Honestly using a scripting language doesn't help you /that/ much, you're still limited to ~4000 characters which isn't really that many. I suppose that depending on the language you use you could get some more or less impressive out of it, but I really don't think it'd give you that much of an advantage over anyone using something else.
The hell is meant by a demo?
Are we supposed to make like a commercial game and then make a free demo, and make it under 4K?
I don't really understand what exactly we're supposed to be making for this...
Check out the Moleman 2 documentary for more information about the demoscene

if anyone hasn't seen it yet:

the single most amazing 4k demo
Damn, that sux I cant use javascript because I already made my game here: http://fit.faccat.br/~a1110207/goty_2014.html
:(
Am I the only one who thought you were supposed to make a demo with a 4K resolution (3840x2160)? :suicide:
Anyways, i might enter because I just learned the basics of Assembly during Computer Science last week..

Well if you already made it, it still wouldn't be within the rules anyway

It does help you a lot if you don't happen to already know x86 ASM and the win32/directx APIs.
Does anyone know why this is happening when linking with crinkler ? :
1>FUNCTIONS.OBJ : error LNK: Cannot find symbol '??2@YAPAXI@Z'
1>FUNCTIONS.OBJ : error LNK: Cannot find symbol '__libm_sse2_cos_precise'
1>FUNCTIONS.OBJ : error LNK: Cannot find symbol '__libm_sse2_sin_precise'
1>FUNCTIONS.OBJ : error LNK: Cannot find symbol '__libm_sse2_sin_precise'
1>FUNCTIONS.OBJ : error LNK: Cannot find symbol '__libm_sse2_cos_precise'
This happens as soon as I use a function from math.h

1. it's not a demo for a game, it's demoscene
2. you've already made it

Now I know what is a demoscene, I just made this "game" for fun, my friend is learning the basics about javascript so thats a demo for him.
I dont have enough knowledge to make a Demo like those Demos in 4k competitions.
Sorry if I offended anyone.
Title should of been "I got 4k problems but one byte ain't one."
Good luck for those of you that are entering.
I'm not at all great with programming but I'll throw my hat into the ring and hope to get out a usable product by the month's end.

I disagree.
"I got 4k problems but a bit ain't one" I think would work better.
Crowbarring "byte" in there is just bad style, in my opinion. :v:
Some progress :

Made using deprecated opengl though, currently deciding if I even care about that. I will probably not need much more then a few untextured cube's for my demo anyway. Hoping you guy's won't mind me posting this here, trying to get this topic to be active to motivate others so it won't end up like the last compo.
Why only 4096 bytes? Is there something special about that number?
Why only 4096 bytes? Is there something special about that number?
There are lots of other size limits for demoscene, 4k is just a popular one because it's a fairly low limit but it still allows for some really nice things.
Why only 4096 bytes? Is there something special about that number?
Back in the day, software cracks were released on floppy disks. Crack groups made intros that fit in the first block of a floppy disk; somewhere between 512 and 4096 bytes. This meant that on boot, the entire intro would be loaded in to RAM as soon as the disk was started. Demoscene split off from software cracking, but a size limit (usually 1k, 4k, or 64k) remains as a challenge.
Please, once everything is in; highlight it on OP so people can download..
So fucking annoying to scroll through 40 pages just to try a game.
I actually tried to do this a few weeks ago, and then gave up and forgot about the competition.
But I did make something. And I'm gonna post it before I forget again.
I introduce, for your viewing pleasure... 4kQUAD:

It's a rectangle. In OpenGL. It doesn't move, it doesn't do anything, and it probably won't run on YOUR computer. But it definitely runs on MY computer. Win32 4lyfe.
Download here for proof that I have the SKILLS to compile an EXE.
Maybe with 64k I could have made the rectangle move or something.
Oh, and in case you're wondering, yes, I am entering the competition. Shooting for third place out of three contestants.

Best game
insta win
That's almost as good as mine.
Mine's very meta, you see. Technically it draws a quad, but it's [del]broken[/del] invisible.
10/10, demo of the year, et cetera.
Oh man a demoscene competition, I hope I get my head around optimising projection and tracing before this contest ends.
My challenge is to use only vanilla Javascript.
Edit: maybe OpenGL too?

On windows UPX is commonly flagged as malware.

Only by somewhat overzealous scanners though. Most can just unpack it and check afterwards.
Competition Ends: 31st October 2013 (at the end of the day)

You need to turn in your demo by the end of 1st November 2013 at the latest. You can add bug fixes after your demo is complete, but only if the bug fix fixes a demo-breaking bug.
What exactly is the meaning of the second line? Is the "end of November 1st" thing just for the breaking bugfixes or do we get another day past the posted (31st) deadline?
(Yeah I'm really regretting spending the first two weeks of the month not working on this at all)

Basically, it's a grace period. You're supposed to turn it in by the end of tomorrow, but I don't want to disqualify anyone for turning in their entry a few hours late. Use it if you need it, but try not to need it.
