How does data collection from forms work on websites? I'm going to be putting a few forms on a website to collect information, but I'm not sure whether it would save it to an existing database or save it in a text file. I'm currently working on the form page now, but I have no experience doing the back-end stuff with this. I think I'm going to need to learn PHP/Javascript or something.
Most common is probably using PHP and databases to store sensitive information. [editline]3rd September 2014[/editline] Also, not trying to be rude but there is no reason at all to post the same question in both megathreads. In fact, the other thread you posted this question is is meant for questions. So just leave it there?
Nearly finished with the project now: http://rbmedia.se/gfx/avesina/ What do you guys think? I am presenting it to them in an hour to see if they have some inputs on improvements/changes.
On button hover, no underline and change the background to a darker shade.
How do you guys feel about doing a webdev/design contest again? If there is some interest I have a fairly simple idea that could work great in a contest.
I'd like like to join if I find enough time for it. Probably only going to be a PS template though
making it a small one that doesnt take too long to create sounds nice
made my first web crawler woo
Cool I'll create a thread as soon as I'm home. Actually going to wait with posting it, I have quite some work left and I don't want to hurry it.
Remember kids, always do your research before getting a service. And do backups as much as you can. I have these two VPS (well, in reality it's 3 or 4, but that's not relevant). One in RamNode, with awesome service, and nice prices. Got the ~100Mb ram 50GB bandwidth package, because it was affordable (remember that the other vps and the domains add quite a chunk to the final yearly price). Then, on a cyber-Monday deal I found this sweet deal with 2GB ram and 2TB of bandwidth on ChicagoVPS. Red flag. However, innocent me thought "well, I guess they are just doing a nice offer to attract more clients. They got on LowEndBox, so it can't be a scam...". Oh, silly me. The service I was hosting on the first one started giving problems of bandwidth (got it suspended once, as the service I provided started getting users and users). So I thought "hey, why don't we put this >50GB thing, on the 2TB server, so it doesn't give me problems?" "nice idea, Coment! It will never fill it! Nothing will go wrong!!" So I did that. It even started going faster since it was closer. Awesome! So what do I find today in my inbox? "Service suspended - Network abuse". What. I open a support ticket for clarification, and they tell me that it was sending lots of packets, so 'it was making their network unstable'. I replied that, before buying the VPS, they told me filesharing was accepted (which is my biggest concern, to avoid trouble later down the line). I guess they didn't imagine these levels of -sharing. Considering that their 'fix' is to format and reinstall the OS, I guess they didn't save any kind of backup (you know, in case there was an accident or something) of the box before taking the measure. Last backup is 10 days old, which means a loss of 15 user-generated content folders. Not a happy day. Plus, this gets me on a position where I might have to stop that project (the biggest one yet), since RN can't cut it (at least without bleeding more money into them, which is not a feasible option considering I have no steady income and nobody ever donates) and Chicago can't handle it. Not really showing off anything, but web related, so I guess it counts.

However, they told me that they won't charge you for using more than the bandwidth shown for the package, and won't until they push out an official notification.

For those who only check waywo. I opened up the contest thread.
Afaik I won't be billed for ober usage of bandwidth until I get notified by them.
Seems kinda short-sighted to not think about bandwidth fees yet
im working on a new website for now, i got this.. i need a break http://dgs.square7.ch Oh and for my hobbies corner, a inventory system http://gamerpaddy.bplaced.net/partz0r/
Seems kinda short-sighted to not think about bandwidth fees yet
Well I don't use the bandwidth and they told me they will let me know as soon as they start charging for over bandwidth.
Seems kinda short-sighted to not think about bandwidth fees yet
Overthinking things that are unlikely to be an issue any time soon is just as bad as being short sighted. If you're at a point where you're using all of your bandwidth and you can't afford to pay for more, you're doing something wrong.
I open a support ticket for clarification, and they tell me that it was sending lots of packets, so 'it was making their network unstable'.
From what you've said it sounds like you might have been compromised by a botnet that's been bruteforcing ssh en-mass hard recently. Did you have SSH keys set up with password auth disabled? Just mentioning as from what you've said I can't see how that what you were doing could possibly cause a network issue. Highly recommended if not. We're blocking ~45,000 attempts/24 hours to our customers at Afterburst.

The support guy escalated the issue, and the next guy actually offered to reactivate the service while leaving me a backup (seems like I was in the wrong) inside the vps. When it activates, I'll be able to restore the missing files on the new hosting (in DigitalOcean too, seems like they're known for these kind of services, wish I knew about them sooner).
I didn't have SSH keys set up, so that might be the case.
FTFY. Key auth is many, many times more secure than password auth. I'd recommend using it (and disabling password auth) on your new VPS.
i know chrome's new font rendering is an improvement, but it looks so weird. it took me ages to put my finger on why everything looks so crisp.
i know chrome's new font rendering is an improvement, but it looks so weird. it took me ages to put my finger on why everything looks so crisp.
I have to say, it helps a lot in many places, but I prefer the old rendering for some sites (Facepunch especially)
I have to say, it helps a lot in many places, but I prefer the old rendering for some sites (Facepunch especially)
It hugely depends on the font the site uses, sometimes its great, other times it looks like absolute ass. But at least it's not like apple's idea of font rendering which at one stage was to just... bold everything?
Working on a 'Snapchat' inspired Pastebin. I know some services provide the same sort of thing hidden in advanced options but this is sort of a 'does one thing and does it well'. I don't know if I'll ever release this but it works pretty well. [vid]http://a.pomf.se/czfcol.webm[/vid] Upped' to GitHub. https://github.com/benbristow/SnapPaste
More work on my video sync tool, been lazy with it and not had much time to work on it but managed to improve quite a bit of the backend. I was stupid and sent base64 over the network instead of the raw binary, so sending it raw reduces the image size. Still having a few issues with frame drops, but I'm slowly working on it. I decided to avoid using a generic play/pause bar as: a) i'm shit at interface design b) i'm lazy c) the first mockup looked bad. So I'm going real simple with it. I'll probably make it so you can drag across the video player to scan through it to a timestamp. [vid]http://up.nlan.org/SSnAw.mp4[/vid] low framerate is because i don't have the best GPU for screen cap, streaming a video, and also playing it back. http://nlan.org/netvid/
mods.tf Thoughts?

(I pretty much gave up on the program anyway) Glad I could inspire someone else atleast, so thats always cool.
mods.tf Thoughts?
Came across this a few weeks ago, it's pretty nice. Needs a search/filter system after you're done with beta, probably should go where the beta div sits
Came across this a few weeks ago, it's pretty nice. I had one, but it turned out to be completely broken for some reason. I got some time now... I'll work on it.
I'm currently working on the REST API documentation for the service I'm working on and I was wondering if the way I'm doing it is any good. I still have to make the part where the parameters for the methods are shown and a "playground" where you can test the api using a simple user interface.
