I guess there's no reason at all that a lot of whysiwig website creators, e.g. Webs, use flash?
But I agree, AJAX would be better.
Why AJAX? It makes no sense, with AJAX you "communicate" with the server, you don't need that at all for a WYSIWYG editor.

You could use AJAX for to upload files
AJAX is also a bad choice for uploading files since natively it's impossible. It uses flash or an iframe in order to upload the file.
