+1 for Internode if you've got the cash Otherwise +1 for Fanatical VPS (hint hint mention my name in the order form :>)
+1 for Internode if you've got the cash Otherwise +1 for Fanatical VPS (hint hint mention my name in the order form :>)
I will probably be going with them, and will probably be ordering either tomorrow or over the weekend. (Fanatical that is.)

# apt-get install vsftpd
Set anonymous_enable=NO, local_enable=YES, write_enable=YES in /etc/vsftpd.conf Remove root from /etc/ftpusers I see no problem (apart from the permissions nazis who hate root)
Do I need a separate user for ftp?
no, log in as root with your root password. and REMOVE root from /etc/ftpusers
Fanatical looks interesting, but is it worth getting it if I'm from Europe (It looks American)? I mean, it probably doesn't matter at all but I'm curious.
If you have that much (you said €30 to €40 per month), get a dedicated server from Interserver. Both vladh and I use them and they're fucking cheap as. 1GB/250GB/2TB, 100mbps connection
Yeah, they're pretty good. Really really cheap and performance is great. They do occasionally have downtime which is pretty annoying (this could be a mistake on my end but Charlie had the same for a while so I don't know) and you don't get a reboot panel but otherwise it's great for everything. Let me check my uptime ...
System uptime 52 days, 1 hours, 30 minutes
Yay
Package updates 6 package updates are available Warning - Your system is actually running CentOS Linux version 5.5.
lol shit brb
How easy is a dedicated server to setup? How quickly could I have the site running after I buy it?
Pretty quick, but I would really suggest you try and get some linux experience from elsewhere (like installing a relatively minimal distro on your home pc) so you can avoid a lot of headaches before getting a VPS/dedi.
Fanatical looks interesting, but is it worth getting it if I'm from Europe (It looks American)? I mean, it probably doesn't matter at all but I'm curious.
The VPS nodes are in Germany (Hetzner datacenter), the site is hosted in America. (so if Hetzner goes down, we're still here to provide support)
I also offer VPSes, some of the cheapest you'll find around for Xen. I offer both US and EU VPSes, but we're sold out in the US at the moment. US - Atlanta, GA: http://hexxeh.net/?p=282240018 EU - Frankfurt, Germany: http://hexxeh.net/?p=328117522
anyone have fanatical[vps] promo codes?
no, log in as root with your root password. and REMOVE root from /etc/ftpusers
I'm going to keep root in /etc/ftpusers for security reasons. It's just good practice to not use root.
anyone have fanatical[vps] promo codes?
"WHT" for 10% off the first month :)
anyone have fanatical[vps] promo codes?
They're piss cheap already and you want a promo code?
I have a VPS setup at http://beyondhosting.net, I'm running the linux GM server on it with an average ping of 15-17. The servers are in Chicago and I'm in Southern Ohio. If you're interested I have a Linux (Linux Binary's are rock stable so far) Gmod Dedicated running at 173.236.33.27. Servers using 198MB of ram at 8 players.
I'm going to keep root in /etc/ftpusers for security reasons. It's just good practice to not use root.
I prefer the convenience of being able to do anything over FTP than to have to upload something to my home folder, then SSH in and do whatever I need to do manually.
-;22270253']Damnit I'm SO close to re-starting server hosting, SO close.
Yeah but your fanatically far away bandwidth would make it laggy for any one in America or not close to the DC you use off shores. So if you want to offer Gmod Dedicated for German player it would be fine, provided you don't have an oversold node. http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=express&host=78.46.100.236 Played in the server last night for a few hours with a few of the members here and only had a segfault in srcds once. These binarys are going to be epic once released.
Well, I live in the UK normally, so EU servers are where it's at for me, always has been, although I'm in Canada for 6 months. Still very tempted just to setup a small build server...
I prefer the convenience of being able to do anything over FTP than to have to upload something to my home folder, then SSH in and do whatever I need to do manually.
I still wanna know how to get vsftpd to work without logging in as root.
I still wanna know how to get vsftpd to work without logging in as root.
Login as root. Setup new account. Add to ftpers. Remove root from ftpers. Login as new.
vsftpd lets you login as any user on the system who is not in /etc/ftpusers provided local_enable is on in the config
So what is the verdict on fanatical? I'm thinking of changing hosts this summer to something that has a little more space and bandwidth than my current setup
So what is the verdict on fanatical? I'm thinking of changing hosts this summer to something that has a little more space and bandwidth than my current setup
Everyone raves about it. Turb uses it, and apparently loves it.
Seems to be going nicely from current client testimonials :)
is there any way i can contact you and maybe test one out before i buy?
is there any way i can contact you and maybe test one out before i buy?
We don't really offer test VPS's, but there's a 7 day money back guarantee no-questions asked if you don't like it :) MSN: hello@fanaticalvps.com Email: nick@fanaticalvps.com Or just PM me here, or https://client.fanaticalvps.com/submitticket.php?step=2&deptid=5
ok i'll think about it, thanks!
FanaticalVPS looks fantastic, I might have to try it after my crappy webhost(s) run out :D
