So, I have a question for all!
What do you do, before starting a new design? Do you just mock some stuff up in photoshop or just draw a base layout?
Or do you just go jump head deep and start the code?
Just wondering how others go about starting their thought process.
Sometimes I have a design in my head, sometimes I don't. I rarely make sketches because I'm a terrible artist and I don't have any photo editing software.
Having a design in mind makes it loads easier to make the website though. I'm actually currently ready to get cracking on a website but I don't have a layout in mind so I can't start yet :(.
usually I try to make a mock up in illustrator, get frustrated, and just skip straight to making the website
although I did make a mockup for my portfolio

How can I add more 'wow-factor' to this??? I think the header has good wow-factor but the rest is a bit bland :(
I made this for a bit of fun (hue hue gmod).

I just go straight head first into the shit and get things done. I usually don't know what a site should look like, but eventually I'll begin to have some inspiration and ideas, and it'll work out in one way or another.
Additionally, my girlfriend likes to work with design (web design in particular), so if I get stuck, I ask her to open firefox and test shit out.

0/10, Gjøvik University College isn't there.
Seriously though, the site has A LOT of text when you scroll a bit down. I'm not too sure where I'd put that, but should remove some of it or rather have it hidden until the user open it. Because that's too much information at once. The "What is this" is probably the most important one, so don't hide that one.
And the header is cool with the angel and stuff, but it leaves some awkward space to the right.
I know this wasn't too useful, but though I'd share something :/

Some spelling errors. I know, but facepunch won't let me edit posts again...
Going on what you said with 'awkward' spacing, this looks slightly odd too.
[img_thumb]http://puu.sh/bCKmK/e9e4f7c42d.png[/img_thumb]
The left and the right don't marry up. The right has three sections evenly spaced, but on the left it has 2, then the third is all the way at the bottom.
Edit: Sorry, forgot to thumbnail it.
Also, looking at the code, it's your first `col-md-4` that's messing up that section.

When you scroll down at the bottom it's easy to start zooming in on the map instead. I also feel it's too wide (for desktop use at least)

You may want to go easy on the inclusion of resources. On my desktop, hooked up to a 60Mbit connection with LAN cables, the loading time with no cache of the site (in Firefox on AMD64 Linux) takes about 12 seconds.
About 2-3.5 seconds of that is spent fetching json data, and between 8.5-9.5 seconds is spent on the background image.
Thanks for the feedback guys, really useful stuff! I'll get to work
I was actually considering making a website similar, I own the domain, just need to find something to do with it.

My first AngularJS site!
Really pleased with how it worked out. The content in places is a little off, so excuse that.
Thoughts?

Does anyone know of any hosts that ignore takedown requests? Domain name hosts, too.
Also, what kind of precautions do I need to take so that hosting a site won't lead back to me at all?
I don't want to do anything illegal; a game company has decided to go about shutting cool sites down that relate to their game. One is open source and I'd like to see garner information upon the feasibility of bringing it back up and while ignoring further takedown requests.
Cheers.

I'm fairly sure that hosts in Russia do not really give a damn about DMCA takedowns...
To make nothing trace to you:
- Use whois protection
- Use Cloudflare as a reverse proxy
- Do not expose the server's IP to public
- Do not allow remote connections to be made from your server ("Upload avatar from URL", allows people to enter their own website, see which IP the connection is coming from and have your server's IP)
- For mail, use an external SMTP server that does have a "Originating from" IP (otherwise you will be flagged as a spammer) but the Originating From IP should be of the SMTP server, not your mail client (Mandrill is free up to 12k emails, so, I suggest using that), and use an external mail inbox.
That's all I can recommend, really.
What if they tell cloudflare that you are doing shit

Well there are multiple ways to remain "Fully anonymous", but CloudFlare is mainly for keeping your IP private. That's mainly to tackle people attacking your website, but I'm not sure if CloudFlare handles DMCAs by taking your website offline or by forwarding them to your host.

They forward your host details if the DMCA is legit
They forward your host details if the DMCA is legit
Ah well, then the worst that could happen is DDoS, but I doubt a legitimate company would want to be involved with that. So, worst that can happen is your website being hit offline. Former USSR countries usually don't really care about DMCA / Cease and Desist letters, so they won't give your details to anyone.
Trying to improve at HTML, CSS and JQuery.
Could somebody give me some feedback on the look of my site so far.
I'm working on the about section at the moment and I don't know how to make it look better. What could I do to improve the look etc?
Thanks for any feedback boys

It's bad to put your navigation at the bottom, for user experience. People read your website in an F shape, so it is important that the things that matter, such as the navigation, is somewhere the user is likely to look. You don't want people having to look for the menu, or not even notice there is one.
I'm not really fond of your color scheme and I think white on black is hard to read (for main text, that is). Try moving the navigation into the bar that says AOH, and change the big black block with white text to look more... readable.

Cloudflare will attempt to contact you first. If that fails, they will contact your host. If that fails, I believe they send the host's information to the person who submitted the DMCA.
Now that I think about it they might not contact you, but only notify you that one has been submitted.
Cloudflare will never take your site offline since Cloudflare doesn't actually host any of the content. It's really not their problem.

That is not true. Cloudflare caches your website, so even if your website is taken down, it is possible that Cloudflare still has copies of your files (some of them at least). If you have an Cloudflare account, it'll actually show you the bandwidth it saved you, so they must store items on their servers.
Either way, if Cloudflare takes your account with them down, and give your information to the person who filed a DMCA, big deal, if you have a host that doesn't care about DMCA complaints then there's really nothing people can do other than attacking the server by bruteforcing passwords or DDoSing it.
Then I imagine they would just purge the cache/disable those services on that domain. They will never just throw you off their network because of a DMCA. They're a DNS provider first, a CDN next.

Maybe, ah well, time will tell I suppose? :')
A DMCA request is only valid if the material in question is hosted in the US or on a US based domain anyway.
If you have something hosted in say, Europe and it has a domain which is European for example a DMCA request holds no legal ground and you are perfectly within your rights to ignore it. However if they then send a generic copyright takedown request and supply valid proof and sources with it, you'll have to follow whatever copyright laws that the country or union where the content is hosted from. In the case of European countries, it would fall under the EU Electronic Commerce Directive however its no where near as straight forward as a DMCA notice and again, they will have to reference the directive for their takedown notice to actually hold any ground.
A simple "I found x on your site and it violates my y because I made it" wont be enough to legally get you to take it down.

Yeah, but a DMCA is usually the "nice" way to tell you to take copyrighted shit down. If you shoot it down because it doesn't apply, chances are they're going to do it the harsh way (sue you).
I don't know if there's any kind of "you MUST ask first or it's not valid" law in EU, but even if there is, the cost of lawyers and time might not be the trouble.

If someone tries to sue me, they can sue me all they like but I'm quite sure that unless the case is extremely important the Netherlands will not hand me over to the US to attend court :v: They'll have to come to the Netherlands to sue me I'm quite sure.
