Reading the OP made me so happy. Honestly, seeing you raise like 400 or whatever moths is just so... amazing.
Really awesome! I want to see more of this, I am waiting for the big summer surprise
Those creatures are beautiful. Too bad I'd have a shitfit if I saw one close to me.
This thread is excellent.
Silence of the Lambs, anyone?
I was out of GD for quite a while, and then got back to see this. And I am happy I got here, this is a fascinating thread. I thought it was just a joke, but Facepunch have once more proved me wrong. Too bad about the Imperial Caterpillar though, I kinda hoped it would have hatched properly. But well, nature has its ways, I suppose.
I remember when this thread was first made, aww :)
holy shit such awesome photos
So do they just live a few days then? Is that why they eat so much as caterpillars? How long does that food give them to live?
yeah they live about a week
I'll probably do some similar experiments like this in a year or two. Do you have any suggestions to what species I should try it with here in Norway?
I know nothing of norway moths so no, sorry :v:.
Have you ever thought of putting different species together inside a controlled environment? Could either be predators or just species that affect each other in some way.
you mean like seeing if they eat each other? there's only one type of caterpillar I know of that is carnivorous, and it just eats little bugs and shit. As for how they effect each other, I dunno. I would be interested to see how two different types of social caterpillars do together, social as in the types that eat leaves all together in bunches. Be neat to see if two different kinds just combine or are smart enough to separate themselves.
Those moths are beautiful, I hope you do more stuff like this in the future.
i will be for next summer.
Silence of the Lambs, anyone?
beaten by two pages
So we won't see any more projects until next year? :saddowns:
So we won't see any more projects until next year? :saddowns:
I should have a new thread up in July.
cant believe i just read the whole thing....and i fucking hate bugs but those are actually kind of cute in a buggish way nice thread
This is brilliant Postal, you know more about Moths than I do. :3: I'm surprised you had the patience to count the eggs. Biggest caterpillar I have ever raised is the Elephant Hawk Moth, which is native to England. The caterpillar has eye like markings, so it looks like a snake. Well, thats what I thought it was. Fucking awesome thread. What kind of equipment do you need to do something like this?
Postal, what camera do you use?
Wow I remember this thread from when you just started. this is awesome
I want to grow some little creatures or bugs now. Damn you postal!
I just realized that this huge moth I have pictures of when I saw it was Luna moth. Holy shit, should I post them here?
My dad found a polyphemus moth the other week. I think it's a girl. For size reference, that's a 120GB iPod classic. Not a Nano.

Thats pretty awesome
I remember this thread, it was :3: I like Moths, not so much as the massive fuckers that fly around your room at night and end up hitting you in the face. I'm talking about the ones you get in England
This thread always reminds me of that Gone with the Blastwave comic with the moth. :3:
