SRCDS isn't multi-threaded so you should aim on a high clockrate CPU rather than low clockrate and lots of cores. That is if you want your customers to have very high performance on their servers.
EDIT:
E3-1230v2 would be a great choice!
Thanks for the tip, and processor recommendation!
We'd probably go with the E3-1270v2 instead of the 1230.
Performance is obviously a must, so thanks again for the tip. :)

Are we cheap, or are they just expensive?
Rant + Game Server
I just wanted to get something off my back. Some people on these forums have been reacting rather poorly to DRS, and the services that we provide. Some believe I'm nothing more than a sour PR agent, working for a company that's out to rule the world, or something.
Honestly, that comment about me personally really struck a nerve. DeRoyalServers exists solely as a service for others, not as a giant corporate entity with low operating standards, willing to screw over a consumer every chance they'd get.
Hosting is a passion of mine, and will forever be a part of me. I do this because I love websites, and I love providing a service for others. The money that I make off of DeRoyalServers will simply help ensure that I can properly maintain the network, and expand when needed. I'm not going to go out and buy a private jet, and I'm not a corporate mastermind. I'm a real person, and I love what I do.
If someone here has a problem with my interests, or thinks I'm nothing more than a sour PR agent with no life and a dozen hidden agendas, simply don't host with DRS. It's as simple as that. Don't host, don't comment, don't rate. Just leave DRS alone, and go elsewhere for your services.
I try to present myself as being a professional, yet also add my own personal touch, or witty remarks to lighten the mood. However, some things are just too much, and I tend to get personally offended whenever someone on here makes a rude or negative comment in my direction.
Specifically regarding my public relations attitude. Honestly, I'm going to try and make my services look good. I'm not going to say something like "Oh, whatever. Yeah, you can host here, and yes it's fast, but all networks let you host, and most of them are fast as well". I mean, that is technically true, as most hosting providers out there offer a fairly decent service that is reliable, fast and generally inexpensive. Hell, we all use similar dedicated servers, operating out of similar datacenters with similar port speeds. Nearly every large host out there uses Linux and cPanel. Almost every host is identical in terms of tech, speed and reliability.
So honestly, if you saw a web host saying "we're the same as everyone else" would you consider hosting there?
It's all about the general experience that the host can provide. To create the image that a single host is better than another.
I have a couple of websites hosted under DRS myself, so a slow network would affect me personally. You could say that it is my duty to ensure that everything's working as it should, even though saying that would make you look rather corny.
Making DRS look good is something that is very important to me. I don't want to come off as a babbling idiot with a server at a datacenter. That's not how one should do business. (even though I'm pretty sure I look like a babbling idiot right now, and just ruined any professional credibility I may have had prior to this post)
Now that I've ended my little rant, I kind of have to recall the statement I made earlier about the launch of our game servers. To be honest, I don't think DRS is currently capable of maintaining a reliable game server hosting network, at least not at this point in time.
The current dedicated servers that we have wouldn't be entirely suitable for hosting game servers, as pointed out by Svenskunganka. (thanks for the tip)
So, we're going to stick with our two website hosting services for now. It's what we're good at, and we've had absolutely no complaints since we launched the platform over a year ago.
Sorry for the rant. I really don't want to be compared to a sour PR agent. Honestly, that comment really hurt. I just want to provide a service that other people may find valuable, or helpful. That's it.
- Ty.
I don't know how people can possibly think you're here to be the next Bill Gates. You're one of the most transparent here, and it's not like shared hosting hasn't been done before and you're gonna make bank just because you learned how to do it too.
People are just silly sometimes, you got to let it slide once in a while.
Some people here just simply don't like the fact that you're bringing them a service which might be useful.

No, we just know what we like. Good servers.

Have you used DRS?
Have you used DRS?
That isn't my point.
That isn't my point.
Well it kind of is. You posted about you are looking for good servers? So you're saying DRS is bad but you haven't used them....
Sorry I'm not following your thought process.

This. You can't say they provide a bad service without trying them first. I'm yet to hear anything bad related to their hosting.

By "good" I mean reputable, trustworthy and well known. Like Linode, DigitalOcean and others.
By "good" I mean reputable, trustworthy and well known. Like Linode, DigitalOcean and others.
I don't see anything that shows DRS are untrustworthy or unreputable. In what way does a huge company mean it is trustworthy like Linode or DigitalOcean like you said?
Ah, the old 'bigger is better' myth comes back to haunt me.
edit: deleted insult to a certain large web hosting company with a 1 and a 1 in their name.
Hi, just wanted to say that I have ordered and paid for a web host + domain registration. You guys seem to be the cheapest out there and provide more per dollar. Thanks!

Just ordered a web plan for my new domain. This'll be fun.

Good thing you didn't put "with decent up time" in that list, because quite frankly listing Linode and DigitalOcean right after the other like that shows how much you don't put much thought into your provider choices.
Which isn't all too surprising, considering how little it takes for you to shit on a service you never tried...

I wouldn't choose to go with them after watching this thread since the start, also after seeing this thread it appears people have the same thoughts as me.
Using Facepunch to show updates of what's happening to your service is not a very professional idea, it is not here to be used as a blog, which he is basically using it as. As well as if there are external customers not from here, it's not greatly helpful for them.
I'm sure they are a great host, and wish him/them success in the future, but by the way he posts here as well as on Twitter, I wouldn't choose to host with him.

Well I sure hope you go send this same message in the threads for ReThinkVPS, RamNode, and Fanatical VPS. it's a shame that people don't like a company owner to be a real person, that tries to talk with it's members (where it advertises) in an understandable way. He he may act like this is a blog by providing members of his services, that are from this forum, with updates on his thread that he advertised his services in, but what else is the point of a thread? Is he just supposed to make it and walk away? What's so bad about him telling people updates? It's not hurting you in anyway.
that's my small rant for the day.

I never said it was 'hurting' me in any way, I just stated my reasons for not going with them. A thread like this is for advertising services and then getting feedback, no other host uses it as this, and as such I have been with both Afterburst and RamNode.
As said, I am just stating why, not really sure why you have to have a 'rant' about it, it's also not hurting you that I'm not going with them.
I tried going to simplified host. Firefox warned me about it being an unsafe connection.
Glad I choose DRS.
I tried going to simplified host. Firefox warned me about it being an unsafe connection.
According to Peter, they didn't have the proper finances to maintain the SimplifiedHost network.
The unsecure connection warning was caused by an outdated SSL certificate.
If you go directly to http://simplifiedhost.com/ you'll see a fairly basic page that states it is under construction. (the links provided on his thread lead to an https connection, hence the warning)

SimplifiedHost is currently under construction at the moment.
Hi there. Didn't know whether to put this in a PM, but I need to find a host for my site, I go through roughly 3TB/m at the moment, but it keeps going up, could hit 10TB in a couple of months. I need about 1TB of disk space. Any chance of you hosting it?

That depends on what type of website you host, and if it violates our terms of service.
Additionally, you are not allowed to host any websites found on this list.
If your website abides by the above terms, then yes. We will host you on our network.
However, because of how large your website is, we may have to set up a custom server that properly meets your resource needs. (the default server uses a mid-range processor, and given the size of your website, a high-end processor would be required)
We also will not transfer websites to our network of that size, so you will be solely responsible for the transfer and maintenance of your website.
If you'd still like to transfer to us, please reply back.
Edit: If your website abides by our above listed terms of service, please send me more detailed information about your website, and any information regarding your previous host, such as VPS / Dedicated specifications. (so we know what type of server you would require)

Ah crap, sorry man. I should have found those first. It's a video site which hosts videos which are *technically* copyrighted. Sorry once again!

Yeah, that list isn't exactly easy to find. Although it is in the Terms of Service section of our knowledgebase, I should really link to it off of the main TOS.
Will do that later in the day.
Edit: used to have a link to it, but then I went and changed some things around. People were abusing the unlimited addon domain policy by selling hosting to their own clients, so I updated the terms, wrote a new KB article, and the likes.
Haven't really had the time to clean it all up since then. So, my apologizes if the site is a mess.
Figured I'd have another go at a FP hosting company and got a starter pack for my new site.
My Status
On July 19th, my entire town (and surrounding area) was hit by a major thunderstorm, which knocked out all communication services. (phone, internet, and my beloved TV)
The storm was truly quite severe. The lightning was so rapid and intense at times, it painted the entire sky in a brilliant shade of unending purple.
Now, two days after the storm, the internet and telephone have finally been restored. I'm back on active duty. :)
Server Restart
I meant to do this on July 19th, but given the storm, and my lack of internet, the restart was postponed.
Now that I have internet again, I should be able to restart the server later tonight, between the hours of 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM. (ET)
We aim to restart our servers once every 30 days, and hope to stick to a sort of schedule. (although lately, our schedule keeps getting delayed)
This allows us to maintain a fast and responsive hosting environment.
