Was just about to start working on a larger 3D project, but I am not sure if I should participate in this instead, with a 2D game.

We (or I, at least :v:) used to be pretty lenient with that, taking the ~Ludum Dare approach~. S'long as the code is open to everyone before the start then you could use whatever you like, even if it's code you produced yourself.
