I don't think it's the 'not getting stuff for free', rather I think it's the fact that captchas are the single greatest rage-inducer known to man and no single human being should be subjected to more than one or two a day, let alone several thousand.
And when there's the possibility of winning a hundred dollars worth of gear, I think most feel obligated to give it a serious shot.
