This thread again! Looking forward to more caterpillars. :3:
That was a sick time lapse postal! Too bad about the imperial one though, really wanted to see it hatch :smith:
oh this thread is back sweet
aaa
well seeing as how it's bumped again I guess I could go through my camera and post pics I left out before. Also I updated the OP with a sort of final count, and a new picture.

I'll see what else i have. And yeah, if all goes well I'll have a new thread in a week.
caterpillars fucking suck
they ate all me passion fruit off me vines
[editline]20th June 2011[/editline]
now the vine wont give passion fruit and i cant get that tropical taste i desire
Looking through the thread I definitely learned a lot about caring for these things. Those extreme size differences were a bad sign, they just weren't eating enough for some reason. I did try to keep over crowding down to a minimum in the cages, but who knows, with so many tiny caterpillars it's hard as fuck keeping them alive and well equally. I'm never gonna try to raise more than 80 caterpillars again, it was insanity to even try holy hell. I'm pleased with my final count of ~93, regardless. Yeah, a lot died, but in the wild it probably would've been much, much less surviving, assuming the moth even managed to lay any eggs at all before getting eaten by something.
I actually just found a luna moth outside two weeks back. Neat to still see them around.
Can't wait to start seeing more pictures. :buddy:
I hate moths, probably because the ones I usually see are all grey and brown.
Honestly. Ew
Some of them actually look really neat. Coming from someone that is terrified of even ants by the way.
I would do this but the only caterpillars i have around here are these

which turn into these

I think that's the very first caterpillar I ever raised actually.

The larva stings so ill steer clear
Nice. Luna Moths are pretty fuckin' cool.

Uh you sure about that? I was never stung by one and google says nothing about the caterpillars having stingers. I'm pretty sure they're harmless, just like the moths.

Oh, seems you're correct, darn you local myths :argh:

Ah. It's pretty common to assume any hairy caterpillar is poisonous. Really though if you don't what kind one is, it's probably best just to assume it is.

Wouldn't it only be poisonous if you eat it or get chemicals on your hands?

Are any moths or butterflies actually poisonous?
I love when this thread makes its comebacks. I must have rated it friendly at least 10 times by now. Have you got any other animal raising projects on the go, Postal?

yeah I mix up venemous and poisonous a lot.
Are any moths or butterflies actually poisonous?
I don't think any can hurt you, unless you eat it. If the host food plant is poisonous, the caterpillar and thus the moth/butterfly will be, since they're ingesting it. Like the Monarch, for example. I don't know if that's always true, though.

If all goes well I'll have a new thread in about 2 weeks, with something really awesome
Oh my goodness they are absurdly cute, and also look slightly surreal.
One night when I was a kid I turned around and saw a big Luna moth on my screen, freaked me out. Then my parents told me what it was and I was in awe.
Postal is the most bad ass motherfucker on this forum with all this crazy bug shit he does. I remember reading this thread when it was first made. We need more A+ posts like this.
That was a cool OP.
Giant moths are awesome.
The little ones, not so much.

The other night a little miller got into my room and he was beating the fuck out of my face by flying in to me constantly.
I still found this the craziest part

It was like he was 50% moth and 50% caterpillar. He was not only walking with his new legs, but wriggling his body like a caterpillar at the same time. It wasn't until he held still to let his wings fill up that he pulled in the caterpillar body and stopped wriggling it around, which i think was because all the fluid was going from that extra long body, into the (soon to be) giant wings.
Metamorphosis is fucking crazy.
Beautiful creatures. I love 'em.
I was outside once, there was a black caterpillar that had black spikes all over it.
Do you know what those turn into? And do those spikes on any caterpillar ever sting or something?
Awesome. I remember I raised some caterpillars from my backyard a few years back. Was fun.
If i could i would raise these:

Which turn into these:
