Don't look on it as a mistake, but an opportunity to learn surface mount soldering ;)

I thought that, but I have no PCB to solder it to.
I guess now I have an opportunity to get a PCB.

Solder small wires to the pads, dead-bug style? Or do you only have breadboards so far.

I only have breadboards at the moment. Got some other 555's off eBay so it isn't too much of an issue
Yeah no worries, they're pretty cheap aren't they :) order time is the main thing.
At some point you might want to stock up on some simple perfboard, China is usually your friend for this.

5 for £1 :) I've been looking at some perf board actually, just haven't decided who to buy from yet.

Ebay. So so cheap from china. Long order time but just buy in bulk.

There is so much to choose from though.

You can't go wrong with something like this (crazily cheap, quality is fine if your iron isn't stupidly hot).
You might also want something a bit bigger.
If you're having trouble visualising the dimensions then just whip out a ruler and draw a rectangle on a bit of paper to figure out how big they are. In general you can fit at least 2-3 times as much stuff on perfboard as a breadboard of similar size without making it cramped.
Wow that price is crazy! Thank you so much.
It kind of sucks that there's no decent place to buy perfboard from in the UK as far as I have seen.
Ordering from China is cheap and nice and all until you start to lose focus because of the long waiting times. Luckily there are other projects to realize but ehh.

http://bitsbox.co.uk/ is pretty good if you only need a few.
Do you live in the UK though? My knowledge of flags isn't great, is that the Portuguese one?
And yeah that's why it's handy to build up a stock of these consumables, works out cheaper in the long run because you aren't constantly paying the price of convenience and fast delivery.
My only dislike with bitsbox is the postage. They're fast and the components are cheap, but if you just want a few things it isn't too nice. Say £1 part and then £1.75 postage. It would be nice if you could have a cheaper, but slower postage option.

Sunsphere components on ebay is pretty good, £1 postage per item and then 5p per extra item, 100 resistors for a pound, always gets there within 2 days for me. They've got quite a good range too.

Sorry I'm just spamming places to buy things :v: I do do some actual electronics sometimes, I promise

You can mouse-over a flag to see what country it's from.

Thing is, thats how much postage costs.
when buying from china, the companies over there pay near... nothing to post.

I've used bitsbox before for some components, they're one of the better sources, but yes I agree that building up a large stock and ordering in bulk is the way to go.
I live in the UK yeah, but I registered this account in Portugal (The flag shows registration location, not active location, for some reason).

Except I can send any envelope First Class for 60p, and jiffy bags don't cost much.

A first class 60p stamp only covers letters up to 100g in weight and cannot be thicker than 5mm.... Anythign above that is a large letter or small parcel which starts at about £1 and swiftly scales upwards.
Yey, a new toy!

Not a single IC to be found inside, it has a ovenized crystal as well.

Could be worse. Once I was looking for screen protectors for my phone + a case. Found one on Amazon with 2 options: Case + 5 screen guards, or case + 20 screen guards, and the one with 20 was somehow $3 cheaper.
"Hell yeah!" I say to myself as I click "order now" button.
Get email from Amazon with my receipt.
$7 for item. $55 SHIPPING.
"Hell naw!" I say to myself as I click "Cancel order" so rapidly I wore away my fingerprint on that particular index finger.
Seriously, they had to have planned on shipping that from the fucking moon to warrant that much shipping. And it was from the same seller! The shipping for the 5 guards version was only $2!
Just made an XOR gate using only NAND gates. I'm in CS but we get to do this every once in a while

Oh wow... those look interesting to play with

probibly gonna buy a few x3
You should take a look at the attiny44, thing's extremely cheap and has a load of functionality! (No external crystal though)
and I thought the ATtiny 85 was tiny :v:

I got a few 84's at my house (pretty much the same as a 44) and they are great. you got a lot of pins to work with so it's really neat.
Is it possible to be enough of a smartass to hook up completely identical & same type recieving-only SPI devices in parralel and it'll actually work?
Talking about the CS, MOSI and the clock pin (and the obvious vcc and GND pins)

You'd need to pull CS / SS low on the chip you want to interface with.
Alternatively you could try a daisy chain:

Or, instead of attiny44/84, get an MSP430G2553, which is: cheaper, has bigger flash, ram and unbeatable incredibly low power consumption.

Problem with the MSP's is that most of the available software is utter shit, there is also less support for them compared with the AVR or PIC, that said they are indeed a better overall choice although I would not really recommend them for beginners.
