base it on diaspora, make a social network around video
I would just like to point out to you that facebook didn't take on piczo or twitter, they are both services with different goals. and on top of that twitter came after facebook. If you come up with an idea that is social networking but not a facebook clone then you have a higher chance of success. Twitter works BECAUSE its different.
no, They were all social networking.
Make it first and then come up with a name.
call it work in progress
Think about it this way. If you can't even think of a name, it's going to fail.
call it SetForLife
I love how you think 50mil users will be easy to get and even if it'll set you for life. Most startups don't profit for their first few years, even if growth is massive (which yours won't be).
ITT: OP misuses the word niche repeatedly and has never heard of the network effect (A.K.A: Why you will never be able to spontaneously start your own social network)
This reminds me of the infamous "I want to make an MMO. Are there any good tutorials out there?"

If you're not innovative to think up a name and you only have a blueprint of the site you're not going to succeed. Show us a working version of the site, not just a "I haz great ideas but cant think of a name".
facepoop
Did say I was going to spontaneously be successful? no. Daft bastards, if you don't have a name for me, don't bother posting.
Hey, don't be calling us daft if you can't even figure out what to call your niche website. :colbert:
Did say I was going to spontaneously be successful? no. Daft bastards, if you don't have a name for me, don't bother posting.
Although you created this thread for asking about a name for your social network, a forum is to facilitate discussion. Therefore don't complain when it happens.
Did say I was going to spontaneously be successful? no. Daft bastards, if you don't have a name for me, don't bother posting.
How are you calling us daft? You're trying to make a social networking website to compete with facebook and set yourself up for life. That's about the worst time investment you could chose if you're trying to set yourself up to profit in the long term. You're calling your website niche and then saying you're going to attempt to compete with facebook (which is the exact opposite of niche by the way). It obvious you've put very little thought in to the start-up process for a project like this. The fact that you're even worrying about a name at this stage (and to me the verbiage in the OP says that you think a good name is a keystone for your project) it's a pretty good indicator that you don't know what you're doing. There are so many other things you need to be thinking about. Your target audience ("facebook's users" is not even a remotely refined target, and you're never going to get off the ground if you don't focus down a lot more than that), your marketing strategy, and your monetization strategy are all infinitely more important than what you're going to call your website. Truthfully without big investor backing of some sort you're never going to be able to push a social media website that hits an audience as wide as facebook. If you want to succeed in the social networking market you need to niche down (we're talking the real definition of niche here, not whatever you were using it to mean.)
As Google states, a niche is a recessed position or concavity. Very singular and pin-point rather than broad like facebook targets.
SocialNetworkSupreme [editline]20th October 2010[/editline] I want my cut.
ok people, If you dont have any faith in my idea, then STFU. I don't wanna hear your trollin' n flamin'. Leave this thread if you think my idea is a deemed failure. And be prooven wrong in the future. All I need is £8000 and I can set up my Indie game development office. The Property is cheap and in a fairly good location. Bollocks to all you nay sayers, people like you are the reason why the world is so fucked up nowadays. "I'll fink i wilz hav a go at dis person cuz they wanna aspire to somefink even tho I is a talentless fook" The websites are not my origional interests at heart, I am a Game developer. But I learnt PHP, HTML, CSS and in the process of learning AJAX so I can pay my way.
Putting AJAX next to PHP, HTML and CSS is silly.
SocialNetworkSupreme [editline]20th October 2010[/editline] I want my cut.
I have written a contract to people in my school that If they think of a name, and if theirs is choosen. The following happens: "If" and "only" when the website named "socialnetwork" has gained a "profit" of "$1,000,000" One Million United States Dollars (USD). Shall the respective provider of the trademark be "awarded" the sum of "$100,000" One Hundred Thousand United States Dollars (USD). "As long" as said Provider "is" and "remains" a legitimate member of "socialnetwork". That was written by my Law Teacher in school. [editline]21st October 2010[/editline]
Putting AJAX next to PHP, HTML and CSS is silly.
good for you :P
Ahahaha, "you" think you're "going" to make a "million" dollars. "Keep" dreamin.

Bollocks to all you nay sayers, people like you are the reason why the world is so fucked up nowadays.
Again, your priorities are completely misaligned. An office building is not the most important part of starting a game development company. Why do you need 8k to spend on an office when you have no source of revenue or any employees?
"I'll fink i wilz hav a go at dis person cuz they wanna aspire to somefink even tho I is a talentless fook"
I think the sentence you were looking for is "I can tell that this person has not thoroughly thought about what they are trying to do and I am going to provide criticism based on the years of experience that I have working in the industry"
The websites are not my origional interests at heart, I am a Game developer. If he needs 8,000 pounds why will he give the winner United States dollars? Edit:
thiers
:eng99:
Why are there "quotes" around every "other" word "?"
Because it's a TOA. [editline]21st October 2010[/editline]
If he needs 8,000 pounds why will he give the winner United States dollars?
because that is International Currency. OMG, you guys are really trying to look for an arguement. [editline]21st October 2010[/editline]
I think the sentence you were looking for is "I can tell that this person has not thoroughly thought about what they are trying to do and I am going to provide criticism based on the years of experience that I have working in the industry"
Don't get arsey with me. tell me your experience then, Am I supposed to know what you stand for. Like the rest of the big headed people that are around. I needed to buy the property for £8000 before the property prices sky rocket again. Obviously in different circumstances I would let it wait, but while it's cheap, its a top priority.
Don't get arsey with me. tell me your experience then, Am I supposed to know what you stand for. Like the rest of the big headed people that are around.
He's not being "arsey", he's being realistic because he understands what's going on. He has more experience in web development and general programming that you do and I think that you should take his opinion and experience into account when you make your decision because he's done similar before. Secondly, why buy property when you have nothing to show. We aren't "nay sayers" we're being realistic in your goals. You need to have a reason before you go and buy property and make a "game development" company. You need revenue before you buy property, I'll tell you that now.
Because it's a TOA.
That has absolutely nothing to do with putting quotes around random words. You have quotation marks around the word "is", I'm genuinely curious what the significance of that is.
Don't get arsey with me. tell me your experience then, Am I supposed to know what you stand for. Like the rest of the big headed people that are around.
If anyone's being arsey it's you, you're the one with your head so far up your arse that you can't hear criticism from people who actually know what they're talking about. I've been designing and developing for the web for almost 9 years now, professionally for almost 4. I'm a freelance designer/developer and I've worked as a contractor for a number of design firms in my city. I've even worked on a few projects for Microsoft.
I needed to buy the property for £8000 before the property prices sky rocket again. You realize how much more bang for your buck you would get spending 8 grand to contract an artist or a sound guy or on advertising?
In an atmosphere of pessimism, the brave keep going.

I unsubbed to this thread so good night people, whom I should be equiented but are to ignorant to realise that the world does not revolve around them. Give it 18 months. You'll see. Peace.
