Just want to chime in about Holland. We used to have free education, and you had to get your diploma in 10 years or you'd have to pay it back. Now it's a system where you can only loan. This is very disappointing because once I'm done here I'll have a 7800 euro debt. I also have to pay rent so my total debt when I graduate will be 40,000 euro.
Quite the difference from the old system, and definitely a step backwards. I'm seriously considering stopping and working instead of finishing and being in debt.
don't do it, you'll easily be able to pay it back, you have a long period of time to do so.
I'm still among the lucky ones that still get it for 'free' though.

7800 is still pennies compared to what I hear they have to pay in US.
The rent doesn't really count though.
Finally made it possible to edit world geo shapes:
Vertices can be set to be ignored by the physics mesh generation (blue verts) which makes it very easy to create ramps for stairways.

Oh also grid snapping and selection boxes are now implemented and working as intended.
So this is an editor, yet you still included the smoothing between perspective and orthographic projections. That's polish right there.

My degree is costing me around ~$26000 but it's all deferred to a no interest government loan that gets paid off slowly in tax after a certain threshold. (also has a 25% bonus for paying it up front IIRC) Government wanted to remove the cap on tuition fees to allegedly reduce the cost but it sounds like some top tier bullshit to me. Still nothing compared to the bullshit in America though. Up until now the classes were all good, this semester has been full of spelling mistakes and glaringly obvious errors in assignment specifications though unfortunately.
I'm not saying that Holland is suddenly worse or as bad as the US, but I think 7800 is still a lot of money. And there's a difference between starting your work life with a 0 euro debt or with a 7800 debt debt imho.
[editline]5th October 2015[/editline]
Or in my case a 40k debt
Education is free here in Finland. My CS degree costs me nothing, and I get about 4800€ in benefits every year. Additionally, I took a ~12K€ government-backed loan to help pay for rent & food. If I get my degree on time, the government pays about a third of it for me.
Oh, and we don't have pre-reqs like in the USA, at least not to the same extent. I have to study one course of English (which is integrated into a CS course) and one course of Swedish (grrr), but the rest is 100% CS and maths.
I can't vent my frustration about certain areas of development on <PLATFORM> because it might damage my company's reputation with <THING>.
All I can say is that everything is okay and you are never really finished with a game until someone puts down their foot and says that it is. Until then it will never be finished.
This is really awesome-looking. What is up with the 'clock' or 'wheel' at the bottom of the character?

I'm guessing the line represents rotation, just a simple way to represent a walk cycle or whatever.
Zesty is sort of right. It does represent rotation but the "wheel" is actually what is driving the player forwards. It's also helped along with some appliance of forces to improve acceleration.
Damn you guys are awesome, some stuff you make make me almost ashamed posting my stuff :v:
Also my progress, not much but still:

If it makes you feel any better, it took me 6 days just to figure out the proper math to light LEDs according to a joystick's position in Arduino, so I consider your current progress stupendous. :v:
Unity sure looks purty.

I had to remove the cube because it looks shitty without any realtime lights :v:
Also, any idea why the unity team decided it was a good idea to remove pretty much all the useful settings on soft shadows? Like seriously, you can't actually make them soft anymore. They're just hard shadows with a slight AA.
Edit:
Almost forgot, I posted pictures from the editor, the window has a slight particle effect (because it's particles it doesn't show up magically unless you play the scene):

Shadow filtering takes up time, perhaps their version of it was shit, performance wise.
Either that or maybe its behind a paywall somewhere or something idk.

There is no paywall in Unity anymore for game engine features, people need to stop perpetuating this.

looks like someone went a little overboard with their normal map
I wrote a solver for that sliding numbers puzzle thing https://gist.github.com/130260e97c3d60572280
I'm amazingly pleased with how well it works. It solves anything in the 4x4 category on this site http://mypuzzle.org/sliding in a second or two.
It uses a heuristic to narrow down the search and I can't say for sure how far it is from actually optimal solutions but it definitely seems close.
What I like about the solution is that it separates the generation of the solution space and it's traversal. First I generate an infinite tree of possible moves, simply relying on lazyness to not generate unvisited nodes, then I traverse it with some priority queue.
I'm still plugging away at cascaded shadow maps.
On the upside I know what is working, but I'm still not quite sure what isn't working.
The shadows are definitely rendering at different distances relative to the camera.

Sometimes when I write a long post I press Ctrl-S. If I use vim for a while I try to use <esc>:w in Notepad++ and it does nothing. Muscle memory is weird.

There would be the one idiot who accidentally tiles it and creates a terrifying navel monster.
It would be all bumpy and stuff, like firm bubble wrap.

For all of you in Uni/College, how math heavy is your Computer Science degree?
My Comp Sci degree plan puts me one senior level class away from getting my math minor. I'm just so tired of math though.
