I'm talking about vBulletin straight out of the box. vBulletin went downhill after version 3.8.
I understand your opinion though Mystlight.
SMF is pretty badass, tons of custom mods. MyBB is alright as well, but I have more experience with SMF.
In my opinion, Invision Power Board is better than Xenforo and Vbulletin. (I've used all three and found I like IPB the best)
That's just me, though. Experiment and find out what you like the best, everyone seems to be different.
SMF isn't that bad...
SMF is nice, although the plugin system is AWFUL (direct source code editing - insane). PHPBB is bloatware, MyBB always feels like 'every other forum'.
BBPress is nice, Vanilla is my favorite though. BOTH very easy to customise the design of, and both I would recommend.
