Honestly, I found it much easier to just use my second account with the 20-30 friends I talk to most.

Nope, force closes on me.
I just tried a fresh Steam account and it's giving me a invalid username/password error again, both in the Android app and web app.
It's doing that to me too on the web app. I almost pooped my panties when it said my password was invalid :(

They don't offer windows servers which is what I need. It should be back up soon.

There is no need to rely on this for sending automated messages. Look at OpenSteamWorks.

I did something like what you want a long time ago
Maybe have the users that want updates enter their email, and you can email them. That seems like the most practical way for the users, and hopefully your server can handle it. I would assume it could, anyway.
I seem to be getting:
'pocketSteam is currently not responding' (before I've even got past the login screen)
On both my PC and Galaxy S II. Weirdly, earlier I was able to get past the user and pass and then it asked me for my Steam key to access from a new computer - then I just got the error again.
Is this because the server is becoming overloaded or something?

Plus, 64x64+ favicons aren't just something used by the iOS - you should probably stop calling them 'iOS icons' :P
Well when I bookmarked it on my iPod Touch to my springboard, it took a snapshot of the picture of the website and badly scaled it - a black screen with a small yellow box.
This is how it looks after I re-did the icon and replaced the file with iFile:
