In response to the OP I find that different people learn differently. A book is a good idea if you want a good in-depth look at most of the basic C++ principles. An online tutorial will also work but some people find these to be harder to start off with.
The websites recommended to you at the start of this thread are excellent references and good tutorials. As for books I Find "Thinking in C++" by Bruce Eckel to be fascinating but it may be a bit too technical for a beginner.
If you're going to use Online Tutorials I suggest that once you have a rudimentary grasp of the basics that you try to build your own smalls programs and use the tutorials to guide you.
