no, it's cah-ret [editline]11th December 2010[/editline] where the a is pronounce downwards like in gnat
You silly Aussies and your cahrruts.
This is such a pointless thread. Arguing over (regionally dependant) pronunciation using text. If I pronounced char in the same way I pronounce character, it would sound like an Irish person saying car. More like the A sound in apple. It would be too stressed and would sound really weird. It would probably feel weird too. Read it like you see it.
character [editline]11th December 2010[/editline] On hindsight, I thought it'd be funny, spelling character the way people say they pronounce char. But it turns out, it is spelled like that.
But it turns out, it is spelled like that.
That's because 'char' is an abbreviation of 'character' the same way that 'int' is 'integer' and 'bool' is 'boolean'. Sure, it's use is not limited to characters, but it can be used to store ASCII characters. (C-style string = an array of chars)
theres only one way to pronounce it are you thick or something??
I just thought of something (not programming-related, but argument-related) How do you pronounce gibs (as in body bits in games) and how do you pronounce giblets (where the term originated)? I'm pretty sure gibs is usually pronounced with a g-sound giblets is pronounced with a j-sound
jib I like the cut of your jib, sir
I pronounce it as chair.
The later one. Mainly because I am a fantasy geek and I started shortening characters to char so I picked it up from that. My teacher says car though. Edit: Oh wow, didnt see it was such a dead thread. My bad.
this thread smells vaguely of nostalgia.

Surely nowhere near the front page of the programming forum?

Well now that someone bumped it I might as well say what I was going to. "care". As in the first syllable of the word "character".
Nobody chars [sp]sorry[/sp]
Charisma

So, all of you speak to you keyboards while programming?
So, all of you speak to you keyboards while programming?
Talking to other programmers. Yes, there are other programmers out there offline. Friends or co-workers
So, all of you speak to you keyboards while programming?
Yes. I also speak to the TV when watching football with friends.
"car" I can understand but I don't understand the logic behind "charr". Do you pronounce "character" as "charr-acter"? Do you also pronounce bool as "bowl" and double as "doo-ble"?

Though thoroughly random, all the way through. Its just tough. Ill go fill this trough over here.
I say car, but it really should be "care". That's how the syllable is pronounced in the word.
I say 'char', because if you try to say it like the syllable in 'character', it turns out wrong anyway. I don't say 'car-acter', or 'care-acter'. It's more like a 'kah' sound and if you did this with all of the variable and type names, using the original syllable, if you were reading out some code, it'd sound like you were having a fit. You're shortening the word 'character', not the sound of it.
I say it in a variety of ways, my good chaps. 1) Chair (I sat in the chair) 2) Care (Care Bears) 3) Cher (Sonny & Cher)
I pronounce it "čar".
