For a second there I thought I was in the gay chat thread

I'm really sorry :(
I hope you still love me... 'cause I love you.
Guys, please.
...how many people would actually figure out it's licensed under the GPL?...
You kinda have to make people agree to the GPL before they can use your software so anyone in a figuring frame of mind might notice the giant GNU PUBLIC LICENSE header as it scrolls past. :v:

There aren't many people looking at what they actually Accept, and there are even less people who know what the "GNU PUBLIC LICENSE" is. Not to mention people who care about what it is.

Tricking people isn't the way to go about selling your product.
What about how id Software is doing it?
And another example of a new game sold as open source. The Castle Doctrine is open source and being sold.

id Software way of doing things? You mean open sourcing it when the next generation is out? I'd much prefer to have it open source on day one and paying for the assets.
You kinda have to make people agree to the GPL before they can use your software
This is false.
This is false.
Indeed, the GPL is a software license, not an EULA.

This game looks pretty sweet, you mind going over what libraries you are using? and how your doing the lighting?

Then that's their problem, isn't it? Why would you go to further extents than "normal" software does to tell them that it's open source?
This is false.
Isn't it in the terms of the GPL that you have to make the user aware that they're using GPL software?
Isn't it in the terms of the GPL that you have to make the user aware that they're using GPL software?
Shouldn't a license.txt distributed with the software be enough?
Shouldn't a license.txt distributed with the software be enough?
Depends entirely on how it's distributed. Doing it via a standalone installer for instance would leave you with little opportunity (other than displaying it) of making the user aware that the file exists.
Isn't it in the terms of the GPL that you have to make the user aware that they're using GPL software?
The license has to be distributed with the software, it doesn't need to have a big flashing light that says "GPL!"
[editline]25th March 2013[/editline]
For example (not GPL, but the point is the same)

I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you, but it's made in gamemaker. The lighting just uses the built in surfaces system, some primitives and blend mode trickery. I'm using fmod for the audio currently, but I haven't really taken full advantage of that yet (mostly because I don't know if I'll be able to raise the cash for the license).
I was originally using C# and XNA, but there were a few things I couldn't do particularly well (and then whole being deprecated thing) so I took all the assets and re-did it :v:
i'd only think it's problematic once someone starts selling your software, since gpl allows you to do that
Is anyone else at GDC? I'm going to all of the Indie Dev talks today and tomorrow, but I'm really interested in meeting up/collaborating/learning with other indies.
Just finished a guitar tuner for Android with a friend.
Was for a college project
It's our first Android app and were pretty happy with it.
Anybody want to give feedback?
Isn't it in the terms of the GPL that you have to make the user aware that they're using GPL software?
No. It's nice to have it in an about box, but users can use your software *and* disagree with the GPL or CC-BY-SA. They're strictly copyright licenses which deal with GIVING users rights back that copyright takes by default.
Since my last app, RadNor, is almost ready to release (it just needs an icon, don't know where I'll get that, since I suck at drawing), I've started work on my next app, which I've chosen to call "Wake Me There" (Might change this later on), which is simply an alarm that uses GPS/Location data instead of the time. It's something I've been kinda missing, since I commute about two hours everyday, and I have to get up early to catch the bus, and I'm afraid I'll miss my stop if I fall asleep.

The drawing in the middle there is an early draft of the icon.

A clock face that just has N / S / E / W rather than the hours.
I feel like we need a math thread.
Good idea?

Were did the last one go? I know we had a physics thread, a chemistry thread and a math thread in GD a while back.
