That makes the numbers predictable. Well, sort of. Isn't it a better idea to just save the numbers upon generation?
Yeah, the seed should come from time(NULL) or something alike. For replays of some sort, the seed can simply be saved. So, how's it about #fpcoders as VoiDeD suggested? It really is deserted, so I guess we can freely use it for this project; and now even unregistered users can join:
[21:34] VoiDeD sets mode: -r
:) Instant messaging will make discussions much faster :D Different timezones might be an issue?
Also, unmute the channel. I can't write anything :v:
Yeah whoops, unmuted now. :P
Okay okay, fucked up poll system is fucked up. This is the final: C++, Bot battles, IRC. I'll help and organize around but I will no longer participate in the project once everything is started (I don't know C++ and refuse to learn it (PLEASE do not start a flame war about it, it's a personal choice))
So you wanted to start a programming collaboration you weren't going to be a part of?
So you wanted to start a programming collaboration you weren't going to be a part of?
I think he wanted to do a language he knew, and he obviously does not know cpp
Join the IRC chat, maybe we can at least get started tonight. irc://irc.gamesurge.net/fpcoders
I think he wanted to do a language he knew, and he obviously does not know cpp
Yep, I was hoping it would go towards another language.
The differences between C# and C++ shouldn't be scary to anyone who has experience with either.
The differences between C# and C++ shouldn't be scary to anyone who has experience with either.
He never said it would be hard. Just that he couldn't be bothered to even try.
My reply was general, I don't really care if the OP likes the language or not, I thought it'd be C# myself. Just saying for others who are scared of entering.
Learning popular languages won't hurt you, the more you know, the better.
Yep, like I said, this isn't the point of the discussion, I have my reasons. We now need to choose a project leader. I'd go for Jallen, but we need to see more of him on IRC :(
Project leader :aaa: From now on, if I'm not in a game I'll be on the IRC.
1 more vote for Jallen, I'm not actually going to contribute to the project (Got my own to do) but I'm sure he'll make a great project leader. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with this thread, good effort programming forum.
Yeah Jallen seems to be the best choice +1 vote I was thinking, for this project how about we allow custom sprites for the robots, restricted to 64x64 pixels. Another idea is that we incorporate one scripting language such as LUA or python to allow those who can't/don't want to learn c++ but can then still join in with the programming of the bots themselves. Another points to think about is that if people are going to code their bots ai in c++, how do we get the code into the game? Do we all submit our code and have it compiled in with the game or do we create a system/library where you code the bots externally and compile that side of the program yourself and pass the data between the main game and the ai program unique to each person?
Is this going to be 2d or 3d, I think Jallen said something about 3d.
i'll help if you assholes don't fuck around
i like this idea
I'll just vote for Jallen, but I dunno how much I get to do in this project.
I was thinking 3D, to begin with a very simple level like a big box which the robots run around in. I would chose Irrlicht to do 3D rendering and irrKlang to do sound. The only required input would be buttons and things to control the simulation, perhaps to pause it (not difficult to do with sprites, or we could use the irrlicht GUI system which is excellent), and maybe a spectator cam, both of which are doable using just irrlicht. I would use Lua as the scripting language used to control each robot. What do you guys think? 2D would be sort of easier, but not by very much. If we were to go 2D then I would chose SFML. What do you guys think? http://www.micropoll.com/akira/mpview/617747-179879
Be careful with those polls, like has been previously said, you can vote more than once. I voted 3D, I do agree that 2D would be a little too easy.
I voted 2d, on IRC now.
Let's give these a try. What if I vote for 3D Falling sand game and 2D :v:

If people were on IRC you'd know that we have new ideas.
Any good free IRC clients?
mIRC is good.
mIRC is shareware, isn't it? Runs for 30 days or something. atm I am using HIRC.
You can continue to run it after the 30 days. It stops working after around 2000 days.
