Don't, buy the 5$ unlimited everything hosting from xenonservers.com, they are extremely reliable, and i have had my website with them for over a year and 1/2 now and its got 100% uptime, except when they lost power like 1 time and it was down for about 5mins
If you don't mind, use my referrer link http://www.xenonservers.com/clients/aff.php?aff=287
You just want people to use your refferal link.
Xenonservers is dead, don't even bother going with them.
They have no support staff what so ever and brocks even sold or attempted to sell the company off to some unknown buyer.
And even before that their service was terrible, the few good people from the old support team got out fast.

My host uses DirectAdmin. I'm not sure if that's because it's better or just cheaper. (it's not free, I just wanted to say)

It's cheaper by a long way, but also often considered better (lower resource usage, more features once you get used to it, etc).
justhost.com my sites are hosted with them and they're awesome, reliable and have very good customer service.

Ah, just talked with their live chat. Seems good but I despise the robotic template-answers they give.

I use http://www.vidahost.com for clients that don't sort their own hosting out, and for my personal hosting. They're organised, established and their support is knowledgeable and top notch.

Get a VPS with buyvm.net instead for $15 a year... they're legit.

I got a VPS from BuyVM.net. They're great although, all superstitions aside, node thirteen is cursed.
My friend omkar has a VPS with www.unichost.com and he is very happy with the service and the quality of the VPS. After all its the service that matters the most. Cheap stuff don't last for long.

Get out
In any VPS what matters is the Server Hardware that is used along with the virtualization platform. That gives you the best outcome at all hours.
I've used 3 different hosting services in the course of 10 or so years.
http://www.dreamhost.com/
Has been the very best, the uptime is reliable, and the customer service is superb.
I really can't stress enough on how needed great customer service is. When you need help, or something goes wrong, and you've got clients depending on you, you need that help FAST.
*EDIT*
They do not use cPanel. But I have used cPanel, and Dreamhost's pannel is far superior. I believe it's their own making.
If you're looking for shared hosting, I used http://www.bluehost.com/ before I started using VPS services. I thought they were very good, never recall having downtime or anything like that and their customer service was excellent. Haven't used them for a few years though.
Hexxeh has some new pricing on his VPSes, check it out http://billing.hexxeh.net/cart.php

I've heard really good things about Lithium. I also really like SliceHost.
