Your problem (or not, it looks cool) is that when you are multiplying whatever heightmap value you have, its exceeding 255, so "spilling over" and creating those hard edges (same for going off the bottom).
Try finding your minimum and maximum values for your heightmap, then minus the minimum and divide by the maximum, then times by 255. That should work :D

I think that this is an issue with some random number generators. I found a similar "looping" effect when I made a random paths program.

This was from rand() % 4 + 1 in C++ where each number represents either up down left or right.
It would eventually get stuck in this loop no matter what the seed and repeatedly trace this shape.
