I am shit at French, I gave it up at the start of Year 9 and started focusing on German. I'm doing that website as homework/practice. Sir wanted us to make a single-slide powerpoint on it. So I asked if I could make a website.
Now keep in mind, at the moment I'm Year 9, and the Year 11 GCSE's look like what you would expect, literally a website from 1998. And we use dreamweaver. For the game making course we will use AS2. That website took me about 3-4 hours total to make, I refine things a lot.
It takes one of the GCSE students an entire course to make a website from 1998 with ~StArFiElD GiFs~ .

The problem with making the rows two units tall would be that then they'd be too tall...

Using Silk icons really takes away quality from your otherwise quite good design, you should consider trying another set.

grayscale or low saturation fugue icons which turn to full colour on hover might work nicely
I really don't see the point of switching to an icon set that looks so similar to Silk, just because they're a little overused.

What do you make your wireframes with? Photoshop?
navbars do generally look alike though, so it isn't really that big of a deal
