It's running on a VirtualBox VM, and I resized the disk because it was getting a little cramped. Almost everything reports the disk /dev/sda2 to have the size of 4.7GB, when in fact it contains almost 16GB. How can I fix this?

Sounds like you resized hte disk, but not the partition. Something like GParted will fix it, and there's command line tools for it as well.
