See despite that, I actually find designing for clients harder. There's sometimes a level of ambiguity surrounding what the client wants (I've had a client ask me for a grungy style, and once I showed them a mockup, they turn around and send me some links to what they want, which are all very modern/minimal.. A lot of the time, the designer is responsible for clarifying with the client, but I usually take grungy to mean grungy so..).
When I'm designing something for myself, I know what fonts, colours, etc. I would like to use. A lot of the time, I second guess my decisions when working on a client job, or have doubts about the way I'm going about things. Admittedly much of this is more superficial than goals based though.
Having said that, I do believe that creativity thrives in a situation with constraints, and the problem solving necessary to devise a solution based on those constraints. Having the freedom to do whatever you want when designing a personal site, and having nobody to answer to, could definitely make it harder for some.
Would have to agree with you on that. I don't do much in regards to website design, but when it comes to designing / building websites for people, unless they have a very clear idea of what they want the easiest thing to do is just ask them to show you examples of similar sites to what they have in mind.

I like the simplicity!
Just found out today that I need a design ready by sunday for my school project. I've literally had one html and one css lecture and all they explained was h1 { font-familly: Cambria }... FUCK.

How's this for a first real attempt at a webpage?

I'm one of those people who'll work on side projects, but completely neglect a personal site.
[editline]17th September 2011[/editline]
Content would be http://fp.deadworks.me, it's a Facepunch mobile "webapp". I have a more feature-rich version that is at 80% completion, but as work was halted on the API, work has halted on that as well.
Why are the background stripes seemingly randomly spaced?
Because they are:

What do you suggest?
What do you suggest?
smooth gradients with maybe spectrum of colours
then make the content divs of the site 0.9 opacity (id use a 90% opaque image background for compatability)
i dunno thats just what i thought of looking at your site

The text seriously hurts my eyes. The font is too thin, the text is too light and the background is too dark.

My concept for my college project
One of the requirements was keep it simple and keep to the colors the website of the college uses.

Considering the text is the main area of focus, you should really work on making it work.
Increase the font size, increase the line height.
You can learn a lot from this page:

The text isn't the main focus actually, we just had to sent in a concept for the design so I threw some text on it. The main focus will be the code as the purpose is to learn php not html.

Nothing great, never intend on making it anything more than it already is.

I like it, not a great fan of music on websites but yours is pretty calming so it's not too bad.

Well I wanted some kind of instrumental or ambient music to go along with it, it would be pretty dull without. I also didn't really want to be sued, so didn't get anything fairly mainstream.
personally I hate all music on websites that I haven't asked for (ie: grooveshark, youtube, etc), I have my own music playing for the majority of the time that I'm on the computer and I don't think a web designer should try to enforce their music taste upon the reader. If there is music you want someone to listen to I think you should have a play button, and it's up to the user if they want to listen to it.

If you rely on music to make your website less dull you're doing it wrong.

I changed it so you manually have to press play, thanks for the idea.

It's dull because it's plain, it's plain because I want it to be.

Imagemap, that's what that site is mostly created from, but that whole site is mostly written in PHP to gather information from my MySQL database. Nothing fancy but when I get off of work ill create some sleek templates or something that wont rape your eyes from behind your head. Agreed? Agreed. :)
