My work may not be worthy of posting here, but I will anyways. Currently messing around with java applets That blue square is the player, soon you will be able to move him from square to square, but first I need to try to get simple map loading up.
Have you used the Desura Linux client? It's fully functional. There's no stalling needed. Also, this isn't a quick and sudden thing. It's being planned and thought about. As for the encryption and security features, open sourcing it makes no difference. If you have good security, you have good security. If you don't, you don't. Security through obscurity doesn't exist.
The way in which the process of it being open sourced appears to be going is such that there will be no community standards on 1) Coding Standards 2) How community patches are handled, both at the copyright level, as well as the push to commit level 3) Documentation (if any) Additionally, what hosting, what standards? How will communication of a roadmap be given to the community? Desura has forums, but a mailing list, IRC, or github PM system can work as well. Security is extremely important for something such as an online store, especially since people are going to be storing (or sending) any kind of information that is important, such as passwords, or credit card information. Marking something as HTTPS doesn't automatically solve the problem and being completely blasé about it is just asking for trouble. And I'm most certainly not arguing in favor of security through obscurity. That's just stupid.

Somebody is asking for community opinion. Stop making assumptions about something that hasn't happened yet.
Marking something as HTTPS doesn't automatically solve the problem and being completely blasé about it is just asking for trouble.
Seriously, how would being open source affect its security? People would be able to find bugs that were already there regardless of it being open source? The Desura team being too dumb to notice security holes being added, but somehow are able to provide good security?
[vid]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4992578/yessir.webmvp8.webm[/vid] Decided to pick up this game again [editline]11th November 2011[/editline] Still don't know how to handle items though
DERP LET'S IGNORE THAT IT'S AN IDEA RIGHT NOW AND IT'S STILL BEING WORKED ON AND THAT NOT ALL INFORMATION IS FINALIZED
Let's not, and assume that they are going through with what they've stated. Otherwise we are unable to have a discussion on the subject in any way, shape, or form. Additionally it opens up more discussions on subjects that some folks don't care about. Such as security :v:
Seriously, how would being open source affect its security? People would be able to find bugs that were already there regardless of it being open source? The Desura team being too dumb to notice security holes being added, but somehow are able to provide good security?
It's less of a client side security issue and more of a server side security issue. They are only open sourcing the client, NOT the server. Any possible vulnerabilities that might exist on the server could exist by looking at how the client talks to the server. Just because a fix is put out to remove the ability to do something to the server from the client doesn't mean someone can't go back in the source code history and get the version that holds the ability to perform the vulnerability. It's sort of like how DropBox had the open source nautilus plugin but then there was the security issue where anyone can look at all the files you hold in DropBox regardless of whether it is marked as public or private. The reason they found the exploit was due to the nautilus plugin being open, as well as "catching" the calls sent from the dropbox client to the dropbox server. I'm not saying that it is going to happen, but something along these lines could occur with Desura if they don't pay attention to how they'll be open sourcing the client.
There are the same security risks keeping it open as there are keeping it closed.
I really don't get your point. Would opening the source code make it less secure than it is now? If it does, how? If it doesn't, why not open source it?
I really don't get your point. Would opening the source code make it less secure than it is now? If it does, how? If it doesn't, why not open source it?
Actually my argument is the one I posit within the Desura thread (which a few other people had stated). Specifically, turning Desura into a set of protocols and specifications, with all clients requiring the use of an OAuth token (or something similar. Logging into Desura with an OpenID would be pretty cool, especially if you used your Steam OpenID). I'm all for an open source client. My argument is they need to be a little more open on the backend, otherwise there is little to no trust with what happens behind the scenes, and for all I know there could be a monkey smashing a keyboard on their server backend once I hit "login".

For crying out loud. You're overcomplicating things. Also, software isn't based on something being 'pretty cool', it's based on reality. Desura could be the open source client, and a reference for other clients, much like CPython is a reference implementation of the Python language.

Personal opinions make the world what it is.
Shameless cross post from the Lua WAYWO Since I have no idea what one to put it in as it is a binary module AND some lua. Why not show it to you both!
Personal opinions make the world what it is.
That's just your opinion :v:
okay guys argument time is over, content time!
okay guys argument time is over, content time!
Where's your content? :(
Wasn't he working on a game or something a while back?
For the unaware, there's a game jam that just started called the "Bacon Game Jam" (guess what major site this contest originates from). The theme is "Flight". Teams are allowed. More details.
make sure you unmute [vid]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2116169/amaze.webm[/vid]
It looks okay up until the pieces join.
Alright now to write a entity system for the 15th time. I'm going to put it in a external library, any ideas for it?

Looks at the impressive stuff I'm doing after 2 months university.
[cpp]bool stateManager::run(void) { // Somewhere deep down inside, I feel bad for having this if statement. // Maybe it degrades the game's performance by 200% due to operator // overloading? Maybe I could've put a note 'DO NOT USE WITHOUT A STATE SET', // and allowed the program to SEGFAULT. But then my program wouldn't work 100% // of the time. I'd wake up in the night screaming, imaging endless bug // reports of tinkerers forgetting to set the state. Windows sending error // reports of my program to Microsoft, for them to know the crime I'd of // committed. // No. // Not on my watch. // So with all my might, I cast an if statement forged from uninitialized // memory itself, to protect my program from a case that will probably never // happen. if(currentState != nullptr) { return currentState->run(); } else { return false; } }[/cpp]

Got to some weird page when I attempted to do that 2-3 weeks back. Looked really interesting, reminds me of a similar thing a Facepuncher made. You had to write code for bots that could battle each other.
Yeah, been working fine. I only started 3 days ago though, so not sure how long it's been fixed for.

Thought that you guys might be interested in this: http://www.playstation.com/pss/closedbeta/index_e.html It's a closed beta app for a software framework made by Sony. [editline]11th November 2011[/editline] I'll give a few more details about it. It's somewhat similar to Microsoft's XNA. It uses C# and you'll be able to test it on Sony products and the PC. You can also submit your apps/games to the Playstation Suite (similar to the Xbox Indie Game's section). I am excited for it.
