Really? but with 3d you could set the camera to "snap to isometric view" couldn't you?
I suppose, yeah. But as thomasfn said, I wouldn't attempt to make the engine yourself, leaving you to focus on the actual game.
It's also worth mentioning that with an isometric game there are far more programmers and so on that will be able to help. A few people in this thread alone showed some interest but the 3D obviously threw them off a bit.
Going for 3d. even though it will be somewhat harder in certain aspects.
isometric would be harder for the user to understand in some respects. Certainly when it comes to cave systems, and other "below surface" details.
In an isometric view, you could probably disguise the fact that it is really 2d, and you could deal with caves in perhaps a similar way that dwarf fortress does?
well, I'm interested but still wouldn't participate due to lack of experience. it's not just the 3d part that threw me off.
There'd be other programmers too, and i find that being massively overambitious with your projects helps you learn :3
And to be honest, if he wanted expert professional programmers with masses of experience, he probably wouldn't have come to facepunch

The people here are at least competent in some regards. Such a game like garry's mod almost forces you to learn how to at the very least "make mods work". i use to have the game until my old computer basically exploded.
Yes Level of detail. Though my programmer knows how to do such most likely. i personally have no clue how to do such but for such a game like this it could be a important feature for optimization.
Yes, you can implement that for any image. Simple Bitmaps or gifs, also tiffs and jpegs, anything.

Im not saying anyone is incompetent, just that inexperience isnt necessarily a reason to not volunteer yourself for helping with a project. (quadruple negative?)
true, but I'm doing a massive overambitious project for myself. I don't want to slow other projects down because of my lack of experience.
You could work with someone more experienced? That way you'll still be in a proper group, but then there's little risk of you slowing things down

i find it funny that you are not deliberately insulting people, yet you are.
um? what do you mean sir snail?
if you mean i should have a website that has and supports all this information. That may be in the future for akio has in depth connections to a isp, and Seph has his own server already supporting 4 websites to pay for the server, and has alot more room to boot.
I mean I call making the website

Can you show me a example to the quality of your work?
if you do show me something promising i may see about giving you access to Jame's server.

I was really just wondering if I could. I usually don't finish what I start, and I don't like being counted on.
Side note, where can I get this iron mod of yours?
i find it funny that you are not deliberately insulting people, yet you are.
I see.. W/e, not really the point of discussion in this thread
The main problem with a game like this is that everyone loses interest and it dies, so the more people, the more likely it is to not go tits up?
If you aren't the programming guy then why are you making the calls on what technology to use?
If you aren't the programming guy then why are you making the calls on what technology to use?
im not. The decisions right now are loose decisions already discussed with my programmer.

if you don't finish what you start don't waste my time. The people i have considered for this project almost always finish what they start.
The iron mod cannot be found on CCAN because i am not registered. i believe the only legal way to have a mod for clonk because of some weird licensing is through CCAN, as i have not found any clonk mods any where else.
i am curious why soo many lurk on this topic of discussion that somewhat frequently come yet never speak. Ive never seen another forum that has people whom do such on these kinds of discussions.
in other news. i am getting in contact with my main programmer this weekend, upon discussing with him i shall complete my design document.

That was kinda saying I didn't want too.

probably because these people don't give a shit about your project
I know I do.

Because, no one really cares.
Too many projects have been posted on facepunch, like yours, and have never taken off.
And don't think your different because you've already found some people to help you. You aren't. People have had great programmers and artists work with them on a project, but they still crash and burn.
Also, next time you post something like this, have a design document ready for us to read and post it. Don't worry about people stealing your idea, its the execution, not the idea that counts.
That was kinda saying I didn't want too.
Sense is easier to make than cents. Please try to make sense.
probably because these people don't give a shit about your project
I know I do.
i am confused about what you said. Many people don't give a shit about my project. Yet you do?
Or is it that you like the rest of the people don't give a shit about my project. considering you haven't posted anything safe for this one post i think it's the latter. Please confirm with me what you intend.

in every single development section in any forum there is bound to be people who post projects that go no where. Facepunch is not special. it is often miscommunication, loss of connectivity, and overall bordum that kills projects as i know this from being with mod teams. i don't expect that because i have found people that i am better then any of the other projects that have fallen. if anything i am exactly the same, safe for one thing i haven't given up in the efforts i am putting forth. Though for this reason it may be a while before i update this thread again.
In 2 weeks this project will be abandoned.

Thank you Mr. negativity we haven't spoken in a while. Hows the wife Mrs. agony and the kids Torment and Pain?
I'd say he was being quite positive actually

I never said Facepunch was special. And you haven't given up efforts yet. Most likely you will. Most people do. I know I've abandoned tons of projects. Also, i don't expect that because i have found people that i am better then any of the other projects that have fallen. I don't understand that sentence, clarify?

The fact of me finding people does not change whether i am better off, or not.
Update: Alot of things has come up , i am setting up a company and thusly are busy. Who knows when this thread will be updated, but if it is it will update with a vengeance!

Ok, but what's your motivation for this project? You said your programmer wasn't doing anything, this is because of lack of motivation. You aren't paying him, and he has other things to do then be your pet programmer doing everything for you.
