Man, I missed this thread and the like five awesome posters in it. I wish I had music to post, but I made Loss and that's about it lately. I've been working on the score for a short film for an FP'er, and that's been really stressful (my fault) and I wouldn't do it again. Turned something fun into a job, tbh. I'm pretty proud of how Loss turned out though, I'll post it when I get home tonight and have time to give some criticism. Can definitely think how I could improve it, but spent a lot of time on mastering. Multiband compression is just about the best thing ever, btw. Sometimes works like magic after reverbed snares too.
Honestly multiband compressors, active EQs, and all that other boring stuff are super cool once you get past the learning curve of figuring out wtf is going on with all of those knobs and "vu meters" (don't really know of a better word for the digital equivalent.) Like they will not drastically change anything, but adding them really does refine your song because of the amount of control you get over your end sound. [editline]3rd August 2016[/editline] Also I just finished building my poor man's eurorack equivalent of a buchla easel with some "200e" bits thrown in so I'll post west coast noodling soon! [editline]3rd August 2016[/editline] You never realize how cool randomness is until you have a module that output 14 different forms of random voltages btw!
Sounds really awesome!! You nailed all the trap/dubstep tropes while adding a wee bit of dnb, super neatoooo thought the kicks at the beginning could use just a smiidge less volume though heres just a random fun 1 day thing, sampled from my favorite song of all time
Agree with the comments on the snare missing volume, punch, and high end. This song has a nice bassline, but a drum with a bit "more" to it could help you a lot. I'm thinking of Nu Disco and the better stuff in Tropical House when I hear this - borrowing ideas from these genres could help you a lot, I believe. Some vocal samples and other various bits of flair would go a long way, essentially. Solid base here, though!
Thanks. Your track is really cool, love all of the elements, really. My only complaint would be the drums, snare especially, seem to lacking quite a bit of high-end and maybe overall volume. Did the transposing and worked on the mix a little more. Plus an animated video! Thoughts? EDIT Newer version
Quick protips on video stuff - make sure to get the audio track as AAC. Youtube actually will use this for your audio, and ensure that you're exporting the audio at sufficiently high quantity when you do the final export. Check your levels too, maybe, as this feels a bit louder than most stuff on YT but that could just be me. The track is well constructed so far, with enough going on to keep the listener interested. I might add an arp in the background, or maybe a pad. Something to fill the empty harmonic/tonal space, because the rhythmic space/sound area (idk) is filled out enough but harmonically it's still a bit sparse. The stereo field feels well used and filled out, too. Overall, I'm really drawing a blank on criticism for your track since it seems well built already and is but a short snippet. What direction would you take this, and what sort of genre would you place it in? This might help me think of more to say. I'm getting sort of a trap vibe and sort of a glitch hop vibe, but anything else I might say would change based on what genre this is. I'm sorry for my not-so-deep criticism. I'd like to do more, and I probably will go back a few pages and do so when home. I just had a quick 15m downtime at work so thought I'd try to give some feedback. Here's Loss: It turned into a much longer song than I originally intended. The origins of the inspiration for the song are pretty unfun, so the name is apt. The chord progression is one I wrote ages ago, I write loads of harmonies and don't use the vast majority of them. Splenda used to receive a barrage of them, lol. I'd like to do some work on this, but school got crazy and I've been working tons this summer so any free time for music has been film score stuff. I need to change my workflow though, I can hardly use my midi keyboard in my current space and feel a grid controller would be of tremendous benefit if I could afford one. anyways, hopefully being back will motivate me. I actually was really hoping to make an EP, and I have two potential songs that I could probably flesh out, but I totally underestimated the amount of work that'd be and how much work school would be during my spring quarter haha

