Looks like that whole windows 8ish look is like the new 'web 4.0' so many places seem to be following the style of Microsoft and going for flat colours and simple text / logos / symbols.
Is it nice?
In some cases I think so, in others I don't think it looks too great. I guess its like any other design trend, you have the people who use the principals correctly and make it work and the bandwagon jumpers that murder it.
I am suprised at its sheer gain in popularity the whole new generation MS style has had though, I mean of all people to spark a design revolution its Microsoft?.
At least YouTube didn't make it even shitter than it was before this time.

Try making the content area wider. Also it seems to look like it's too far to the right if you ask me.
You're right - it is too far to the right. I'm trying to keep it a fixed size - so that content will be predictably layer out - so the content area is 900px wide. I could stretch that a bit more with the sidebar space gone.

I assume it's still wip? Because that search bar is terrible. Als might I suggest using icons next to/instead of every link/button. I think it would look much better.
Good luck with that garry :3

I'd give the nav bars a little bit more vertical padding and use the non-bold version of that font for all the text up there.
I think the menu bar should be visible without the need to scroll up.
Come on Garry. This is the web dev subforum. Step it up.
Also try out some different fonts. This one just doesn't work for the style you're trying to go with if you ask me.

Or at least give a hint that you can scroll up for the menu.
Also, I can't scroll up unless I've scrolled down first (on Firefox 17.0.1).

Don't kid yourself, Microsoft isn't responsible. It's been around since the 1950s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Typographic_Style
You can't doubt they don't have some pull in the industry. Who brought it into modern light?

Microsoft has played a part in it, but it never started it and it's annoying to see people give them all the credit. Here's an article from 2008 that predicted the resurgence http://badassideas.com/the-evolution-of-the-international-typographic-style-from-print-to-web/
Prediction and actually doing something are two different things, dude.

Did you seriously not look at that link? Designers have been doing it for ages.

I'm thinking of using the theme's blue instead of the green :/
Regardless of its origins or who has been using it, Microsoft was the main driving force behind pushing that type of design back out there and influencing designers again, I don't doubt that Microsoft are not the first to do it, but by pushing that form of graphic design out across all its major platforms and all its websites and all its advertising media it has influenced a new revolution of an older style.
What are your favorite CSS templates? I have used bootstrap before but all of my sites are using the same exact theme (and I want to try something else). Foundation looks horrible in Internet Explorer 7/8.

So style them? The point of CSS frameworks is to give you a jumping off point, not to be used to style your whole site for you out of the box..
I found this editor for windows & mac, http://brackets.io it looks fairly nice, here's a video showing it off a bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=HZkrlX7jJcg#! it's coded in html, css & javascript.

I'm not creative or artistic at all, otherwise I would. My issue is moreso finding a template that works across all browsers, something I've only found bootstrap capable of doing.

Creativity can be learned and nurtured just like the skill that you need to develop. I think it's a cop out when people say "I'm not creative" or "I'm not artistic".

Right now I'm working with redis for the first time and building a collaborative-filtering based recommendation system for a project I'm working on. Redis is sexy.
So I made a Dark YouTube theme:

I'd really appreciate the feedback...I spent over 5 hours today working on it, fine tweaking everything.
If you're interested in downloading it, get it from UserStyles here:
http://userstyles.org/styles/79643/youtube-hitchhiker-2013-dark-centered
It doesn't work properly in Chrome, unfortunately. I'm bad at cross-browser compatibility :v:
I found it funny the new theme is called Hitchhiker, just seems to fit with the ugly ass left-aligned theme so well.
