You can learn HTML/CSS but you don't really learn design, you just pick it up once you begin noticing it in other sites/places and once you get more experience and practice trying different things out.

There's also the chance you just can't design for shit and no amount of skill will make you any better.

Please help me.
You were right, Jelly, frames and tables are evil...
Here's how you fix your problem.
Don't use frames.
I thought frames were abolished at the turn of the millennium?

Can you guys recommend me a good book for learning HTML/CSS? I know the basics of them, I'd just like something good for a reference and to help me make websites using good code practice etc.

Don't buy a book about it, it's much easier to learn online
My brother bought a few web design and html books a while ago and they're just full of filler shit and massive screenshots with very little decent content.
W3 schools is really good, but I found the best way to learn was just to make websites and practice because I think I learned better by encountering hurdles in real situations and having to get over them using online help etc. than trying to memorise things from a book

I heard W3 Schools was a bad place to learn from, as they have mistakes on their articles, do you know of any other websites to learn from? Thanks :smile:

Oh, I've never heard of any mistakes in their stuff
Like I said, I learned by just having to overcome problems, so for example if I wanted to know how to horizontally center a <div> on a page, I would search for that on google and figure it out

Learning online may be free, but because everything's often done by different people, it's very inconsistent. Make sure to stick to a tutorial if you do.
Hey guys, currently doing a web design course for Uni and this is my first foray into HTML and dreamweaver at all (compulsory course) so I've got a lot to learn in a very short space of time! Dreamweaver is compulsory.
I have an assignment due next week which I'm only starting now and should have started earlier, but the assignment is as follows - design a home page for a website about myself, advertising for a position as a children's show presenter. The website must contain the answers to 13 set questions about yourself, and home to 3 photos of you depicting 3 different emotions, and a 1 minute video. Apart from that there's no restrictions.
I've decided to do a nice, kidsy pastel colours design, probably based around some pale greens and blues. I toyed with the idea of a real metallic feel for the more 'tough guy' kind of image but decided to keep it simpler in the interest of time. Currently I'm thinking two columns and a header, column on the left facilitating text and column on the right containing images and video:
- I want to be able to have the videos and image thumbnails that, when clicked, open up the video centred on the screen with a black border around it, similar in a way to the facebook photo system but more elegant.
- I want to be able to have an illustrated background that does not move/get cut off when the user scrolls up and down the home page.
If anyone could give me some help it'd be much appreciated.
Hi guys. I just got started with Webs, and I still don't know how to upload custom software to it. What I have in mind is http://www.simplemachines.org, but I don't know how to get it onto my site. I asked their support, and they said that to upload files to your website, you had to go upload it to the File Manager. So yeah, this is my file manager:

And my site still looks the same. Does anyone here have any knowledge with Webs, and knows how to get this working?

God damnit, I asked their support and they said that you can't add it to your site. BULLSHIT.
There must be a way! :( Does anyone here use Webs and have a custom forum software of any sort??

I was just clarifying, wasn't taking the piss or anything :(
Anyway if you bought a domain name from anywhere you should be able to host the site anywhere, unless the domain name registrar is a bitch and says you have to host with them if you buy the name from them
question is, is Webs a registrar or do they just do the transaction via someone else?
Okay. Never mind, I found out. Took some time though, since it's not too easy to find out.

• it's called a lightbox, you will need to use javascript (I would recommend using a library like jQuery to make your life a whole heap easier)
• I believe you would do [css]background:#color url('path/to/image.jpg') fixed;[/css]
Okay. Never mind, I found out. Took some time though, since it's not too easy to find out.
In the future if you ever buy another domain buy it through a domain registrar and not the host, it avoids most problems such as them going bust and you having to recover your domain. Most people would probably recommend some of these:

http://www.namecheap.com/

I have a table in which one field has integer values. I need to fetch the largest one of those values, here's what I've tried:
$con = mysql_connect($hostname,$username,$password);
mysql_select_db('wc', $con);
$max = mysql_query('SELECT MAX( d8 ) FROM polls');
$date = mysql_fetch_array($max);
$d8 = $date['d8'];
echo $d8;
but it doesn't return anything, can anyone help?
thanks
How can i make a FB connect button on my site and then get the ID via php then do stuff?
The official tutorials makes no sense at all, and the other are too complicated.
got it working
