That doesn't make sense unless you say the full "hit the nail on the head" as the head is referring to the head of the nail. :)
It's like saying 'dunno' instead of 'I dunno' 'dunno' makes no sense on its own but the phrase is common enough for people to understand that it's being used :)
It's like saying 'dunno' instead of 'I dunno' 'dunno' makes no sense on its own but the phrase is common enough for people to understand that it's being used :)
That's a great example. I retract my previous comment - as long as everyone understands the phrase. I hate it when: - people say "generally" when they mean "genuinely" - people say "for all intensive purposes" when they mean "for all intents and purposes" - people say "I went over it with a fine tooth comb" when they mean "I went over it with a fine toothed comb" - WTF is a tooth comb
Actually, your last instance is also incorrectly stated, by yourself, funny enough. The saying, "I went over it with a fine tooth comb," is incorrect in type-interpretation alone, but audibly speaking, it's entirely correct, because what they're actually saying is, "I went over it with a fine-tooth comb." The differences here being: "fine tooth comb" - A set of words indicating a "tooth comb" (nonexistent entity) of fine quality "fine-tooth comb" - A set of words indicating a type of comb "fine toothed comb" - A set of words indicating one single descriptor of the said comb (fine-toothed is also acceptable) (See: http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/hyphens.asp) The last quote not to be confused with "a fine, toothed comb," which is also something different all together. :eng101: [editline]20th July 2011[/editline]
- people say "generally" when they mean "genuinely"
I've never heard this one, though.

The generally thing may be a UK only thing but have you never heard someone say "I generally thought that that dead guy was real" (obviously not with the dead guy - that would be weird).
Welcome to the [del]web development[/del] grammar subforum.
Great... Now garry is gonna create a new RC called "Grammar Rehab".
Imagemaps. Seriously VALVE what are you doing it's not 2002 anymore.
Imagemaps. Seriously VALVE what are you doing it's not 2002 anymore.
I know it's fun to point and laugh, but I think this is a legitimately good usage of maps. While rare in practical usage with good design, this appears to be pretty decently done. Is there an alternative I don't know of?

Still, imagemaps feel somewhat quirky and old and should never be used in designs that aren't heavily based on images (like the TF2 one)
hmm, not sure what else should go in the rhs...

hmm, not sure what else should go in the rhs...
Great start, I like the top bar in particular. With that said, there's quite a bit of inconsistent spacing going on around the main and sidebar areas of the design: Which looks kind of off to me. Try to make the padding on either side a little more consistent. I can see a very strong left alignment running down from the settings menu item all the way down to the avatar, so that will be broken in a sense if you correct the spacing:

Butt the container looks a little less awkward, but it may be worth it (and it lines up with the edge of Weld :v:)
hmm, not sure what else should go in the rhs...
Nice work. Your left hand column's visual tendency to look like an overall right alignment with children left aligned bothers me however. Though this could just be margin/padding inconsistency. http://clockler.com/ggbgbbg/ Toying around with the post style right now, thought I'd get some C&C on the coupon+foldover style. Yes/no/too gay? Edit: Or the footer or whatever else you might have thoughts for, I live to learn

Edit: Or the footer or whatever else you might have thoughts for, I live to learn
I'd say to increase the opticity of the read more button and to have either the full scissors or only half. Make the date darker and thus more visible. As for the footer, it looks nice but seems like all the content of it is centered so either spreading it out or adding something to the side. But over all its looking nice.

Are there any Rails-beasts around here? The guy who created AnyHubs is a beast, right? What's his nickname?
Are there any Rails-beasts around here? The guy who created AnyHubs is a beast, right? What's his nickname?
Turb. He comes on he with alternate spellings of Tangara.
Made some minor updates - lowered the opacity on the shadow of the date tags (actually, I redid them entirely, as I forgot to save the layered copy before. Forgot this time, too, but they're quite easy to make), and also changed the scissor graphic to a full-set and made them a tiny bit darker (#E2E2E2 down to #D5D5D5 or somewhere around there). I also redid the background to make it a teeny tiny bit lighter, but it's not flat noise now either - it's got a directional blur effect, much like how one would make a brushed metal effect, applied to make it like a smooth undulation. But the variance is so minor it almost looks flat.

Thinking perhaps I should revamp the footer a little. It feels so flat-color, techy, out of place with the semi-retro-coupon-posts thing. But then I'm a little disjointed myself, perhaps that could be the theme. Edit: See second screenshot above. Thinking not but it's a thought
Are there any Rails-beasts around here? The guy who created AnyHubs is a beast, right? What's his nickname?
Turb rolls with Ruby / Sinatra, not Rails.
Turb rolls with Ruby / Sinatra, not Rails.
rails is basically activerecord + fancy routing, although i've never actually used it

looks pretty cool, but I'd align the facebook, twitter, and rss buttons to the bottom bar like the text is unless there's an animation for them.

Thanks for pointing that out!
