had to implement some fancy quadtrees and a even fancier tree search algorithm to make this
as efficient as it is.

a standard world is populated by around 50k objects and a few 1000 NPCs if I want to and it works
very smoothly
and as you can see a cute little bug, but that's already fixed
An improvement in the art is needed IMO though. Otherwise that's fantastic.

Hyperspace!
Wow it could have picked a better preview frame.
So OpenGL is going well...

Yeah, that's what I was looking for!

Don't worry, you'll have your mind in a clusterfuck of confusion for a few months, then suddenly it all comes to making sense in a few hours, at least that's what happened to me :v:
An aerospace simulator! Simulates flight through atmosphere. This specific batch of images relates to plasma that appears around spacecraft during re-entry. It's a shader based effect - the plasma mesh is generated on CPU, then the GPU makes the noisy scrolling flame thing, and blurs it out.

Holy shit that is awesome, any chance we can see it in motion?
It's on GitHub now (also I suck at using git :v:)
What's the "https" module?
I can't find it anywhere.
Holy shit that is awesome, any chance we can see it in motion?
Only the older version. The older version is a bit more laggy (it's volumetric), but uses the same approach:

Looks like LuaSec.
Looks like LuaSec.
Thanks, I also had to change it to require("ssl.https").
What is it written in?
Gml
Are you using a library for physics/collision detection, or did you write it yourself?
Everything written by me.
That looks awesome.
Also, that's a really nice color scheme
Thanks :)

Stunning. I've always been a big fan of space and this is very appealing to that interest, not to mention very inspiring. I'm half tempted to have a go at writing my own version now! :P
Microsoft sponsored my school for Global Game Jam 2012 and offered free Windows Phones to everyone who built a game for Windows Phone 7.
I made this in around 12-15 of the allowed 48 hours.

Nothing special, but making it was fun.

This is part of an aerospace simulator I'm writing. Right now it uses X-Plane flight simulator as an engine, but I'm thinking of moving to Outerra. At least if I can figure out what Outerra people are planning to do (some sort of an "everything" simulator..? I don't know...).
I had to extend X-Plane slightly (added atmospheric scattering, added clouds visible from space):

Also aerospace simulator. It simulates how temperature is distributed across your fuselage as you fly (it simulates heat flux from all the various heating processes, and also heat conduction through the hull and thermal protection):

(the strange bit with "different" temperature is the part of exposed aluminium. I do not simulate turbulent flow over missing TPS - that would cause heat flux to increase 10 times over that location. Without accounting for that the aluminium hole simply conducts all heat throughout the entire wing, like on this next pic):

And smoke rendering (procedural):

Also, end of January coming, someone could make a new OP.

So the long term plan is to land Facepunch on the moon. Right? Right?

Using genetic algorithms to design the best ship, yes
Oh god genetic algorithms
I never could get them to work, maybe I can try to do it again now...

Actually yeah, pretty much. I'm working on another project which should ease up development of internal systems for a spacecraft (or just an aircraft). Basically it lets you assemble a working spacecraft - virtually - and work with a complete spacecraft while you only have a small part of it ready (new parts can be tested with the virtual spacecraft using the hardware-in-loop approach: you wire up all sensors and actuators to the computer, which simulates the rest of the spacecraft).
there were rumors of a dev blog on the previous page, blackphoenix
you or anyone else mind sharing? this stuff is fascinating.
