all be on separate channels.
Understand there's some theory buffs around here so I thought this might be the best place to ask. Anyone know of any groups/bands/whatever which have a tonal language similar to late Scriabin? It's important to note this doesn't mean atonal/serial/etc. but rather what is often called mysticism. Quite a unique style found in the early 20th century but soon faded. For example like this, this, this, or especially prometheus and the poem of ecstacy. Bit of a niche question but it would be incredible to find non-classical composers who have this style.
I'm feeling a little uninspired at the mo and would love to do a collab with someone. Kinda thinking some sort of popular-esque EDM genre, something like Jack U or some future bass. Maybe with some darker influences? I dunno!
I went and released an EP with my music https://skriket.bandcamp.com/album/techno-punk-the-ep I'm not sure what genre it is so I'm "inventing" my own, I call it techno punk because that's probably what my two main inspirations are, and because I combine punk rock/rock riffs with techno synths. The idea is to have something released on Spotify when autumn comes, but first I have to crank out some more shit. Listen and if you enjoy it, share it <3

I know I personally hate when people say this because it's typically not what I'm really going for in my music, but this sounds like a good video game track. Very good songwriting, very dynamic and energetic. With your style, you might be able to benefit from playing around with stereo shaping, to give the track a bigger soundstage. Perhaps the drums could use some gentle compression so they're not as drowned out at certain parts, but they still sound good, just my own suggestion. Two tracks: a sort of pop-style EDM kind of thing and a 100bpm track that's still in progress that i'm just messing around with, thought it was sounding good enough to post here.
Couple personal thoughts I wrote while listening: Purpose: Catchy melody riff. The main melody is a bit too loud & poppy at the beginning when there isn't too much else going on, started to grind on my ears a little bit. The change at the drop was real nice. The song has a nice positive vibe. I think I might at a section to the song with a different melody or a variant of the melody about half way, because the section at 1:52 started to feel a little old, my ears wanted to hear something different by about 2:05. It would also give the drop at 2:40 a bit more impact I think if it was a return to the original melody. The ending section with the repeated 3 notes made we think the melody should be dulled a little bit, just a bit too sharp. Could just be my headphones though. Swing: Intro beat super groovy. I felt it could use a small fill after the first couple repeats though. The bass line is nice and minimal, but fits the groove real well. Overall I like the vibe of the song. 1:17 is nice, the little melody that pops in (I don't know terms for things despite being in band for 10 years) is a good support to the base line. Again, similar to Purpose I felt the song could have benefited from a small bridge. ----- I've beat boxed as a habit incessantly for like a decade now and I finally got around to trying my hand at making beats on a computer. I'm a total beginner, only made about 3 minutes of music prior to this little song. I'm using Reaper and a bunch of free plugins I could find. The intent was a kind of club fight feel (ala John Wick). The drum line is supposed to sound kind of like a heartbeat. Not sure why I added asian drum stuff to the end, but I kind of liked it. I'm so early into making music at the moment that I'm really just experimenting and find sounds, techniques, and melodies I like that I can use later. Here is an earlier song where I was trying to go for a Cyber Punk feel, hence the name Street Sam (Street Samurai). Try not to let the long boring and crappy intro ruin it, or the FX snaps and crackles: Try not to tear me apart too bad haha, I realize the mixing and stuff is probably awful. --- Also, man this thread has died down lately.

Thanks for the very kind words! If you don't mind, would you care to elaborate a bit more on how to stereo shape better?
The buildup is fantastic, love the synths and the composition and the mix is on point. I found the drop quite anti climatic though - Where's the bass!? The snare and kick feel a little weak too, like they're sitting on top of the mix rather than in it. I think it's mostly mixing issues, with maybe a few compositional tweaks to get the bass present, too, and in general it's a super promising track. Is it egotistical to write my own entrance music? The clean vocals in "VM is back again" are a nice touch, reminds me of Anaal Nathkrakh a bit. Also the vocals on M.O.R.I are pretty dope, especially the clean backing stuff. I'd say MIKA is my favorite. Firstly, because the gypsy reggae caught me off guard, and secondly, the heavy part sounds pretty f. beastly, nice tone overall. The vocals really make this stuff stand out, despite being really over the top and silly, it actually manages to sound fresh at the same time. Now, as for the production, even before I read that you used EZMIx for the guitars, it was painfully obvious that some plain VST's had been slapped on the guitars. The distortion sounds flat and, well, a bit like sand and gravel, if you get what I mean. There's the always-present high frequency hiss with these VST's, which really makes the high gain tones flop. I sense a lack of bass and low mids. I feel like, if the bass guitar was more present in the mix, the guitar tone would probably benefit from that. Other than that, I dig it. Love the quirkiness and somewhat fresh approach to a genre which is one of the most susceptible to fall in the "heard it all a gazillion times before" category. Anyway, here's a piece I came up with a few months ago. Basically it's electronica with post rock guitars added for good measure. Any feedback on the production and composition greatly appreciated. Speaking of mix, turns out this trappy thing is both incredibly fun and incredibly challenging to mix well. I'm getting so close to where I want it, but I really want to get a tiny bit more clarity and perhaps punch in the drums, but it's about as loud as it's going to get I think. Working out the sweet spot for the reverb on the synths is an artform all of itself, I think. I cut it down a little just before the export and now I feel like a tiny bit more would be nice, but I've been back and forward on that for hours now!# I'm considering transposing it up a semi-tone or two as that might let me get away with less saturation and gain on the sub, but I'm not entirely convinced. [editline]27th July 2016[/editline] Tried it with my subpac, again, still lazy, and the bass is pretty clear so it seems fine for 2.1 setups and fuller range headphones. [editline]27th July 2016[/editline]
At first I thought this is going to be another generic modern death/deathtrash record, but I actually like the variety of songs.
I would move the woodblock-y synth part, you know, the thing in the front of the mix, a bit back and put the guitar in its place. Or just add some more spacious reverb + delay to taste to it. Also during the break I would add some more ambience to the background to add to the feel. The drums feel programmed too. Like especially at the end the snare hits are all the same velocity and sound, so they get old. Speaking of drums, they seem a little far back, but it is not that big of a deal. Nice track overall though!
why is everyone trying to avoid giving feedback to my shit track reeeeeeeee
why is everyone trying to avoid giving feedback to my shit track reeeeeeeee
it's good but the bass cutting out on the build-up sounds a bit awkward in my opinion, around 1:04
