"real time. well... it's java... script... so it's not gonna be as real time as a lot of the other things that are out there!"
this guy is actually funny as fuck
his stereotypical nerd mouth kept me distracted from how stupid everything he said was

Please let me know if you can tell the difference in the characteristics of these two drop-down menus (one of them is something that the other isn't):

Try to give an answer, then feel free to read the spoiler.
[sp]The top one is a drop-down with editable content, the bottom one only allows selection strictly from the drop-down entries.[/sp]
I wouldn't have guessed to be completely honest, I think the top one needs to look more textboxy/indented

Maybe I'm wrong but I just saw a video about how V8 "compiles?" the JS code into ASM. (I forget exactly what the guy in the video said)

Someone in the YouTube comments agrees with me.

Thinking about it, there's not really a point into making it a drop-down. Since the user will have the ability to write whatever they want into it, it can just show a popup with auto-complete suggestions.

Yeah that wopuld be even better, ditching the drop down arrow will make it instantly distinguishable.
Surely hovering over it and having the cursor change/clicking on it would be enough to point that out though

I'm not sure it's a good idea to redesign the front page of a company I'm going to work as an intern at before they even know me, but I did it anyway.

(this took me about 1 hour)
Nothing wrong with the current one, I dare say it's better.

Are the ratings because it's unneeded or because it's actually bad/worse? If so, in what? Help me understand to improve, please.

I'd say worse, the clouds don't fit in they seem to be "forced" as in they're there because they can be, not because they should be.

Both. Your version looks like you've sucked the life out of it. The Voze design is rocking too btw.

I'm afraid to say it's a little of column A and a little of column B, It really has to blow the current front page away if you intend to show them it as an example of your abilities and I don't think its quite there yet. lets just say you have other (far better) work you could show them.
As far as CC goes on what you have made I think the current transparent content background is a little weird and it might look better with just a solid colour or at least some more definition.
I also think you shouldn't stick to the template they already have, If you wan't to show them they should take you on as an intern you will be far better off showing them that you can think of something different and bring a new perspective to their existing front page.
It might be a good idea to write down all the notable features of their existing design and try and avoid reproducing them, by this I don't mean not including a nav bar because they have one, I just mean think of a different way you could integrate it.
The most likely place you could impress them is by doing something with the feature box but building it in a way that they could actually use with little to no effort.
The kind of thing that will show you are capable of working outside of work hours (and willing) as well as able to delivery usable content.
I'm sorry if this sounds overly condescending or anything I just tried to be as clear and to the point as I could.

Thanks, that's good.

I think the problem is that I just wanted to make something that looked interesting and overlooked the fact that I needed to innovate on what's currently there for it to actually be good.

Torrent music file parser. Uses the new HTML5 FileReader API, reads the torrent file, bencode decodes it, parses the filenames, checks common music patterns, uses the Last.fm API to retrieve missing info and album art. Works on about 90% of music torrents, the other 10% are people using really dumb and inconsistent formatting patterns.

I made one of these a while ago but swap out the filereader api with ruby, I gave up at magnet URIs though. which seems to be where the torrent community is heading to.

Magnet links would be a bitch to implement, you'd have to contact the swarm and request a file list. I hadn't even thought about magnet links, not even going to try.
Porbably a silly question but what do you guys use to make graphics?
Like the buttons and headers for your sites.

Photoshop or GIMP.
Hey guys, not posted on this thread before. I'm hoping you could help me.
I've set myself a little project for the summer to create a website, it'll probably contain game reviews, gameplay videos, articles on my thoughts on various things happening in games or the industry, etc.
I've never really done any programming before but I want to start learning a few languages so I want to try and create the whole website myself as a learning process, With html or javascript I'm not sure which though.
Could I get a few basic tips on getting myself started? Any programs I need, possibly tutorials/guides/books, how to best choose a webhost and things like that.
I'm pretty decent with computers, graphics and design but I've never made a website apart from through those WYSIWYG editors. I know it's probably a massive task to set myself but I'm willing to push myself and think it will be a fun project.

-Sublime Text Editor, or Notepad++ (Notepad++ is free, but Sublime is better imo)
-Also, in order to have a good mantainable blog, you will need a Content Management System (eg: Wordpress).
-Also, I'd stay away from WYSIWYG editors just because I've had problems with them accurately showing the end product.
-HTML and JS are two different things, JS is mainly used by web developers to add interactivity, while HTML is more the layout, and CSS being the design.
For a webhost I would go with http://lithiumhosting.com/ they have really affordable hosting, and for the domain I'd go with http://www.name.com/ or http://www.namecheap.com/
Also, check out some of the threads in Web Dev. because there are some good resources in them (Like this: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1040942)
Just if you haven't been overloaded yet, I want you to know that this would be pretty hard for a total beginner, so maybe you should look into Wordpress and make yourself a template.

How exactly do I install Wordpress, do I need a webhost first?

CSS?
Wow, just how do you actually just set up a simple but good looking graphical button.
I've tried it but gave up, and did some buttons with other programs and imported it.

Once you've learnt how to make them once it becomes a lot easier to style them, and because they're made purely in CSS you can manipulate them a lot easier and not have to worry about creating a number of different images of different sizes.