Big fan of your inclusion of the rain at the break ~2:50! (I am kind of biased because I use field recordings in literally every song I make nowadays.) Other than that, I would either lessen the reverb on the hihats, or gain more reverb on the snare. As of now your drum kit seems a bit disconnected (not like massively, but it's the little things that matter the most!) Try just having a reverb as a send/auxiliary channel and running both the snare and hats to it. Also the bit at ~5:00 doesn't really gel with me that much. Like its a nice idea, but the transition between instruments is a little harsh. Maybe even tailing the reverb of the "piano" into the guitar will help glue it together. It's a nice track, I just like to point of really small things! Also in terms of midi controllers, I used to be the type of person that would buy tons of them in the hunt for the "perfect midi controller" and then finally realized that since I am so married to Ableton I should just buy a push. Now ~2 years later I have not even thought about any other midi controllers, except of course the push 2... It is built like a quality instrument, so none of that cheap plastic-y feel you get with some keyboards, and it makes your workflow stupidly fast. It's scale modes are probably really good for your type of melodic music too, I make really simple music in terms of melodies so I'm not the best resource for judgement on this part. Like I still use keyboards every now and again, but 99% of the time I am making "in the box" music all I have on my desk is my push and maybe my maschine, but that is just because Native Instruments doesn't let you control maschine with literally any other controller. Now if only I could get a Buchla Thunder for a good price... [t]http://www.audities.org/collection/jpgs/buchla_thunder.jpg[/t]
Loss:
I like the chord progression and whatever instrument you used for it, I feel you could have done something to make it pump more, I feel like the sound of the chords that kick in @ 1:09 could be a bit more dynamic, I know a similar tune somewhere that I could use for an example but can't remember the name. It sounds like they are sidechained with the drums but that might just be frequency masking or my stupid ear. I made a tune today, quite dark, not sure if anyone would particularly be interested in it, and it's not really polished but I like the overall feel of it, I know it's a bit overdriven, but any criticisms/ideas are welcome. Other than that, you got lots of atmosphere in your synths, but none in your drums. Kind of makes them feel off in a sense. Try adding some reverb to even the background percussion. Would be really cool if you have breaks with crazy reverb happening back there to go full uk vibe, which it seems like you are going for. [editline]3rd August 2016[/editline] Have some experimental west coast percussion-y sounds to satiate you on the summer day. Not a song, but just a break up from all of this east coast stuff that floods this thread. All analog, no midi sequencing, etc, etc. (Also one of my low pass gates "leaks" but I felt like it was pretty cool for this so I used that one.)
Does anyone in this thread listen to Front Porch Step at all? They're really good, and I like their writing style. Here's one of their songs.
Forgive the bad improv song, it was the first time trying to play harmonica and guitar at the same time. How does the quality of the recording sound though? I havent done anything to it, just raw input from the mic.

Really cool percussive sounds you have going on, but it's hard to judge how well they work out of context and not hearing them in a song. At least for me, anyways. I'm sitting here listening to this and it's cool for what it is, but I really have no idea what to say about it, lmao. Anybody like rave-y dance music? Couldn't help, but think of the rave scene from the Matrix haha. Wasn't a huge fan of the downward sound that started at 1:04, didn't really fit the dark / grungy vibe of the rest of the song and there wasn't really any pay off for it either, just kind of felt unnecessary. The bridge was super nice, a good change of pace from the first part of the song while still maintaining the driving beat and general bounce. Really made the transition back into the original beat quite satisfying. The new sounds added in for the second half (except the downward sound again) were quite fitting. Over all, as far as the very little rave that I have listened to, this was pretty decent. -- Made a couple more little things since last time, don't know if I'm any good at this, but I'm having a lot of fun doing it anyways, and thats the main reason I'm doing it. Really good stuff dude. ___________________________________________ Here's something I just finished. It's another track for the Portal 2 mod, Portal 2 Repercussions.
I don't think the original Portal 2 soundtrack uses square waves, try pulse instead. Be careful with the orchestral stuff, the soundtrack was made specifically to be completely electronic. You should use imitation synths. It also needs more arpeggiating (and saw waves) to really solidify that Portal 2 feeling.

