That's a fair point and well made. Sorry, my dude
Don't worry about it, I can deal with this as long as it's over the Internet (at least compared to when someone says it in person). Just please stop promoting the "disabled people are generally weak and/or helpless" image since it makes my life unnecessarily harder. Here's a good rule to go by I think: Exercise a little caution in both directions, differentiate which kind of venue you're in, and especially: If you're unsure just ask directly! (More or less. "Is it fine if I (jokingly) use ableist slur words?" seems a pretty safe way to pose this question even if I'd probably laugh about it :v: In the worst case you're going to offend someone a little, in the best case you'll end up with a conversation about disability experience.) If you go to a disability conference or mental health clinic, "ableist" jokes and slur words are most likely about as inappropriate as joking about violence to a school counsellor in the US, and if you're going there with someone who's prone to use them you really should remind them of this (even if they're disabled themselves). Also inform yourself of other rules set in place by the venue of course, and follow them by the letter. On the other hand, if a person is able to effectively use GitHub, it's highly likely they're also able to and will speak up for themselves if there's a problem. If things get sour then the support team has to handle it of course, but preemptively striking everything that might be offensive just serves to further stereotype mental health issues in this case. Then there are for example discotheques, which are (almost) completely inaccessible to me and that's fine. I probably could enter one for a little while after taking some precautions, but either way I'd never ask them to "turn down the volume" since that interferes with the core function of the place. (If I party with friends it's a different matter of course, making the music ~30% quieter isn't a big deal then.) It's a pretty specific example, but the same principle applies if someone wants to ask a comedian to "tone down their jokes". People go there in order to be offended, everyone's aware of it, and if someone has a serious problem with it they can avoid the event very easily. The genre is pretty diverse too, so if you're a fan of dark comedy but dislike e.g. disability jokes you could (here) visit German Kabarett (which usually makes fun of people in political power) or look up a comedian who has a routine you're comfortable with. Of course, if someone makes fun of a disabled person in public and you notice they're distressed by it, I'd be glad if you'd stand up for them. As long as it's a single issue consider doing it somewhat discretely though, since I think that's probably more comfortable for everyone involved in that situation.
there is something ludicrously cool about using the terminal to harvest astronomical data from JPL. Like, it feels so serious but it is also just awesome that the data is freely accessible. type ? or ?! for documentation, but essentially its the same body of data that NASA uses for mission planning and stuff. too. damn. neat. you can set any of the major bodies as your "observation point" using topographic coordinates for that body, and then extrapolate the data to fit your current observation. If for some reason you wanted to simulate the skys of mars or something idunno. If you type in "MB" it gives you the list of all the "major bodies" you can query, which includes most of NASA's spacecraft. I need to work on a use for this data but damn this is cool.
That is so insanely cool. I wouldn't know what to do with this information, but diggin around for a while, I realize that there's a LOT of really great information available for any kind of use.

Turns out HLSL can sometimes partially work, even when your code is completely wrong if you give it the right combination of undefined behavior.

Which is great, because previously I had just stolen data tables from someone who made a ton on github. But there's just sooo much data here The process is similar for nearly every NASA mission too, I've downloaded a ton of the RAW(!) data sent from Spitzer. Like, holy shit, I as a completely regular dude can just use data from space. Wut? Also, FITS is a format that leaves me conflicted. It's a love/hate relationship.

Still workin on player input. I checked out the stats on my repo, and I found that somehow I'm much more productive and have more commits during the periods that I'm actually attending university. Something about needing to do something much more important leads to me working on my own projects more frequently than when I have time off :v:
If you ever think of adding Vungle for advertising in your games, well don't. We got burned twice: 1. First time we wanted to be both advertisers and the one who show ads (we couldn't because their shitty website didn't support it) they politely told us we need to invest 10k$ before they talk about our problems. We got 100$ already pain in as advertising budget: we never got this money back. 2. Second time (one year later): we implemented Vungle to show ads into our game and our game started to lag and crash and money we earned we never got money paid out (500$). Vungle works only for big companies, if you are small don't even bother because their customer support is fucking awful.

I'm totally fine with little adverts placed at the bottom or somewhere else, but video-ads are so fkin dumb that I'm getting mad only thinking about it. But maybe that's just me :nope:
it wasn't forced, it was watch an ad to get in-game currency.
it wasn't forced, it was watch an ad to get in-game currency.
Seems very fishy that this is in-line with the ToS. A person choosing to watch an ad to get a reward for it probably has zero chance of buying the advertised product.
babby's first npc all they do right now is walk around and occasionally moonwalk (unintended) they still need some tweaking but i think i did okay.
Seems very fishy that this is in-line with the ToS. A person choosing to watch an ad to get a reward for it probably has zero chance of buying the advertised product.
isn't that the case for literally all ads
Seems very fishy that this is in-line with the ToS. A person choosing to watch an ad to get a reward for it probably has zero chance of buying the advertised product.
It's not a problem
Been working on some lighting stuff recently (notably sky/sun lighting, sun shafts, better rim lighting, better light depth culling): I also moved my depth buffer to a separate pass and increased the precision from 8 to 32-bits, resulting in much higher quality lighting (most notably SSAO): This also enabled me to easily add support for translucent rendering: Next up I'm moving some basic light culling/2D shadows from my test env to the actual lighting system:
That's seriously the best looking 2D/3D platformer I've ever seen, it's gorgeous.

Has anyone here made a crossplatform (desktop/smartphone) game in C++?
Wahey got shadows working:
I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to game dev - If I wanted a fairly high level (I don't really want to have to build up a load of shit using OpenGL / D3D) 3D graphics library for C# (not overly concerned with multi platform, windows is key) what are my options?
You'll learn to hate Ubuntu; you'd probably prefer Debian/Arch/Mint for programming.
What do you dislike about ubuntu? I've never had a problem with it and apt itself is enough reason to use ubuntu
