...although some quick Photoshop work won't kill anybody! Darkened the gradient, moved the pictures down 16 pixels. Also sorry for the blue, I turned off the picture layer so I could look at the gradient better and forgot to turn it on again. Edit: where did my automerge go

Yeah, looks better than the other one. Anyways, I'm gonna get working on the ship upgrading menu when I get some free time again. Anyone that has ideas on how to organize it? The "items" that can be upgraded will be: 1) Ship's Gun (double-shot, triple-shot etc) 2) Ship's Engine (makes you move faster) 3) Special Attack (launch a missile, etc?) 4) Shield (every upgrade makes your shield last longer) Anything else that would be cool to have?
Hull upgrades? Better looking ships as you progress
Hull upgrades? Better looking ships as you progress
My idea was that you could buy new ships, I just didn't list it because it isn't really "upgrading your ship" as it is just getting a new one. If by hull you mean like different shapes and colors for the ship, that is. [editline]16th March 2011[/editline] What the heck? I just noticed I broke the background in the level selection menu! (compare the screenshots with the yellow frame and the latest one) I'll fix that when I get back home since I'm heading off to school to have my test right now. But wow, I gotta be blind to not notice something like that.
I meant newer, better looking ships. So basically yes, buying new ships. For other upgrades. Maybe something like an afterburner.
I meant newer, better looking ships. So basically yes, buying new ships. For other upgrades. Maybe something like an afterburner.
My idea was limiting each parts for the 1st ship to 5 upgrades, 2nd ship goes up to 10 upgrades, 3rd goes to 15 upgrades etc, so buying new ships is actually needed to have more powerful things, not just for looks.
4) Shield (every upgrade makes your shield last longer)
Uhm... Wouldn't 1-hit kills make more sense in a danmaku game...? If you ask me (something you don't, but still), you should be able to buy 1-ups instead, but that can quickly get unbalanced... Dewd, I don't know, but I'd still say stick to 1-hit kills and extra lives

My idea on "death" would be have a limited amount of times you can die without having to completely re-start the level, then the Game Over would just make you do the level from the beginning. But the amount of tries is something I can't really think of right now, because buying 1-UPs would be pretty useless, you would have a better chance of survival if you just buy a better gun or something like that...

Well, the idea of having "You can die this many times before restarting the level (I say restart the GAME instead though, but that's only because I'm a sadist when it comes to video games) is not that bad, but how you implement that into the games upgrade thingie is what matters. I would have it so that bosses drop permanent 1-up things on death, to make 'em even more rewarding
It would be awesome if you threw a Futurama reference for the difficulty settings. Scooty Puff Jr. - Super Easy Scooty Puff Sr. - Super Hard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Why_of_Fry All about that episode, and it'd be pretty damn funny, in my opinion. haha.
Hey guys. Took long, but my tests are finally over. I spent the last few minutes trying to come up with the design for the upgrade menu and I think I finally have a decent idea. I'll be making a ruff sketch on PS when I get back from school (in about 6h). Anyways: @Zondac: That's a cool idea. Let's assume each world has 2 bosses: the mid-world and final-world bosses. On Hard only the final boss would drop a 1-UP, and on medium and easy all the bosses would drop one. @Funcoot: I was thinking of Beginner, Normal, Medium and Hard for the difficulty settings, but maybe adding "Extra Easy" and "Extra Hard" would be nice? Like Touhou's Lunatic mode, but with an inverse too. Edit: And for when you've already beaten the game, there could be a "Custom" setting, where you choose the number of bullets, how much damage ships take, how many lifes you have etc.