And also the two notes betweeen 0:36 - 0:37 are inharmonious. Keep only one of them (whichever sounds better). The rest is an amazing experience. Really feels like you're trapped somewhere. So, yeah. Here's a perfect example why it works. The mod is supposed to have it's own feeling, not to copy the original game. https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1520068&highlight= [editline]9th August 2016[/editline]
Add just a little bit of vibrato to the square plus some subtle short reverb.
Gotcha, I'll maybe look into fixing that reverb and vibrato some. Actually the notes that you're referring to are directing from the chords being used, haha. I know exactly why you're pointing them out too, they're on the off beat so rhythmically they're going to pop out more. But I can promise you they are not inharmonious. Whatever I do is completely intentional, haha. I thought for sure you were going to comment about the high violin at 0:46, that's inharmonious. Well technically it is. It's playing a dissonant note on top of the current chord progression. But thanks dude for the suggestion. I'll look into fixing up that square some.

This Portal 2 Repercussions is setting up to be quite the mod, everything I've seen about it is super well done.

Not sure how I feel about that initial tremolo being a sine, it might feel better as something more sudden like a square. Also the vocal samples feel kind of out of place, maybe distort them a bit. Also lol gunshot. Piano bit at the end is a great idea, you should make the rhythm in a different style so it sounds like it's sampled from a different song.

I definitely like the intro, feels real chill as the title implies, the footsteps or whatever make for a great background percussion. The snaps are pretty nice too. The piano is maybe a bit harsh in the beginning imo, unless you intend it to be a super sharp contrast to the rest. Really unique sound after the drop, can't say for sure if I like it or not, but its super interesting. I liked the bit at 1:32 when it starts to pick up and you add the double beats, really groovy at 1:44 especially, digging it. I like the contrast in pace between the lead up to the drop at ~2:00 and the pace after the drop, interesting juxtaposition. I agree with Ott on the vocal samples, not really "dooo" ing it for me. Piano just feels too harsh to me, beginning and end, I don't know enough about this stuff yet to know what to suggest, but maybe make it a bit damper? Or change the attack? Nice though anyways, you have a unique style that you should definitely try to refine. -- Got inspired to do something a little less D&B and a little more soundtracky. Really interested in the Dyatlov Pass incident recently and the term "compelling unknown force" is just so compelling haha, so I tried to make something that fit that term. Hope you like.
Anyone know anybody who do any streams or anything of when they sit down and make music? Feel like it might help me get somewhere.
You know, this might be a fun thing to do! I could maybe try and stream when I make music, all I need to do is to check how I do it I guess. I'm sort of stuck in a weird creative rut where I come up with cool riffs, but no idea what to do with them. I'm going hard on doing an album right now of the same music I've been posting for some time here, and so far I got about 9-10 tracks. Problem is, for some it is really hard to come up with melodies. Like, melodies isn't my strong suite, but I can't physically come up with anything on some songs. It fucking sucks! Anybody else get stuck in writing songs that are all too familiar in structure? I try to stay away from intro verse bridge chorus verse bridge chorus ad infintum, so I keep making some sort of intro verse bridge verse bridge chorus stick bass solo then a completely new riff that I probably only go with once or twice :v
I'd quite like to stream, but I feel like a lot of my projects never go anywhere. I guess it'd be better to not start from scratch - or maybe pre-prepare a start to a song to check it "works" and re-create it then continue. Also I dunno where I'd find people who are at all interested in watching. And I guess all of your software would have to be kosher, too.. (More of a general comment, of course!).

It's nice and sparse which I like, it can be quite hard to refrain from adding lots of elements. I think it'd be cool to have some more "weird" kinda liquid-y percussion in parts. I think I already hear something kinda like that so maybe bringing that up would be nice. The sorta inharmonic synth around 1.45 is awesome. Made a silly EDM thing in an hour today: -
