10 years behind is a stretch.
VS is good for C#, but the competition isn't exactly bad.
Atleast for C++, I like Code::Blocks better than VS, it's cross platform, easy to put on portable media, and very light. Only thing it's missing is better intellifancyshit.
It's easy to set it to compile for C. I think the problem with the lack of documentation is they figure the kind of people who want to set it that way already know what they are doing.

If you had read the thread, you would have picked up that we know it has C compatibility mode.

The integrated debugger interface is also kinda crap, at least compared to Visual Studio's. But primarily the auto-complete is rubbish, but that's what they're currently working on anyway (last I heard).
I've nothing against the Microsoft IDE's, but I use Code::Blocks for my C++ work because I do most of my programming at school or in the library where VS isn't installed (and Code::Blocks can be easily put on a USB).
If VS were able to be used without installation, it'd be my IDE of choice.

Never tried SharpDevelop, but the other main competitor, MonoDevelop is awful compared to VS.

Never used SharpDevelop, but MonoDevelop isn't awful compared to VS.
It's pretty fast, auto-complete is nice. Debugger is nice. Refactoring tools are not as fully featured, but I hardly use those anyway. Project files are compatible across VS and MonoDevelop for the most part.
Never been a fan of them.
