ICT in the UK has basically just been a course on how to be a receptionist >_<
You mean a course that teacher you everything a receptionist SHOULD know? "My computer froze, how do I solve this?" - receptionists
I am planning to do a *good* re-design of my personal site (for the billionth time). Should I just do a one-column blog with an about page? That's kind of all I need really (apart from pages that I can directly link to).
I like the simplicity of a one-column style, but they can look really bland if you aren't careful. If it's exactly what you need, then definitely make a mock up and see how it looks

I think it may be default jekyll though.

I say give it a go :)
You mean a course that teacher you everything a receptionist SHOULD know? "My computer froze, how do I solve this?" - receptionists
Yeah, more like the only thing receptionists know is the basic steps for using the computer as they need to use it, anything else is no-man's land. Some of the jobs I sent my CV to the person handling the emails didn't know how to open pdfs, so I had to convert to doc (not docx, doc), and the CV doesn't convert well, looks like shit in doc but what can I do?
I'm thinking of doing something like this. I think it may be default jekyll though.
It's the default theme because Tom Preston-Werner wrote Jekyll (along with many other contributors since).
Well first time posting in Web WAYWO, don't go too harsh :v: I've been working on a site for my ICT course. It's inspired by metro and heavily utilises JS for navigation so will display a warning message if you have it off. I think I'm gonna use it for an actual site since I like it so much. What do you guys think? http://ict.mattjeanes.com/
ok font choice for the nav, but I'm not a fan of the generic sans serif and <li> in your paragraphs you've got a weird (albeit common) design conflict going on here -- gradients or flat: pick one, not both you have a really good start though
I'm soon done! I'm quite happy with the loooks of it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y92OihU7dg&feature=youtu.be AJAX everywhere though

It keeps saying "loading" with a bar movement animation. Maybe my internet connection is a bit slow O_o
Is it supposed to display when i visit the website in a browser? It keeps saying "loading" with a bar movement animation. Maybe my internet connection is a bit slow O_o
No, it's trying to load the data, but since you have no GMod to supply the functions with parameters, it just keeps on loading.
It's the default theme because Tom Preston-Werner wrote Jekyll (along with many other contributors since).
Precisely, which is why I'm going to have to change it.
Might not be the most faithfull simulation of Windows 3.1 but it comes a long way for my RP server... Made with PHP/CSS/HTML and MySQL
if you are going to do that, you should use a bitmap font and disable font smoothing and the images should be 256 colors etc etc
if you are going to do that, you should use a bitmap font and disable font smoothing and the images should be 256 colors etc etc
Or just get screenshots of the actual OS and design from that
ok font choice for the nav, but I'm not a fan of the generic sans serif and <li> in your paragraphs you've got a weird (albeit common) design conflict going on here -- gradients or flat: pick one, not both you have a really good start though
Gradients and flat elements are definitely not mutually exclusive. You can use both. The weirdness on that page is not because of the combination of those styles, it's because of the general inconsistency in the design. The elements look like they all came from different places, instead of looking like they are a unit, and that's the real issue.
I'm using Windows SMTP service on our server, but i can only get it to send internal emails to addresses on the same domain, anyway to get it to send to stuff at gmail and others? [editline]8th May 2014[/editline] Not really a web development question per say, im just using SMTP to mail out registration emails
I would use something like http://mandrill.com/ or http://sendgrid.com
I made a thing http://isthelondonundergroundonstrike.co.uk/
Heh. [editline]12th May 2014[/editline]
In secondary school the ICT classes are complete shit, as Hickley said you basically learn to become a receptionist. My college however has Computing and BTEC ICT (I'm doing both). Computing is learning programming in vb.net while BTEC ICT is a range of units. There's a bullshit unit to do with personal development, then you "build" a computer (basically plug in the hard drive/gpu/dvd drive), then you make a website according to a client brief - which is what I just did. We're supposed to use dreamweaver which is alright but I just did it by hand as I prefer that - though my friends teacher forced him to use dreamweaver so yeah. In short, secondary school is shit, college is better but still not great
I do Computing at my college. It's actually not that much to do programming whatsoever. We're forced to use VB.NET and we just made basic programs with selection, validation statements and stuff. Aside from the main 'exam' which you get given a lump of code (This year we got given a card game) that's broken seven ways to Sunday and you have to fix it in the exam time to different questions, its mainly theory. Binary, main principles of common computer hardware (RFID/Scanners/Printers), types of software, really really basic HTML/CSS, basics of the Internet (TCP/IP, DNS, Sockets/Ports) etc. The exam board really love Telnet. It's all there if you're really interested http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/A-level_Computing/AQA I'm doing it for second year as well. We have to make a sort-of real life solution in VB.NET. I asked if I could use C# but apparently the exam board have banned it/don't support it anymore because 'Universities want to teach it their way'. My teacher was going to switch to C# but he couldn't because of the exam board. Sucks. Meh, VB is a bitch but at least it's easy.
I know, I'm just laughing at the 'They could strike any second now' in the source.
It's actually a tooltip. You don't need to view the source to see it.
Haven't done any serious php development before and thought I'd learn by doing. Here's my first web app, LitAnalyst. It allows students to paste their essays and view a summary including their wordcount, vocabulary and complexity score. Registered users can also view a history of their uploaded essays to see whether or not they have improved. http://www.vgen.tv/landing/index.html is this decent looking? It's sort of like an FAQ for my site really didn't actually do anything other than modify a default bootstrap page but i think it fits the style of the main site.

Also the "Facebook" icon on the main website looks odd. Move up the "F"
