Why do chrome have AA text in OS X, but not on Windows?
Getting your fonts to look nice on Windows is usually pretty difficult, it's unfortunate that there really isn't a good way to force some sort of smoothing standard or anything.
just get mactype or gdipp
Why do chrome have AA text in OS X, but not on Windows?
Lazy people everywhere...
Those programs fuck up so many pieces of software it isn't funny.
I tried gdipp a while back, and I couldn't read a thing on Steam.
Why do chrome have AA text in OS X, but not on Windows?
because os x has incredibly nice built in font smoothing. chrome takes over whatever font renderer your OS uses. so under windows, it looks like utter shite. firefox uses its own font renderer, hence why text in firefox is usually very nice
And why doesn't chrome do that? It slower the load time?
And why doesn't chrome do that? It slower the load time?
Because the developers are fat
Just have to add: It is AA when the font get big enough, so it is kinda implemented. Any drawback to make it on small fonts too? and ya, the AA isn't exactly pretty with the current chrome version.
I just bought a MacBook Pro - happy with purchase so far. Anyone have any tips on some software that could be useful for development? I grabbed TextMate 2 for editing and I'm happy with it so far. Grabbed SourceTree by Atlassian for Bitbucket too (which I use for my projects), anything else you guys think would be useful?
Note, I'm no designer so designer software etc is not really necessary, I just program PHP and some Ruby, sometimes Lua, so...

Check out Transmit for all your FTP related needs, the GitHub app if you use GitHub often enough, and Sequel Pro for a nice visual mysql client

Sublime Text is also cool with some tweaking, Paparazzi! is cool for taking screenshots of websites. Skitch was also a nice app to take screenshots but they completely ruined it with the latest update, so I don't think there's a way you could get the old version unless you had it before and didn't update (which fortunately I did).

Oh and install Homebrew for command line stuff.
Thanks - going to install Sequel and try the other things out. Don't really use FTP much after I automated Git to deploy to my server, so... Thanks, though!
And Magicprefs if you want to add more actions/behaviors to your Magic Mouse or trackpad. I use it to add middle (wheel) click to my Magic Mouse and middle click to the trackpad when clicked with 4 fingers (sounds nasty but it's great).

I just use a simple old USB mouse for now, I much prefer it, at least for now. I'll probably get some Apple peripheral for that later, but for now I'm happy with this old mouse that looks like it's seen better days.

They put a link back to a 1.* version of skitch on their website after everybody complained
Also, how do you choose your fonts? And where? ( That's something I always wanted to know, if you don't mind sharing your working process. )
I usually look for fonts on Google Web Fonts because they're Free and most of them look very nice. I usually choose based on the "mood" I'm trying to achieve, but I don't apply it more thought than that. I usually try a few combinations before settling for one I really like. I also tend to develop passions for some typefaces and I currently really like PT Sans, so I use it almost everywhere as a typeface for copy.
Decided that I have had enough working at the agency I am currently at. Only got a year professional experience but have decided that I would rather work a dead end job and slowly build up my free lance and knowledge on the side, just ordered the business cards and trying to get my old job back (the one I left to go to the agency). How many of you guys are freelance and got any tips to get me going?

You might want to build a portfolio Website if you don't have one already.

Currently working on it, it's a bit tricky as I'm more of a developer than a designer but practice makes perfect

You don't need to be an amazing desiner to make an amazing website. Less is usually more.

That's kind of what I am counting on with this one, gonna be quite a while before I get any work in I expect so really polishing up as much as I can while I sort out everything (1 month notice, looking for some clients and that kind of thing).

Biggest tip I can give is that as a freelancer you need to realize that you are now an entrepreneur and a business person and a marketing person now and not just a designer/developer like you were before. Start soaking up business and marketing knowledge as soon as you can.
Second biggest tip I can give: Network like your life depends on it (it does). Being a successful freelancer is 50% what you can do and 50% who you know.
A client of mine wants me to do copy-pasta of an layout of a very popular site, I did it, now he wants "the same side of space" with "the same buttons".
I want to punch him in the face.

Fire him.
Fire him.
Nah, i need money. After the "contract" of 6 months I will do that and punch him in the face with my old desktop.
Working on a new background. The idea is to have different background for different types of pages. Minecraft background on the Minecraft server page, TF2 bg on TF2 server page (if that's ever gonna happen), maybe some custom artwork on pages such as home and about, etc.
This is a TF2 screenshot to test the effect I want to apply on all screenshots because I don't have a nice MC ss yet. CC on the effect?
