Hey devs w/ VR kits, in your opinion is it worth it to preorder the Oculus Rift? I'm considering having Planimeter experiment w/ VR in a fun side project and awarding headsets to a couple team members, but I also don't want to make the expense if the headsets are going to cost more than $400-500 a piece.
[vid]http://i.imgur.com/jxHpu9i.webm[/vid] Change the gifv to webm, Imgur decided to make their own wrapper because the general populace of Imgur is braindead and anything that changes more than a letter at a time scares them.
Hey is that your wallpaper in the background? I made that! Never thought someone would still be using it.

I was at a dev show a while back and apparently it's leagues ahead of the Rift. If I had monies I'd hold out for it.

Just reading up on the HTC Vive, it seems more technologically advanced than the Rift. It should be a straightforward decision. But the Rift has more competitive product design and partnerships, in my opinion. Games shipping with it, and an Xbox One controller provided as well are good selling points on top of an already great product. The more silly bit, however, is that I liked Valve more as a video game developer. I don't care much for them as a digital distribution company or as a hardware platform company. They don't provide great value to me as a customer anymore, and it seems more like they're more invested in monopolizing on their position in the industry instead, and solidifying it with things like Steam as a platform and with hardware that integrates with it. Because of this, I don't really have an interest in supporting anything with their name on it now. I miss the games they created. They're a private business, so I vote with my dollar. I don't think that's something FP members respect, though. So, call me stupid or w/e.
Oh hey, I was at 32c3 aswell! Did you visit the 3d printing assembly by any chance?
you could get into socket programming and do it yourself
Socket programming is the bomb. It's one of the many fun things you can do :).
Socket programming is the bomb. It's one of the many fun things you can do :).
It's really easy, and you can get some fun prototypes going really fast. This is also why i like projects like Perls Mojolicious::Lite. Web framework done FAST. And ORLite. And things like jq for the shell, and C libraries like SDL. Lots of cool shit to do, but still lots of flexibility, and ease of use.
Reading some cool shit for Computer Organization and Architecture. Did you all like this class? I go to Community College and thus far my classes have been some pretty weak "intro to java" classes. Only last Semester (2nd year) did we start to touch on data structures (no algorithms, and no growth rate/Big O notation though). My professor this semester has us reading a lot of technical papers and stuff published by microsoft and some big name universities so I'm really excited. Right now I've got to read "KVM/ARM: The Design and Implementation of the Linux ARM Hypervisor", and my homework is: "[1pt] Read the article “KVM/ARM: The Design and Implementation of the Linux ARM Hypervisor” by Dall and Neih. List the 5 system components that have hardware support for virtualization in the ARMv7 and ARMv8 architectures. (Note: In the remainder of this course, we will explore the physical design of at least 3 of these 5 system components.)" Which is really cool. I feel like I'm really getting into my degree finally :) [editline]4th January 2016[/editline] Of course, my classes don't start for another week or two, so I'm gonna do the HW now but not submit it until I've actually been to class so I don't mess up the instructions somehow.

Being on FP this long, I'm just afraid of voicing actual unpopular opinions, unlike what's considered unpopular on the forums. This isn't an encouraging place.

Today I decided to start text rendering, and got a simple system in place. [t]http://i.imgur.com/DnqjEfn.png[/t] It works perfectly with the rendering setup I built previously. Now I can specialize this rendering method into a text rendering back-end, and make use of it with other components that need to display 2D text. I'm so excited, I got all of my goals finished over the winter break.
If this were the case, people would be rating disagree rather than dumb :v:
If you just wrote you prefer text editors ove VS, you'd get disagrees. Saying JS rocks is fine too, if a little misguided. You probably got dumbs because of the obvious provocation and the C# comment which you probably can't objectively defend. I bet there's a greater chance of an average C# project to work on multiple platforms than there's a chance that a C program written on Linux will work on Windows.

I think Microsoft develops C# to try to get people to stop using explicitly cross-platform languages. And I have the theory that Microsoft simply hates C developers and wants them to fuck off and die.

So, call me stupid or w/e.
The Vive being technologically more advanced than the Rift isn't really true, mostly because folks kept comparing it to the old Rift DK2. The Rift and Vive consumer versions will be pretty much equal in feature-set from the looks of it, and the specs are nearly equal too (expecting the Rift's screen to be a bit better cuz Samsung). Vive focusses more on room-scale and launches with it, Rift comes with a Xbox gamepad because devs have been developing for that for the last two years, and launches its hand-tracking Touch controllers in H2 2016. Main difference is that the Vive uses the Lighthouse tracking system which seems to scale more easily, while the Rift can use multiple cameras to do room-scale (but might not scale as well, though using cameras can open up possibilities in the future?) From a developer standpoint it's not that hard to support all HMDs. OpenVR supports most out of the box, though sometimes lacks some features like the dedicated Oculus SDK does. That'll probably improve in the future, but it's already stupidly easy to build a VR game in Unity or Unreal.
I mean Microsoft does not benefit from supporting C development.
I like C.
nobody does. C needs to die.
C is the underpinning in almost every OS. it's also like, the DE facto language of linux/unix. It's not very useful on windows because native windows compilers are literally decades behind and windows doesn't have any of the cool stuff for it that gnu has developed or POSIX.
Yeah just get rid of C and break 45 years of compatibility. Great idea. C is a perfectly good language. What about it do you dislike?
proboardslol what part of c# is dependent on windows...
