He didn't do anything besides install SSH keys and give his input on some software we were working on until about the last month and we all agreed on the fact that nobody was going to be paid until then. So really it was only like $50 and it was more of a supplemental 'sorry for not paying you' kind of deal.

Come on now, I'm sure he did more than that.
Mostly small things. The last month or so he did a lot of work and we really appreciated it but still couldn't give a big paycheck, so that's why I gave him the $50 as a sort of token of appreciation. I really didn't want him to leave because he knew his shit, but it was his decision. I still gave him the choice of coming back when we could pay him a decent amount, but now he's not going to be able to.
